Russia offers to build Britain's nuclear power stations

Moscow has offered to help Britain build nuclear power stations in partnership with Rolls-Royce, Russia's deputy prime minister Igor Shuvalov has said.

"We discussed joint cooperation in some areas, including the construction of nuclear power plants," said Mr Shuvalov after the talks. "The Russian side is interested in such construction and commissioning of new plants here in Great Britain in cooperation with Rolls-Royce."

Last year Rolls-Royce, which has a specialist nuclear division, signed a memorandum of understanding with Russian state-owned atomic energy corporation to work together on potential new projects.

It seems Britain will have to live with the reality of increasing fossil fuel prices. Only Russia has been building new reactors on a large scale.

How about the French? Before Russia, I think UK will first go to France for such crucial infrastructure as nuclear power reactor.

It could very well be a tender. Or Britain may go for both like how India has been building multiple Nuclear cities in many places with the US, the Russians and the French.

Russians are as aggressive in their marketing as many strings the Americans attach to all of their offers.

For a sensitive infra like nuclear reactor? I think if the Brits cannot source that domestically then it will source it from Western European sources (NATO members).

The Brits can definitely source it domestically, and the technology that they have is a gas cooled reactor that turned out to be a failure.
