SU30MKI is twinjet multiroled airsuperiority fighter aircraft designed and developed especially for the IAF requirement by Irkut/Sukhoi when India showed interest in Flanker. The aircraft was originated from the tendem seater trainer version of the su27upg and tailor made for Indian specification by adding ground attack capabilities and features for air superiority role such as, cannards, thrust vectoring and Long range phased array radar. It also integrates Indian systems and avionics as well as French and Israelis subsystems.
While Su30sm is designed and developed for Russian airforce originating and sharing many commonality with the Indian SU30MKI. Besides counter airstrike, counter land and sea mission the aircraft can also conduct electronic countermeasures and early warning tasks. It can also acts as a command and control platform within a fleet of combat aircrafts performing joint mission.

SM has Russian indigenous components (except for Indian mission computers), Al-31FP engine based on Al-31FM-1 (13500kgs thrust against 12700kgs for Al-31FN), pure indigenous N011MR Bars-R radar, which is 50kg liter and has 80+ km greater range, has 101KS Atoll elements (processors and MAWs), has different (more "glass") cockpit and several major software updates.

Now all the Su-30SM are produced as Su-30SM-1 standard (further software upgrades, TKS-3 datalink and several types of PAK FA weapons).
All the earlier produced planes are getting upgraded on the field to SM-1 standard by Irkut engineering teams.
