Well i believe the requirement is for trucks to serve as TEL vehicles, in such a case the only domestic vehicle we already have certified for the stresses a heavy missile can exert during launch is the TATA 12X12 which has been certified as the launch platform
i believe we should go with MAZ or MZKT/VOLAT for now as these are by far the most capable deployed heavy missile launch trucks available the world over today. simultaneously we should try to absorb some of the tech to build our own MAZ analogue like china has done with the Wanshan TEL wich is again based on a MAZ design.
I have a question here.Am not knowledgable in this subject. But what is preventing us from developing these heavy truck requiremnts. After all TATA appears to be all most there. the govt can form a partnership to fund half or more of the research and the actual product development and refinement can be done by the TATA.the general trend is that the Tata or any private comp should get this done faster than the psu.isnt this hiw a lot of american defense product developments are happening ?

If the government assures private players that they will buy trucks from them, there is no reason why these manufacturers will not buy, beg borrow, steal and develop technology capable of building the most powerful TELS's . however there is no assurance for any domestic defense purchase by the MOD hence the hesitation in investment.

Russian engines aren't very powerful are they?
Mating a different engine shouldn't be a problem. Even the UAZ jeeps these days come with Toyota engines. You get the robust Russian body and a reliable and fuel efficient Japanese engine - the best of both worlds.

Guys does anyone have any ideas as to why Mumbai airport operates 2 different types of Crash tenders? It is pretty odd, no?

Both taken in 2010:

Rosenbaur Panther

Oshkosh Strikerâ„¢ 3000

http://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rc...nJ7n0F_tQIAoelGIw&sig2=skQplG4OHPjpYM9EJ7uMLQ

And you can't say one is replceing the other-the Strikers only arrived in 2010 and the Panthers the year or two before (so both spanking new).
Prolly two tenders a few months apart with the second one going in favor of oshkosh which may indicate that someone passed the rosenbaur offer from the previous tender onto oshkosh, thereby letting them how much to quote:p

NEW DELHI: Tata Motors has offered its latest vehicles to the Defence Ministry to replace the controversial Tatra trucks, used so far to carry missiles such as Agni and Prithvi.

The procurement of Tatra trucks has been put on hold pending a CBI probe into bribery allegations by former Army chief Gen V K Singh.

Tata Motors will make a presentation before Defence Ministry's Director General (Acquisition) S B Agnihotri about its latest vehicles offered by it to replace Tatra trucks for carrying missile systems of the armed forces such as BrahMos and Pinaka, Defence Ministry sources told PTI here.

The Ministry has already been offered trucks by Russian and Belarusian firms for replacing the Tatras including the Volat trucks from Belarus which are used to carry strategic missile systems of the Russian armed forces.

Due to the virtual ban on the procurement of Tatras, several key projects of the Army and the IAF have been put on hold including procurement of land-based version of BrahMos supersonic cruise missile for the Army and the IAF and the Pinaka rockets launchers for the land forces.

If the proposals made by these firms are accepted, they would be put under trials for being integrated with the missile systems, they said.

Already, a significant number of Tata trucks are in service with the armed forces but they are in light and medium vehicle category.

More than 7,000 Tatra trucks are in service with the armed forces and after the controversy in March last year, their repair and maintenance have also become an issue in the defence forces.

Last March, Gen V K Singh had levelled allegations that he was offered a bribe of Rs 14 crore by a retired Lt Gen to clear a file relating to the procurement of over 600 of these trucks.

I am not a big time fan for TATA products but I welcome a desi company taking the responsibility of land transportation for strategic assets, more over BEML Tatra had some limitations in maximum axle and load weight capacity, say Brahmos missile system could be 4 missile canister instead of 3 in a single vehicle, desi companies might offer flexibility in number of axle and maximum weight capacity plus variation of length and breth of the vehicle, single vehicle transportation for Agni missile system instead of the current Tractor-trailer/ road-rail arrangements, currently Mahindra is new in HMV segment but they seems to have better grip of market trends, Ashok-Leyland got some better rep in HMV segment.
