No S-300 for Syria this year, Israel's defense minister assesses

Defense Minister Moshe Ya'alon on Monday said that if Russia ultimately decides to transfer its state-of-the-art S-300 anti-aircraft missile system to Syria, "it will happen only in 2014."

Speaking during a meeting of the influential Knesset Foreign Affairs and Defense Committee, Ya'alon said that "we are closely following the possibility that Russia may send the missiles to Syria."

While he repeated the oft-reiterated Israeli policy that "we are not involving ourselves in the Syrian civil war," Ya'alon emphasized that Jerusalem would nevertheless protect its own interests, and ensure that "advanced arms, missiles and chemical weapons" do not reach the Lebanese Shiite militia Hezbollah.

Ya'alon also said that President Bashar Assad only controls some 40 percent of Syria's territory, and even in the capital of Damascus, rebels now hold at least four neighborhoods.

The sale of Russian S-300 missiles to the embattled regime of Syrian President Bashar Assad has been a hot topic in recent weeks. Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in May in an attempt to dissuade him from going ahead with the deal, reportedly indicating that Israel would destroy Syrian S-300 missiles before they became fully operational.

Israeli sources said last week that Syria has only paid for one-third of the S-300 contract. "It is not clear to me that the Russians are interested in transferring the weapons. Right now, it's more of a threat," said Ehud Ya'ari, Channel 2"²s veteran, well-connected commentator.

In remarks erroneously attributed to Assad on Thursday, the Syrian president was said to have boasted in a TV interview that his country had received a first S-300 shipment from Russia, and to have asserted that "the rest of the load will arrive soon." Israeli officials immediately said he was lying and bluffing.

If the Israelis think that a export variant of the S-300 is state-of-the-art, then S-500 is a rejected design of God and the Indian BMD is used by God to defend himself from all the nonsense we say about Him.

And they thrive in Lebanon because of Syrian support. The only good reason for Assad to fall is that it would be good for Lebanon, in my opinion.
and hamas support the rebels/terrorists.

id rather have hezbollah active than hamas.

North Korean officers join Assad's forces

Opposition claims Pyongyang is sending officers to aid Assad in Aleppo. Reports indicate continued upscale in Hezbollah participation in Syrian war, including terror group's fighters manning Syrian tanks in battle for Qusair

A Syrian opposition human rights organization claimed Monday that officers from the North Korean army are aiding Bashar Assad's forces in their fight against the rebels in Aleppo. According to the organization, a few of Assad's civilian militia fighters revealed the presence of the North Korean officers in the war zones.

The Syrian regime has been claiming for a long time that among the rebels fighting it across the country there are many fighters from oversees, sent by "Syria's enemies" such as Saudi Arabia, Israel or the US. Assad no longer denies his army is aided by thousands of Lebanese Hezbollah fighters, who are assisting the Syrian army to ward off the rebels

However, reports regarding North Korean officers in the field are relatively rare. In an interview to Asharq Al-Awsat, director of a Syrian human rights center, Rami Abed A-Rachman, said that the number of North Korean officers in Syria is unknown, although there are definitely between 11 and 15 Arabic speaking North Korean officers in Aleppo.

Meanwhile there has been an escalation in the participation of Hezbollah in the civil war in Syria, as troops affiliated with the Shiite militant group now operate tanks of Bashar Assad's regime army in their battles against insurgent near the rebel-held town of Qusair in western Syria. Arab sources told Ynet this represents a precedent for Hezbollah as it continues to boost its support of the embattled Syrian ruler.

Rebel sources said thousands of Hezbollah fighters gathered outside Aleppo Sunday, which was confirmed by Hezbollah.

"Battle over Aleppo started on a small scale, and we are only now entering the game," a senior Hezbollah told The Washington Post speaking from Beirut. "We will go to their strongholds, where they think they are protected. They are going to collapse like a house of cards."

The tanks manned by Hezbollah men have not yet crossed the border to Lebanon. The fighting is monitored by the IDF, which regards the vicinities of Qusair as a major route of weapon transfer between Syria and Lebanon.

US to send Patriot missiles, F-16s to Jordan for drill: The United States will send a Patriot missile battery and F-16 fighters to Jordan for a military drill and may keep the weapons there to counter the threat posed by Syria's civil war, officials said.

The Patriot missile launchers and F-16 warplanes "were approved for deployment to Jordan as part of Exercise Eager Lion," the spokesman for US Central Command, Lieutenant Colonel TG Taylor, said.

"In order to enhance the defensive posture and capacity of Jordan, some of these assets may remain beyond the exercise at the request of the Government of Jordan," Taylor said in a statement.
Considering its an eager lion operation, would it be wrong to assume that drill may actually take place in syria??

That means they transfered to the Jordanians or another US base in Jordan

North Koreans? What's wrong with Assad? Is he allying himself with them for Nukes?

And allowing Hezbollah to man his tanks? - That's a bad idea.

Tanks are very complicated, rugged and yet delicate machines. You give them to barbaric backward brainwashed militants, who knows what will happen to those old T-55s?

This quick? That's bad. If Assad falls, "Syrian" missile crisis, only this time with Scuds.

Another Iraq anyone?

Actually, I'd prefer if USA invades now to wipe out the REBELS, instead of the government. But tank to tank fights will be poor. M1 will slaughter rebel T-55 and T-72 with no mercy.

You've put it very well. The roof armour of the best T-55/T-72 is merely 70-80 mm of steel. The A-10 Thunderbolt's DU 30 mm APFSDS can penetrate 100+ mm without problems. Even GsH-30-1 on Russian fighter jets will kill a T-55 from the top, no problemo!

Not to forget the B-52 Stratofortress. Those golden oldies like our very own @W.G.Ewald sir just need to open the bomb bay. End of rebels. 10 tonnes of high explosive incendiary bombs don't heal you, duh!

S-300 missiles not yet sent to Syria, Putin says

MOSCOW (AP) — President Vladimir Putin said Tuesday that Russia hasn't yet fulfilled a contract to send sophisticated S-300 air defense missile systems to Syria to avoid tilting the balance of power in the region.

Russian officials have acknowledged that Moscow signed a deal for the delivery of the powerful missiles a few years ago, but have been coy about whether any of them have been delivered.

Syrian President Bashar Assad told the Lebanese TV station Al-Manar last week that Russia has fulfilled some of its weapons contracts recently, but he was vague on whether this included the advanced S-300s. Israel's defense minister told a parliamentary committee Monday that according to "Russian talk," the weapon has not yet been delivered.

Speaking after a Russia-European Union summit in the Ural Mountains city of Yekaterinburg, Putin defended the S-300 deal, saying it complies with the international law, but added that Russia hasn't yet fulfilled it.

"The contract has been signed a few years ago. It hasn't been fulfilled yet,"
Putin said.

"As for the S-300s, it's one of the best air defense systems in the world," Putin said following a Russia-EU summit. "It's a serious weapon. We would not like to tip the balance of power in the region. We signed the contract a few years ago. It has not been implemented yet."

France Has 'Proof' Chemical Weapons Used

France says tests on chemical samples taken from Syria prove the deadly nerve agent sarin gas has been used several times during the civil conflict.

Foreign minister Laurent Fabius made the announcement on Tuesday, citing tests carried out by a French laboratory, but did not give any details of where or by whom the poison gas had been used.

He said: "These tests show the presence of sarin in various samples in our possession.

"France is certain that sarin gas was used several times in Syria in limited areas.

"It would be unacceptable that those guilty of these crimes remain unpunished."

He added that the test results had been handed to the United Nations.

British Foreign Secretary William Hague said he welcomed the decision by France to share the information related to the samples with a UN investigation.

"The scale of the atrocities being committed by the Assad regime is becoming ever clearer," he said.

"This announcement adds further weight to the need for a full and unimpeded investigation into all relevant incidents. The UN investigation team must be allowed unrestricted access to investigate on the ground in Syria and we call on the Assad regime to fully cooperate with it."

The US said more work needed to be done to establish who was responsible for the use of sarin gas, the amount used and the circumstances in which the chemical weapon was used.

Good work France.

As there is evidence that chemical weapons have been used, the time has come to act.

Stupid Englishman. And the "rebels" are not atrocious? Is only Assad doing the wrong thing?

If Assad is toppled, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3 becomes reality! Chemical weapons explode in London!
