Nah I don't, the max fuel burning time of Akash SAM is low, that's why it's range is low

Army satisfied with Akash missile

The Army is fully satisfied with the performance of the indigenously developed Akash short-range surface-to-air missile (SR SAM) system and is looking for further performance enhancements in future, Lt. Gen. Parminder Singh S Jaggi, Director-General, Army Air Defence (AAD), said here on Tuesday.

Last month, the Army carried out the first user trial of the missile system.

Biggest advantage

“We are happy with the Akash system. It is a watershed as far as indigenous systems are concerned. The biggest advantage is it is a home grown system,” Lt. Gen. Jaggi said.

The Army’s AAD celebrated its 25th year of raising on Tuesday.

The Army currently has two Akash regiments which it began inducting in 2015. Last year, the Defence Ministry cancelled a global tender for additional SR SAMs and approved procurement of two more regiments. Each regiment consists of six launchers with each launcher having three missiles. Officials say Akash has an indigenous content of 96%.

“The first user trial by AAD crew was fully successful. Akash has been validated as it has been conceptualised,” Lt. Gen. Jaggi said.


25-km range

Akash has a range of 25 km and can simultaneously engage multiple targets in all weather conditions and has a large operational envelope from a low altitude of 30 metres to a maximum of up to 20 km.

The Army is likely to order more Akash regiments as it is in the process of replacing its legacy systems in service.

Lt. Gen. Jaggi said as more regiments were ordered, there would be additional enhancements in the system as well in performance.

He noted that as AAD celebrated its silver jubilee, there had beeb a major modernisation drive under way with the induction of a medium-range surface-to-air missile for which contracts had been signed and other deals in progress.

Akash was developed by the Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) as part of the Integrated Guided Missile Development Programme initiated in 1984 and is manufactured by Bharat Dynamics Ltd. (BDL).

China does have a copy. But it is fired from airplane, with a initial speed and height.It is used to hit radar or ships(slow or fixed target). gravity will accelerate the missile instead of slowing it down.
While SAM needs to climb to hit target with high speed and maneuverability
One can easily understand the difference.

Akash does not used liquid fuel.
Your posts have so many mistakes it would take far too much time to even bother to reply.
Akash has been tested against a wide variety of targets, maneuvering and otherwise & come out trumps. Unlike China, the Indian Armed Forces are not captive customers and have a wide range of imports to judge Akash against and set trial requirements. The ramjet works excellently for the given flight envelope, its only key issue is size & complexity, because of which the designers are looking towards more compact options which are not as optimal as the ramjet in chasing down targets but can deliver lighter platforms.

Obviously any designer would choose a booster and sustainer combination to deliver optimal speed for ramjet functioning. Are you on this forum to spread misinformation and create FUD? Very clear agenda it seems like.
You have no idea of how the Akash functions and its trial criteria. Rest assured when push comes to shove, your PLAAF will discover how effective Akash is against "highly maneuverable" targets.


that is wrong and misleading. Akash is probably the last SAM using ramjet. Even Soviet union/Russia SAM did not use ramjet after SAM-6.there is a reason for thatView attachment 22398
here is a simple illustration of ramjet。

Air was sucked in and compressed,mixing with gas(of solid rocket fuel),shooting out of nozzle.
that is how thrust come from. at low speed,there is not enough air sucked in, not compressed enough, thus not enough thrust. So a obvious weakness of ramjet sam is acceleration. At first it needs to overcome drag and gravity with insufficient thrust.

Also it is not that effective against an object with high maneuverability: high maneuver cost speed.speed down,thrust down.
So basically opposite to everything you said.

This is excellent news and more confirmation of the Akash 1S program to deliver 2 more regiments. Lt Gen Jaggi probably doesn't know the news is already out in the media. Anyhow, it will be even better if the first 2 Akash regiments can also be converted to Akash 1S without significant modifications.
This GOI has done wonders for local defense preparedness.

Great pictures. Thanks. One thing is DRDO systems are considerably more sophisticated than the imports across several criteria including command and control and completely digital launch platform controls. Third party observers were taken aback by the amount of effort built into these items, and clearly, DRDO now has the building blocks to continue to build on the basic PESA Radar + CLOS missile & keep advancing it as they are doing it with Mk1S and can go to Akash NG and beyond.

Akash design was optimized to provide maximum NEZ - i.e. its launch range is literally its actual proper high capability envelope, unlike other countries who often put up misleading ballistic ranges or RMax on their brochures and then claim that as maximum range.

Also the Akash's ramjet does provide an advantage of not just speed, sustained but range! thats important. My guess is that it provides a significant increase of range compared to none air breathing missiles of similar weight.

Both akash will be command guided. One will have additional seeker for better accuracy. Command guidance will always involve some time lag. Seekers will be more accurate
You are making an assumption that the seeker equipped Akash does not have independent LOBL modes.

Seeker is for final phase whereby the missile is about to hit the target. In such phases, the radar guidance will be a few milliseconds slower than seeker guidance. The Akash missiles have both guidance but prefers seekers at the homing in part

There are reasons why all other countries' air defense missiles have move away from ramjet engine-the air intake will disturb the air flow around the missile when it tries to perform high G maneuver. Unless Indian scientists discover something to break this physics principle, the weakness of this kind of engine is still there.
