Indian Air Force signs Rs 1500 crore deal with Russia for R-27 air-to-air missiles
The R-27 missile is designed to destroy air targets in adverse weather conditions at any time of day.
he Indian Air Force (IAF) has signed a deal with Russia for buying R-27 air-to-air missiles worth over Rs 1500 crore. The missiles will be fitted on the Su-30MKI fighter planes. The missiles will further strengthen the air-to-air combat capability of the air force.
"A contract has been signed with Russia for the acquisition of R-27 air-to-air missile to be fitted on the Su-30MKI combat aircraft fleet of the Indian Air Force," government sources said.
The R-27 missile is designed to destroy air targets in adverse weather conditions at any time of day.
The missile has a length of 4m, a body diameter of 0.23m and wingspan of 0.77m. The weight of the missile is 253kg. The R-27 can be launched from an altitude of 25km, up to a range of 60km. The guidance system of the missile includes semi-active radar seeker with command updates.
The missiles have been acquired under 10-I projects which mandate the three services to maintain critical weapon systems and spares for a specified minimum period, which is known as War Wastage Reserve (WWR), news agency ANI said.
In the last 50 days, the IAF has signed deals worth over Rs 7,600 crore for acquiring equipment under emergency requirements approved by the Defence Ministry.
The IAF has spent around Rs 7,600 crore in procuring missiles such as the Spice-2000, Strum Ataka ATGMs and a large number of spares under the emergency procurement route.
After the Pulwama attack, the Central government had given emergency powers to the three services to buy whatever equipment is required by them for safeguarding the borders with Pakistan.
Under the powers given, the security forces can buy the equipment of their choice within three months at the cost of up to Rs 300 crore per case.
The emergency powers were given to the forces within a few weeks after the Pulwama attack in which 44 CRPF personnel were killed and India started increasing vigil at the borders with Pakistan, they said.

Air force chief is about to retire and now its time to buy something so he can get last kick back.
Before 26 February 2019, anything made by Russia was outdated, Costly, poor in quality, High cost in maintenance, Not effective in today's scenarios... But suddenly post Balakot, a 253 kg missile with 60 km range ( may be 120km ) became a so advance that they are buying 400 pieces along with other heavy and longer range missiles. These missile were always there for IAF but all these years IAF was busy in Dalali of Derby, Mica, Meteor .....
A 153 kg Astra was rejected for LCA tejas for being too heavy and ordered only 50 missiles just for evaluation only.

"Indeed, rather big contracts on air-to-air missiles were signed some time ago, aiming to deliver about 1,000 different missiles," the defense cooperation agency said.
On Monday, India's ANI news agency reported that New Delhi had signed a contract with Russia to buy R-27 air-to-air missiles.
Medium-range R-27T, R-27R and R-27P air-to-air missiles are designed to destroy aerial targets (highly manoeuvrable airplanes, helicopters, etc.) at any time, day or night, and from any angle. The R-27 is designed to hit targets at an altitude of 20 metres to 25 km at a target speed of up to 3,500 km/h.

Astra hasn't been rejected. It is still in development. 50 ordered are LSP versions. More will be ordered once the development completes. Your post wouldn't look so moronic had you bothered to check the facts here.

From what i heard 300 r73 are cheap war wastage replacements.
400 plus new r27ea have been acquired with 130km range.These replace older r27 models which are phased out/service life over.
Also some r37m have been bought secretly to deal with paki awacs.
Existing r77s to be phased out by end 2021.They will be replaced with either rvv sd /r77-1 or derby er.Tests ongoing.Astra on all jets regardless of origin.
Also ongoing tests of rvvmd to replace r73 incase asraam integration doesnt work through on russian origin jets.
Meteor and mica on rafale and maybe mirage.
Lca to have derby..astra and asraam.
Asraam is possibly the best wvr out there due to its advanced seeker..super kinematic performance and range is almost bvr.Details on asraam can be found on ausairpower.net to some extent.

Kindly let me know which developmental phage of Astra going on?? Please Explain DRDO role in it along with what subsystem need to be developed which was failed in previous trial??
Astra project has completed last year when 7 round were fired. Project completed, may be some upgrades which are normal for any weapon system. Wake up smell your coffee, DRDO is already working on next generation AAM

How are you supposed to have secure communications without it? To tell me that IAF has had open radios all of this time is quite shocking. Frequency hopping radios have been available since the 80s.

Not developmental phase, but user trials still remain. When that happens, the missile will be formally inducted. DRDO working on next gen doesn't mean anything. DRDO is also working on AMCA, while LCA MK2 hasn't even flown yet.

Final user trial was done in Sep 2017 and Preproduction trial done in Sep 2018.
You will never see again any further trial for Astra for your rest of life.
Reason for mentioning Next-generation missile development was that DRDO has told many times in past that Astra mk2 development only commence once MK 1 development is completed
