Japanese are trying to mimic nuclear submarine endurance with their Taigei class. We don't need that since we are building a separate fleet of SSN. Our diesel submarines will not go far beyond our shores. So we can do something cheaper and more reasonable.
Look at the Houthi situation right now. Till now we used to discuss Naval strategies with Pakistan and Chinese in mind. Now we have suddenly become the biggest protectors in the Aden region, carrying completely different missions. Gone deep into this mission - MARCOs, guided missile destroyers and frigates deep.

The US-led Coalition of Prosperity has initiated air strikes against Houthis, but who is securing the seas? Who is boarding vessels and neutralizing threats to sailors and goods ship-by-ship? Us.

I foresee a situation where Iran might supply Houthis with midget submarines for more attacks once their surface strategy fails. Iran can make simple midget submarines that they can train Houthis. against ships.

They can assure Dr Jaishankar all they want in an air-conditioned meeting hall with ornate furniture meant for foreign guests, but Houthis in the middle of the sea won't care who they attack. A Maltese ship sailing with a mixed Indian crew and flying the flag of Thailand can be carrying our exports or imports worth billions. How would they know that the ship is carrying our stuff and "not to sink or hijack it? They are a bunch of illiterate jihadis who have no formal education except pulling the trigger or whatever training Iranian secret units impart to them.

If the Japanese are mimicking the SSN range, then the Taigei class is exactly what we need. It's not just the Arabian Sea and Bab Al Mandeb that we need to protect; the Bay of Bengal and the entire Indian Ocean will soon become our area of operations. Our submarines will need to go deep to provide cover if this battle or any other submersible threat emerges. Range and ammunition are never enough.

Besides, the US will maintain a presence but it is no guarantee that they will be friendly to us in the coming decade or two. Before the friendly hand withdraws, we need to take as much as we can.

Getting Kawasaki to work with MDL or CSL is of utmost importance to get their submarine technology with us. It is a huge bill but the investment will pay off in a decade seeing the bigger role that we are going to have.

Bruh, too late, France is no longer part of the competition.
MDL along with TKMS and L&T along with Navantia have already responded to the RFP and the project is currently at the technical evaluation stage.

Cost is the key factor. A taigei type with tot will cost us upwards of 1 billion USD per boat. Better go for more SSN as an SSN is multiple times more capable to even most advanced ssk.

If we have to dominate entire Indian Ocean than that will be done with SSN not ssk.

Common Sense Dictates P75I be 9 Super Scorpene Submarine Built by Mazagaon Docks Limited

Common sense dictates that they should cancel p75i. Just order 3 more scorpion for a total of 12 . And then go directly for indigenous ssk derived from scorpion for another 12.
Focus on SSN in future.

But since when indian defence procurement are based on common sense.

SSK with Li ion battery and/or fuel cell... may have a long time under water (several weeks) but never, never with a sustain speed as SSN.
The sole asset of SSK is their silence, but some SSN has a "silent mode" without the use of internal pump in a low energy mode.
Nothing can replace a SSN.

No matter what country's submarine we get it will be wasted in potential, overspent in budget if the govt shipyards had monopoly on it. At any point in future one need to give it to L&T since they had to start at some point from zero.

IN has 3 pronged submarine program :-

1.) Littoral Defence - which is currently handled by our Shishumar class Submarines , Sindhgosh class & in time will be replaced by the Kalvari class of submarines in whatever numbers the budget permits.

2.) Intermediate Defence cum Attack role which is what Project -75I aims to address where the submarines can travel to extended distances of upto 2000 kms + away from Indian coastlines for attack roles ( hence vertically launched {?} - not sure if this has been addressed as there were reports of the ITCM being launched from torpedo tubes due to design limitations by participating foreign OEMs ) with LACM inbuilt capacities within these units & fall back upon our coast for a defensive role if required , where these submarines would also be of an intermediate weight class of ~ 3000 Tons of displacement apart from being equipped with an AIP & / or Li - ion battery pack

3.) Attack roles where the range of our submarines will be essentially limitless apart from providing escort to our CBG , deep sea espionage & counter espionage activities , etc which will be fulfilled by SSNs being constructed under the Project -75 Alpha.

Our indigenous SSK program viz Project 76 will initially focus on littoral defence with design & development of submarines < 2000 tons of displacement before moving on to the intermediate range of submarines ~ 3000 tons of displacement which is why the Project -75I is so important.

On Germany, officials had said India asked Berlin to relax some of their licensing requirements for the export of spares and components under a BAFA (Federal Office for Economic Affairs and Export Control) clearance, and a list was submitted to the German side in this regard. Officials have expressed concern over export clearances from Germany that have cropped up time to time.

Project 75I-class submarine
General characteristics
Type:Attack submarine
Propulsion:Diesel-electric and AIP
Armament:torpedo tube and VLS cells

The Project 75I-class submarines will have a vertical launch system(VLS) to enable them to carry multiple Brahmos supersonic cruise missiles, making the submarines fully capable of anti-surface and anti-ship warfare missions. Project 75i submarines will also be armed with torpedoes and will feature advanced stealth capabilities such as a greater ability to suppress noise and acoustic signatures.[3] Submarines will also be outfitted with Air-independent propulsion (AIP) fuel cells which can significantly increase submerged endurance and operational range
