Uri Attack Fallout: Russia Calls Off Military Exercise With Pakistan

In an apparent fallout of Uri terror attack, Russia has called off its joint military exercise with Pakistan, CNN-News 18 reported on Monday. Russia’s move is a big diplomatic gain for India as the latter had decided to isolate Pakistan at international level. The move comes just a day after 18 soldiers of Indian Army were martyred in a cowardly attack by four highly armed terrorists at an Army camp in Jammu & Kashmir’s Uri district. Earlier, India had urged Russia to reconsider its decision to hold joint military drills with Pakistan. Pakistan and Russia were scheduled to conduct the ‘Druzhba-2016’ tactical exercises from September 24-October 7 in Rattu and Cherat. The Indian External Affairs Ministry had sent a letter to Kremlin soon after the Islamabad confirmed about excercise. In its letter, India said that Moscow should keep New Delhi’s sensitivity in mind while conducting joint military drills with Pakistan.
In a high-level meeting chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Monday, India took the decision to diplomatically isolate Pakistan at every international grouping, reported ANI quoting sources. According to the report, India will adopt the strategy to present all actionable evidence against Pakistan if required at international bodies.
It has also been reported that the Indian Permanent Mission to UN will issue a statement taking on Islamabad soon after Pakistan Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif will make his speech at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA).

Can we be sure that Messrs Modi and Sharif will provide it?As the UN General Assembly gets underway this coming week, the world was preparing to be treated to the ungainly spectacle of the two countries trading barbs with each other both inside the General Assembly hall, and outside it.Uri is indeed different because it comes at a time when hopes of better relations between Pakistan and India have already derailed. Doubling down repression in Kashmir, and the baiting of Pakistan during Modi’s August 15 speech means no détente was intended or scheduled.Pathankot disrupted that momentum, but it did not totally destroy it. Uri attack: AMU does well to expel student after objectionable Facebook post

The country is in mourning and TV channels are still beaming live pictures of wreath laying ceremony for the 18 martyred soldiers who were killed after four heavily armed terrorists attacked an administrative base near 12 battalion headquarters in Uri close to the Line of Control (LoC) early morning on Sunday. Within hours of the attack, a student of Aligarh Muslim University had to pay the price for his objectionable comments on Facebook.



Modasir Yousuf, a student of MSc in Organic Chemistry hailing from Kashmir was expelled for posting objectionable comments on the Uri terror attack which was taken very seriously by the Vice Chancellor, Lt Gen Zameer Uddin Shah. As per reports, Yousuf offered his apologies later, but university authorities went ahead with his expulsion due to the sensitivity of the issue.

The unrest in Kashmir after Burhan Wani’s death still refuses to subside after two months where crackdowns and arrests have become the norm. The current situation has led to their robust tourism industry suffering a huge blow to the state’s economy. While the entire nation sympathises with the average Kashmiri who wants to lead a normal life like any other citizen of India, such kind of comments are unpardonable.

AMU has done well to take a quick decision. By clamping down on the issue, the university has nipped in the bud another potential debate on freedom of expression before the issue could gather steam. This was a well-planned attack by terrorists who sneaked inside a defence installation and killed mostly unarmed soldiers who were sleeping.

The fact that two grenade launchers and 36 grenades were recovered from the four dead terrorists indicates that non-state actors from across the border were involved. Demeaning the sacrifice of our soldiers can have dangerous consequences and AMU authorities rightly took swift action to pre-empt the incident from being politicised, which runs the risk of being painted in communal colours.
