SLRs are still in service with the army and CAPFs. It is still in limited series production in the OFB and time to time some orders come from state police and CAPFs.

SLR 1C is full auto and it used along LOC.

SLR with CRPFs in Naxal belt. Notice the muzzle break.

This one looks very new

In a DMR role with optics

Upgraded with picatiny rails and bipod and optics

We have a huge inventory of SLR of million+. It deserves a re-look as a low cost DMR option, since army has become interested in 7.62 NATO caliber assault rifles as its primary infantry weapon. What is required is a deep upgrade like Dragunov upgrade) of some of them from FAB Defence/ SSS defence. Example (from DS Arms):

It looks beautiful FN FAL is still beast. India should definitely modernize the FN FAL allowing them to be equipped with Modern Sights and Accessories turning the side against Maoist Terrorists.

FN FAL and it's variants are in frontline service with many south american nations like Brazil. SLR when it was with Indian Army, had a 21 inch barrel and could hit a target at 700-800m. But it's effectiveness couldn't be fully exploited due to lack of optics back then. Today the situation have changed any we are seeing more no. of optics with our forces.
Also, army complained of large size of the weapon which limited it's use in counter insurgency and high recoil. Today, since FAL license have experired many compsnies like DSA, Imbel etc. are producing their own version of modern FAL. DSA offers them different barell lengths, and even in different calibers.

FAL is a 3 MOA gun. It isn't accurate enough to hit man sized targets beyond 400m.

On a side note, same with Tavor-7 and ACE-52. That is why I was extremely happy when Army chose Sig-716, and even more so when I heard it was the DI version. With regular cleaning, that thing is going to be the best gun for the LoC, bar none. It is a sub 1 MOA gun btw.

FAL with a shorter barrel will have a hell of a recoil impulse. And it is going to be loud as fuck. Army doesn't issue hearing protection to soldiers, so they are gonna have a problem if they start issuing FAL SBRs. Not to mention, the accuracy will deteriorate further with a shorter barrel..

(MOA is minute of angle. It is used to measure accuracy of the gun. 1/60th of a degree. The linear spread of 1 MOA is about 1.025" at 100m. Approx 1" at 100m. Double at 200m and so on.)

I just remembered this video which was uploaded last year of 9th Gurkha Rifles, despite being a pretty decent song, few things you can notice is that all of them had BPJ, 'ballistic' helmets, holographic sights, binoculars etc which are basic stuff, overall pretty good sight to see ngl. According to the latest report (i forgot what was it about but it did mentioned about it), most of the frontline troops have received at least this basic equipment or soon to get those.
