We are yet to sign the contract for Derby. IAF does not have any while IN has 20.

Bangalore: India's first Shore-Based Test Facility (SBTF) is nearing completion. Built at the Naval Air Station, INS Hansa in Goa, the facility would replicate as a static model of the Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC) being built at the Cochin Shipyard. The SBTF would have a 14 deg parabolic profile ski-jump for take-off and an arresting gear for landing.Sources told Express that all stage design documents of the facility have been received from the Russian side. "The take-off area is nearing completion and the progress of arrester gear structure manufacturing and site work is on schedule. The factory acceptance test (FAT) of all five Russian specialized equipment has been completed at original equipment manufacturer (OEM) premises," sources said.The Russians (JSC Rosoboronexport) are executing the design consultancy and supply of specialized equipment work as per a 2009-pact, valued at $60 m. The approximate budget provision for Indian participants is about Rs 175 crore.The equipment from Russian are expected this year, with the take-off area scheduled to be completed by June this year and landing area by the end of 2012.The primary objective of SBTF is for certification of LCA Navy aircraft for ship-borne operations. This is the mandatory requirement prior to aircraft operations are taken up from the IAC (INS Vikrant) for carrier compatibility test (CCT). "The facility will ensure timely induction of Naval LCA (NLCA) into naval service and conserve ship-based test flying effort. Apart from the flight testing of NLCA, the SBTF can be subsequently used for training of naval pilots on NLCA and MiG 29K. The SBTF will be the one-of-its-kind facility in the South Asian region. The US and Ukraine have a similar facility.The SBTF will be a equipped with restraining gear system with ski-jump for take-off, arresting gear system for landing, optical landing system, TV landing control system, light signaling system and other associated auxiliary units, exactly similar to the IAC.Spearheaded by the NLCA programme office in Bangalore, the complete structural work and system integration of SBTF is being carried out by Goa Shipyard Ltd. The Civil Engineering activity is being undertaken by CCER&D (West), Pune in collaboration with R&DE (Engineers), Pune. A telemetry ground station with the state-of-the-art technology is being setup for flight operations by the National Flight Test Centre (NFTC), Bangalore.While the SBTF work is probably ahead of the schedule, sources say that the eagerly-awaited first flight of NLCA (Naval Prototype NP-1) is on course. The platform is said to have undergone a trial for nose-wheel checks (70 km) on Valentine's Day, while a LSTT (low-speed taxi trial) at a possible max speed of 140 km/hour is scheduled for February 18. This would be followed by a HSTT (high-speed taxi trial) at a maximum speed of 200-200 km/hour and then the subsequent first flight.

The first batch of the country's indigenously developed light combat aircraft (LCA) "Tejas" was likely to be handed over to the Indian Air Force by next year, a senior Aeronautical Development Agency official said today.

"As far as LCA is concerned, Hindustan Aeronautics Limited (HAL) is the prime agency. Last year they have started production. I hope from next year onwards they (the LCAs) will start entering the service..", Kota Harinarayana, Dr D S Kothari DRDO Chair, ADA, Bangalore, told reporters here.

In the first batch, IAF had placed orders for 40 LCAs. "Airforce has committed about 80 aircraft. Navy also wants similar aircraft", he said.

Harinarayana, former Programme Director for the LCA project at ADA, also mooted integration of auto component companies with HAL.

"See, HAL should not manufacture from bottom to top..that is from pin to aircraft. Pins should be made by pin-specialist. HAL can concentrate on integration. The problem is, there are no Tier I and II companies (to support other products for the construction of an aircraft)..we have to bring in that technology and innovation.", he said.

"The real challenge is we have to bring in technology at low costs which are globally competitive. We should be able to sell it elsewhere in the world", he said.

Earlier, addressing a seminar at the third edition of Tamil Nadu Manufacturing Summit, organised by CII, he said the global aerospace market was estimated to be USD 100 billion and dominated by US and European Union based industries.

In the next 20 years, India would need more than 1,200 aircraft worth USD 100 billion, he said.

He was of the view that Indian companies can enter into an agreement with Tier-I companies of the world so that there could not be any difficulty in bringing such technology to India.

I doubt its under-powered, In Aero-India it has been seen LCA preforming complex maneuvers..

Though Its IAF demand to have 90kt engine which will be there..

A dry thrust of 52kN is good enough, if we concentrate so much on thrust then PAF and PLAF could have never inducted the JF-17 or J-10 which have similar T/W ratios because it falls short of IAFs requirement. Most militaries induct and then rectify, even the Typhoon Trench-1 or Raff where very poor in integration at first. We need to focus on Avionics, Radar and weapons suit integration. In todays age we need an aircraft that prevents any visual range conflict and finishes the job at BVR, if at all they do come in visual range then we have air superiority fighters like Su-30MKI.

Right now our Air Force is extremely weak, we only have the 120 odd Su-30MKIs that are of some standard, rest of it are vintage crap that will fall out of the sky if there was any war.

Why do you call it underpowered?

The LCA as it is has almost identical T/W ratio as the Mirages. The LCA Mk-II will have better T/W ratio than the upgraded Mirages, which BTW does not have any engine upgrade plans.

Bangalore: The first flight of the limited series production (LSP-7) version of India's Light Combat Aircraft (LCA) Tejas is in a striking distance. Sources confirm to Express that the LSP-7 performed the crucial High-Speed Taxi Trial (HSTT) on Thursday in a nose-wheel-lift mode at about 260 kmph. A data analysis de-brief is scheduled on Friday (March 9) to check various parameters of the aircraft during the HSTT, which was the second one for LSP-7.
On Thursday, Grp Capt Venugopal of the National Flight Test Centre (NFTC) did the HSTT, which is a pointer that he might be the chosen one to take LSP-7 for the first flight. "It is a positive step to see more platforms joining the flight-line. We need more of them so that we can divide our tasks and put the programme on a faster pace," a source with the Aircraft System Testing Establishment of the Indian Air Force (IAF) said.
With LSP-7, the 12th aircraft from the project flight-line would join the Tejas party with another (LSP-8) scheduled to be rolled out in future. Express had reported earlier about a fuel leak on LSP-7, which forced the Aeronautical Development Agency(ADA)-HAL combo to ground the entire fleet. This had pushed the programme further behind the schedule by four-five months -- the time taken by designers and engineers in re-arranging the butting of fuel and hydraulic pipes to prevent them from coming in contact.
