We’re looking at 12 squadrons of the Light Combat Aircraft Mk.2, Indian Air Force chief Air Chief Marshal Birender Singh Dhanoa said today at an air power conference in India’s capital, confirming months of reports suggesting the IAF was looking for over 200 of the fighters.

2019
IAF has told the government that it is “committed to buying” another 10 Squadrons of Tejas Mark-II (each squadron has 16-18 fighters) and 36 Advance Medium Combat (AMCA) fighters.

2021
The projected induction of 7 squadrons of Tejas Mk2 as mentioned by the IAF chief is a welcome step.

50% of the projected requirement evaporated in 3 years

When a journo like Sandeep Unnithan had said that Mk2 is not on the cards and that the project is being opposed by officers within the IAF, it seems trustworthy. In the episode of 'Rakhwale' that was posted here, he clearly said that AF didn't want Mk2 and wanted to back AMCA in full. If this is true, it really shows that either their strategic planning is extremely poor or there is a LOT of corruption. They will do just about anything to keep a foreign fighter the mainstay of IAF.

One time might be an accident, two times might be a coincidence but three times!!? AF is clearly avoiding Mk2 talk.

Someone mail Anantha Krishnan sir and ask him Specifically about Mk-2.Ask him to bring this topic during his talk with Kota sir.
He don't reply

450 AMCAs :pound:Where did you get this number? Lol, they are repeatedly saying there will be only 40 Mk-1 & 80 Mk-2s total 120.
R8 r8 i was wrong.. Still won't be surprised.

123 LCA, 110-odd MWF, 120 AMCA, 114 MRFA post 2040 won't make 40 squadrons. Wtf can be their wish.

Whats all the fuss about not wanting mk2?....DDR's saurav jha said that the new acm had mentioned it and it is very much needed to get to even 35 sqd by 2030's.
Even if AF does tamasha they will have to swallow it in large numbers sooner or later.
And if we take dr kota's word then mk2 will be replacing jag's,29's and mirages so its an essential part of our future force.

Nobody is saying that IAF won't induct a single Tejas Mk2, the main problem is why the requirement for 12+ Tejas Mk2 squadron become 7 squadron only. China has 500+ J10s, how are we going to counter that without a substantial amount of Tejas Mk2 (Don't say AMCA). Mr. Harshvardhan Thakur's twitter account is still locked after his Tejas Mk2 tweet

Point MK2 Is not substitute of Rafale or Mirage-2000 categories aircraft

It lacks almost 3 ton Shortfall
In payload category
Neither it has Proven to launch Statergic Missiles like Scalp

IAF proposed 126 Requirment in 2003 itself

Deal stretched by MOD for 13-14 years

LCA mk2 is a third Tier fighter in

IAF

Primary Aircraft of IAF is still
Russian made MkI for next decade now rafale

I suggest you relook at the specs of Mirage 2000 and Tejas Mk2. There is no 3 ton shortfall. They are equals. With Rafale, both have a 3 ton shortfall in payload capacity, among other things (like smaller radar).

If the requirement is 126 Rafale class + replacements for MiG-29, Jaguar and Mirage 2000 (which is a total of around 200 jets), then both 114 MRCA and 180 Tejas Mk2 deals will have to fulfill these. Tejas Mk1, Mk1A are replacing the MiG-21.

I don't know why I've been depressed over this. Its plain and simple: both MRCA and Tejas Mk2 will need to go forward.

No aircraft is an exact substitute for the other. Question is whether or not it fits your profile? Decent A2A performance like Gripen, decent payload, indigenous technology and capability to integrate our own weapons. Makes a pretty strong case

It cannot fire Scalp because we don't have our own scalp. If strategic missiles were a point of consideration, then they could have ordered more Flankers- you can fire a load of missiles. For limited role that these weapons have, we already have 36 Rafale and a few more might be ordered. 114 of them when you cannot afford, and even if you could it makes no sense killing an entire project for the sake of slightly better payload and a few weapons. Hope they buy 2-3 squadrons of Rafale and be done with it.

IAF should have done a better planning considering the budget and the cost of these jets. They can propose whatever they want, what they'll get stays within a range easily calculated by Capex+Opex projections.

Higher Capex, higher Opex with 114 imported jets, not to mention the much needed midlife upgrades without which they become dud very fast given the rate of technological development coming in. We could not even afford to go with the Ruski programme of Super Sukhoi upgrades. What will happen to these 114 queens?

What is a third tier fighter? Who classifies tiers?
Apparently the not so first tier fighter tasted combat when it mattered.
Primary Aircraft of IAF is still
Russian made MkI for next decade now rafale
What other option do we have? Ignore Mk1 and keep dropping Bisons from the sky for two decades.

Next, ignore Mk2 and sit with an inventory of super expensive outdated jets 10 years from now. Yes, the "sexy" Rafales will also get outdated soon.

Mk2 weapons are under development and testing .

If you look at its weapons package .
1. Air to air

Python 5
Astra Variants
Asraam
Mica (possibly )

2.air to ground

Saaw
Hlsd
Guided hlsd
Garuthma and it's sister
Dumb bombs
Spice 2000 kit based bombs
Any future bomb category
Rampage missile possibly
Rudram 1,2,3
Brahmos ng
Alcm
Nasm sr
SANT (possibly )
Cats hunter
Any other munition that may come

I think this armament is good enough for now ,and if possible RUDRAM 3 ,can become our air launched nuke too .

Sensors with aesa , maws ,irst , rwr ng is good enough for anything in Market .

So what's the issue of someone called it not upto the mark for replacement of mirage ,mig 29 and jaguar (ffs )

114 MRCA and 180 Tejas Mk2
Assuming Rafale = Mk2 x 1.5 cost-wise

Why not 114*1.5+180=351 Mk2 and forget MRFA? For the same money you can put the same payload in the air. If wishes were horses..

It is a question of egg first or chicken. If IAF backs Tejas to the hilt world arms producers will line up outside their offices to have their top of the line missiles integrated with Tejas.

Uttam is already integrated with Mk1A - we can see where this is headed.

IAF has pilot shortage. Plus we do need more Rafale as stopgap for taking on J-20 until the AMCA comes in. The Chinese will be churning out J-20 like sausages in a few years. We are bound to see them permanently deployed in Xinjiang and Chengdu. So I'd say they should order 180-200 Mk2 and 72-114 more Rafale. Mk2 can go toe to toe against J-10, our flankers against theirs and then Rafale vs J-20. I know its not going to be a perfect one on one scenario, but force structures should look largely similar, for us to maintain parity.

The problem is when a need arises for IAF to penetrate deep into Chinese airspace or for a SEAD mission swarmed with S400, S300 and it's chinese clones, simultaneosly dealing with large number of J-16s and J-20, what will be a suitable platform for us to do this mission.? Tejas Mk1a or Rafale? According to me, even Su-30 mki will be a 2nd choice with Rafale assigned to the above task. Small size than Su-30, Lesser RCS, More payload to Weight ratio, active incoming radar signal cancellation using Spectra, Integrated Jammer all freeing pylons to carry maximum ordinance are all in favor of Rafale. Su30 must have to carry all EW as pods under its wings further increasing already large RCS. Su-30 didnt even had fleetwide SDRadio until Balakot. Dont know the present status.
The fact is that we dont have a significant number of 'Tip of the spear' fighters for China. All our equipments and doctrines atleast until Doklam, was focussed on Pakistan. We cannot hope to sent some 100 LCA to Tibet hoping that 50 succeeds and come back. We dont treat our pilots as cannon fodder.

Yes. Large number of Tejas can keep PAF occupied, freeing our Sukhois and Rafales for China front. But the problem is that IAF's capex is limited. They don't have the option to go for large indigineous aircraft and good number of Tip of the spear fighters within this limited budget. So they split up like 83mk1a + 36 Rafales. Another 36 Rafale + 7 squadrons of MWF etc...

We need to improve our GDP rapidly. That is the only solution. No country cannot equip a 45 squadron Air Force in this decade simultaneously maintaining a 10 lakh army + a booming and aspiring blue water navy with Nuclear and Conventional Submarine requirements + AirCraft and Amphibious Transport ships etc.. with a mere $3 trillion GDP with a significant number of population still below poverty lines and a requirement for massive investements in Infrastructure. Show me atleast 1 another country that does this. This is the same reason why us in Defence forums dream of a mega military build up are not satisfied with how GoI and Forces go with military acquisitions.
