India to go ahead with $3.1 bn US deal for maritime patrol aircraft

The procurement of 10 Boeing P8I maritime patrol aircraft is likely to be cleared at a key acquisition meeting next week.

NEW DELHI: India is set to go ahead with a $3.1-billion deal with the US to acquire maritime aircraft for the Navy that will add to its surveillance capabilities in the Indian Ocean Region. The procurement of 10 Boeing P8I maritime patrol aircraft is likely to be cleared at a key acquisition meeting next week, with the contract to be processed under the foreign military sales (FMS) route.

The deal, which will include a mandatory clause for at least 30% offsets to domestic companies, will add to the 12 P8I aircraft that have already been ordered by India and will help maintain strong vigil over a region that has seen increasing deployments by the Chinese Navy.

The maritime patrol aircraft, which specialises in tracking and hunting down enemy submarines with lightweight torpedoes and depth charges, are also operated by the US and Australian navies, which operate in coordination with India to keep track of ship movements.

Sources said that the Navy is keen to build up a fleet of 22 of these aircraft at the earliest and the contract will ensure a continuous supply over the next four years as older maritime reconnaissance assets (Russian origin) retire. The first batch of eight aircraft were ordered under a $2.1-billion deal in 2009 and a follow on order for four was placed in 2016.

The P8I aircraft have been a pride of place for the Indian Navy that is depending on the fleet for a variety of operations — from submarine tracking to search and rescue and even reconnaissance over land.

On top of that . Chinese subs in IOC will be watched by India USA and Australia . And all will share information regarding subs.

That is another benefit of commonality of p8 platform .
But the Chinese also have an equivalent to our alliance. They can ask Pakis to use their super advanced surveillance equipment to track our navy, along with future djinn weapons. Take that, US, India, Aus.

Our previous navy chief said that Chinese sub has never entered Indian Ocean in 2 years...

#DAC to consider procurement of 10 P8i long-range aircraft for Indian Navy

.

On the eve of the visit by Admiral John Aquilino, the US Pacific Command chief, the Defence Acquisition Council (DAC) headed by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and including the three armed forces chiefs, will look at, once again, at a three billion dollar mega-deal — the purchase of 10 P8i maritime reconnaissance aircraft for the Indian Navy.

This is the second time the issue comes up in a DAC meeting even though this is a repeat order — the Indian Navy has purchased the plane earlier — as it comes in the wake of the COMCASA or Communications Compatibility and Security Agreement. "As a result, the equipment on the plane and the cost will change," high-level government sources said.

The P8i is a long-range (more than 1,200 nautical miles) aircraft for surveillance and also, anti-submarine operations. The USA has been pushing this deal which comes up before the DAC towards the end of this month. Admiral Aquilino arrives for meetings with the Navy chief Admiral Karambir Singh, and other officials, on October 27 for a three-day visit.

Discussions are likely to be about closer defence cooperation and the situation in the South China Sea. The USA is concerned about the growing power of China and its recent differences with ASEAN countries, some of whom are close to the USA. There is also some talk of Admiral Aquilino going to the Andamans, where the armed forces have a unified command, but that is yet to be decided. There could be discussions on the region, including help to smaller countries.

They are cutting the Additional Planes from 10 to Just 6 now. We should have strong maritime Reconnaissance and Patrol Fleet with increasing threat from the Commie Chinese Subs but Indian MoD Shitting all over it by cutting down the Aircraft made for the Navy.
