British Muslims fighting in Syria could commit terrorist attacks in UK

There are "hundreds" of Europeans now fighting in Syria, some of whom are with groups linked to al Qaeda, the Home Office has told MPs.
In an annual report on its Contest counter-terrorism strategy, the Home Office warned of the risk to Britain and other European nations posed by foreign fighters now gaining military experience in Syria.
The Home Office warning – based on assessments by British intelligence agencies – comes as ministers debate doing more to arm and support the rebels fighting the regime of Syria's President Bashar al-Assad.
The uprising in Syria "has involved many organisations with different political views and tactics; some are connected with and supported by al Qaeda in Iraq," the Home Office report says.
It adds: "These terrorist groups conducted over 600 attacks in 2012 and, like others associated with al Qaeda, continue to attract recruits from this country and elsewhere in Europe.

"There are now hundreds of foreign fighters from Europe in Syria. As and when UK residents return here there is a risk that they may carry out attacks using the skills that they have developed overseas."
Britain has sent a variety of equipment to anti-Assad forces, but stopped short of supplying weapons.
A European Union arms embargo currently prevents EU nations supplying lethal weapons to anyone in Syria.
Earlier this month, David Cameron suggested that Britain was willing to defy that ban and arm the rebels.
The Home Office report may raise doubts about such a decision.
The report, presented to Parliament by Theresa May, the Home Secretary, also highlights the risks posed to Britain by terrorists using biological weapons, and those conducting attacks using firearms.

Goes without saying.

Those who go to Syria should not allowed to return. That's too simple, of course.

Not sure whether British Government used them, but it is very likely they did. In any event, there was a lot of involvement of Pakistani and Pakistani origin people, some involved in waging Jihad, while some involved in airlifting weapons from Pakistan, at various stages in the several civil wars in the territories of the former Yugoslavia.

Opposition takes Syria seat at Arab League summit

There was applause as the Emir of Qatar invited Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib to take the seat
Syria's opposition National Coalition has taken the country's official seat at the Arab League summit in Qatar.

The delegation led by Ahmed Moaz al-Khatib, who has said he will resign as head of the coalition, was applauded as it formally assumed the seat.

Mr Khatib called it "part of the restoration of legitimacy" of which Syrians had "long been robbed".

Later, the Arab League authorised member states to give military support to Syrian rebel groups.

Thanks for that. I believe ISI Chiefs were also involved in Balkan conflict, shipping weapons etc. and British Govt "encouraged" Brit Muslims (mostly of Pak origin) to fight there.

So they were in bed with the "Jihadis" when it suited them, and now...

The Nazis had Muslim SS unites in the Balkans. Don't know about Brits.

13th Waffen Mountain Division of the SS Handschar (1st Croatian) - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
It was the first non-Germanic Waffen-SS division, and its formation marked the expansion of the Waffen-SS into a multi-ethnic military force.[5] Composed of Bosnian Muslims (ethnic Bosniaks) with some Catholic Croat soldiers and mostly German and Yugoslav Volksdeutsche (ethnic German) officers and non-commissioned officers, it took an oath of allegiance to both Adolf Hitler and the Croatian leader Ante Pavelić.[6]

Iran criticises Arab League over Syria

Iran has criticised the Arab League for allowing an opposition leader to fill Syria's vacant seat at the organisation's annual summit and described it as "dangerous behaviour".

With Syrian membership to the 22-member league suspended in November 2011, the seat at Tuesday's summit was filled by Moaz al-Khatib, the leading figure among Syria's opposition coalition that is battling to overthrow President Bashar al-Assad.

"Assigning Syria's seat to the Arab League to those who don't have the backing of the people establishes a pattern of dangerous behaviour for the Arab world that can set a new precedent for other members of the Arab League in the future," said deputy foreign minister, Hossein Amir Abdullahian, Iran's student news agency (ISNA) reported on Tuesday.

"These actions will bring an end to the organisation's role in the region," he said.

Shia Iran has given crucial backing to Assad since the protests erupted in Syria in 2011.

Tehran regards him as key in the axis of resistance against Israel and a bulwark against what it says are extremist Sunni groups operating in Syria.

Iran has proposed a six-point plan for Syria and emphasised the importance of elections and reforms, but does not accept the removal of Assad, saying a solution to the crisis cannot be imposed from outside the country.

At the summit in Doha, the Qatari capital, Khatib demanded that the opposition be allowed to also represent Syria at the United Nations.

'Only Syrians decide'

Taking the seat at the invitation of Qatar's emir, Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, Khatib was flanked by other senior opposition figures, including newly elected opposition prime minister Ghassan Hitto.

"We demand... all forms of support from our friends and brothers including our full right for self-defence," Khatib said.

He called for a "freezing of the funds of the regime which it stole from our people", estimated by the opposition at around $2bn.

He also stressed that the Syrian people alone would determine the future of their country.

"They ask who will rule Syria. The people of Syria will decide, not any other state in this world," Khatib said in an apparent allusion to the influence of summit host Qatar and its heavyweight neighbour Saudi Arabia over the opposition.

The summit endorsed the provision of military aid to Syrian rebels.

A communique affirmed member states had a right to offer assistance "including military, to support the steadfastness of the Syrian people and the Free Army".

However, "efforts aimed at reaching a political solution to the Syrian crisis are a priority," it added.

Khatib asked US Secretary of State John Kerry for American forces to help defend rebel-controlled northern parts of Syria with Patriot surface-to-air missiles based in Turkey.

NATO swiftly rebuffed the idea.
