CIA isn't stopping guns and RPGs, they are only there to prevent proliferation of MANPADs.
I hope you are correct. That is just a hope.

The CIA has funded purchases of Toyota pick-ups and Warsaw Pact Kalashnikovs, PKs, etc., and supplied them to the Mujahideen to be used against the Afghan and Soviet Armies in the 80s. They also supplied Stingers. They are quite capable of doing that now in Syria.

CIA was banned from proliferating MANPADs after 9-11 by the Wassenaar Arrangement.

From the link above, point 1.6:

"--To ban transfers of Manpads to non-state end-users; Manpads should only be exported to foreign governments or to agents authorised by a government;"

I reiterate, I hope you are correct, and it is only a hope.

The more detailed rule...

2.1 Decisions to permit MANPADS exports will be made by the exporting government by competent authorities at senior policy level and only to foreign governments or to agents specifically authorized to act on behalf of a government after presentation of an official End-User Certificate (EUC) certified by the government of the receiving country.

That eliminates any clandestine outflow of Stinger missiles by CIA unless they want to break the law.

The collapse of the Assad regime is a foregone conclusion now yet it still amazes how 2 years ago this would not have been seriously entertained by a lot of people.

The Assad experience should bring into question the long held assumptions on the current Iranian regime... :thumb:

US, UK training Syria activists

Damascus: The United States and Britain are offering an underground network of Syrian opposition activists training and supplies of vital equipment in a bid to forge an effective alternative to the regime of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, it has emerged.

Recipients of the aid are provided satellite communications and computers so that they can act as a local 'hub' linking local activists and the outside world.

According to The Telegraph, the training takes place in Istanbul districts, and dozens of dissidents have been ferried out of Syria to be vetted for foreign backing.

The report said that the schemes are overseen by the US State Department's Office of Syrian Opposition Support (OSOS) and Foreign Office officials.

America has set aside USD 25 million for political opponents of Assad, while Britain has granted GBP five million to the cause of overthrowing the regime, the paper said.

A British consultant overseeing the programme said that the UK and the US are moving cautiously to improve the capabilities of the opposition.

"We are not 'king-making' in Syria. The UK and the US are moving cautiously to help what has been developing within Syria to improve the capabilities of the opposition," the paper quoted the consultant, as saying.

"What's going to come next? Who is going to control territory across Syria? We want to give civilians the skills to assert leadership," the consultant added.

But the activists also face two days of vetting designed to ensure that the programme does not fall into the trap of promoting sectarian agendas or the rise of al Qaeda-style fundamentalists.

"Rather than being about promoting political platforms in Syria, it's about creating a patchwork of people who share common values," the consultant said.

Urban warfare. That Soviet era tank does not stand a chance in that kind of combat. It need a lot more all-around protection. In this case it seemed the ammo exploded as there appeared to be a huge secondary explosion.
We have discussed this in other place, Nothing happens to the tank, the Rocket malfunctioned and drop after fired, the round exploded near to a car gas tank..

Beside T-72m1 front Armour is good enough to take a RPG-7 hit..

The RPG hit the tank on the front of the track skirt. It was an HE frag and the explosion set the car on fire. The tank wasn't destroyed but its track certainly was. It is exactly where you would want to hit it with an HE round.

This part of the planet is full of nut cases who have not lived peacefully, are not willing to learn to live with each other and will not live with dignity in the foreseeable future. They have been blessed with natural resources yet they keep killing each other.

Syrian Helicopter Downed in Damascus
AP August 27, 2012

BEIRUT—A Syrian military helicopter caught fire and crashed Monday after it was apparently hit during fighting between government forces and rebels in the capital Damascus, an activist group said.

State-run media confirmed the crash in Damascus but gave no details. A video posted on the Internet showed the helicopter engulfed in flames shortly before it hit the ground. The authenticity of the video couldn't be independently verified.

Syria's state-run media also reported that authorities on Monday released more than 200 people detained for their participation in street protests. It said those freed were never involved in acts of violence.

Authorities have issued similar pardons in the past, a practice apparently designed to isolate the rebels and create the image of a compassionate regime.

The Britain-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights, which reported the chopper crash, said there was intense fighting between troops backed by helicopter gunships and rebels in the western Damascus neighborhood of Jobar. State media said the chopper crashed in al-Qaboun district, which is close to Jobar.

With its forces stretched thin by fighting on multiple fronts, President Bashar Assad's regime has been increasingly using air power against the rebels—both helicopters and warplanes. The military for more than a month has been fighting major battles against rebels in Damascus and its suburbs while engaged in what appears to be a stalemate in the north, battling rebels for control of Aleppo, the nation's largest city and commercial capital.

The rebels aren't known to have any answer to the regime's warplanes except anti-aircraft guns that they mostly use as an anti-personnel weapon. Last month, rebels claimed to have shot down a Russian-made MiG fighter, but the government blamed the crash on a technical malfunction.

The Syrian conflict began 17 months ago with mostly peaceful protests demanding that Mr. Assad step down, but it has since morphed into a civil war. Rights activists say at least 20,000 people have been killed to date.

Monday's fighting in Damascus followed mounting evidence of a spate of killings by government forces in the Damascus suburb of Daraya.

Activists over the weekend reported government forces going on a killing spree after they seized Daraya from rebels Thursday. Reports of the death toll ranged from more than 300 to as many as 600.

It was impossible to independently verify the death tolls because of severe restrictions on media coverage of the conflict.

Video footage posted on the Internet by activists showed rows of bodies, many of them men with gunshot wounds to their heads. During mass burials on Sunday, bodies were sprayed with water from hoses — a substitute for the ritual washing prescribed by Islam in the face of so many dead.

The gruesome images appeared to expose the lengths to which Mr. Assad's authoritarian regime was willing to go to put down the rebellion that broke out in March last year.

In an ominous commentary, Mr. Assad was quoted by Syrian state media Sunday as saying during a meeting with a senior Iranian official that his regime would carry on fighting "whatever the price."

Re: Syria Developments

Britain and US plan a Syrian revolution from an innocuous office block in Istanbul - Telegraph

Dozens of dissidents have been ferried out of Syria to be vetted for foreign backing. Recipients of the aid are given satellite communications and computers so that they can act as a local "hub" linking local activists and the outside world.

The training takes place in an Istanbul district where handsome apartment blocks line the steep slopes and rooftop terraces boast views over the Golden Horn waterway.

Behind closed doors the distractions of outdoor coffee shops and clothing boutiques gives way to power point displays charting the mayhem sweeping Syria.

"We are not 'king-making' in Syria. The UK and the US are moving cautiously to help what has been developing within Syria to improve the capabilities of the opposition," said a British consultant overseeing the programme. "What's going to come next? Who is going to control territory across Syria. We want to give civilians the skills to assert leadership."

France confirms it is working to establish buffer zone within Syria

France has confirmed that Western states were working with Turkey to establish buffer zones within Syria as the international community scrambled to formulate a response to the rapidly worsening crisis in the country.

Turkish requests for a buffer zone, which would provide a haven not just for civilians but also for Syrian rebels operating along both sides of the border, have been so far rebuffed by the United States.
