It is now a war of attrition, typical of every war in that godforesaken region. Imagine USSR lost 9 million soldiers and some 19 million civilians or approximately 20% their entire population in WW2! Combination of fighting in vast, open steppes with no cover for hundreds of miles, brutal combat strategy of just pushing waves and waves of soldiers just to exchange heaps of rubble over and over again all adds to the numbers. This is a stalemate, neither can Russia make any significant progress (their offensive on Avdeevka has lasted more than 2 months now with still no sign of the town falling) nor can Ukraine takeback the territory lost to Russia.

The only winners in such a brutal war are outsiders, namely the Europeans and Americans who will fight until the last Ukrainian. Apart from the human loss, what makes this conflict even a bigger tragedy is two countries losing tens and thousands of young men while already grappling with one of the worst TFRs in the world.

Russia has 140 million people. Ukraine has 31 million people. If every Ukrainian flees, get captured, dies, get maimed, deserts, defects, then so be it. But Russia will win at the at the end of the day and annex the entire Ukraine.
