For sure, if this LSV tender is finally succesful along with the FICV going to a private player (please not OFB) then the defence service's vehicle requirements will be fully taken care of by the private industry within the next decade as these two programs will require private industry to invest mammoth ammounts in R&D, manpower and infrastructure.


LSV and FICV will completely change the landscape for the industry, instead of them having an add-on defence business with products largely just modified civlian vehicles from their portfolio they will have fully fledged defence subsidaries designing and producing bespoke solutions purely for the military.

Inspired by US Military's Hummer, India's Tata Motors is developing a made-in-India extreme off-road vehicle for the Indian Army.

Tata Motors’ new Light Strike Vehicle – LSV V2 has been spied testing with military grade doors and hatch for roof mounted machine gun operator. The vehicle, styled much like the famed Hummer which is used by the US Military, was spied when Gurpreet Singh (Mototourer Gurpreet) when he was enroute Sach Pass on his KTM Duke 390.

Tata’s new LSV V2 is believed to be capable of a top speed of over 100 kmph. Its compact size allows it to be more versatile for multiple uses which other larger armoured vehicle cannot accomplish. In the Himalayas, this new Tata Hummer styled vehicle will be performing all sorts of heavy duty off-road tests.



Though under heavy camouflage, several elements have been noted while a graphic sketch draws more attention to these updates. This upcoming Light Armoured Vehicle from Tata Motors, comes to the aid of infantry venturing into the battle ground. It allows them to be safe within the confines of the armoured vehicle and well protected from gunfire in counter insurgency operations, while at the same time ensuring quick and safe entry and exit from these regions.

The test mule from Tata Motors receives some upgrades. The cabin is bullet proof with military grade doors while windows receive toughened and bullet proof glass. A hatch for a roof mounted machine gun operator is also evident in the sketch. The rear end of the Tata Motors Light Strike Vehicle also receives an open space which makes this a multipurpose vehicle to carry food, ammunition and troops along with other supplies to the battle front.



Just a few months back, Tata Motors secured one of their largest orders from the Indian Army – an order which could potentially see them sell over 30,000 units of Safari Storme to the Indian Army. Indian Army has decided to replace their entire fleet of Maruti Gypsy with the Tata Safari Storme over the next few years.

Yes, that's a bit of a weird feature on the TATA design, I'm not too sure why that arrangement would be of use.

The rear section is not protected at all:

this will allow the LSV to be used in a multitude of roles and allows for a high degree of modularity on this one platform, there should easily be 4-6 roles that this one vehicle can perform depending on how it is configured (ambulance, recce/scout, utility, strike, C&C etc etc). TATA is certainly learning fast and has approached this RFI with the idea of creating a family of vehicles to serve in multiple roles within the IA and perhaps other forces.

Depending on the role the rear section can be adapted accordingly, the TATA design gives a great degree of flexibility to the IA. I wonder if TATA themselves will come up with role-specific modules to fit onto the LSV:

@abingdonboy so essentially, if the role of the LSV is troop carriage it will add plates to the rear? Otherwise its a a matter of concern if IA thinking is getting a vehicle similar to gypsy- with the rear part only covered in cloth.

Sure, if in the role of a troop carrier armoured plates can/will be added to the rear section.

I'm 100% sure that TATA is only offering this design because it conforms to what the IA wants so I'm sure the IA is looking to get a multi-use vehicle so I wouldn't be concerned. Obviously this vehicle is 1000s times better than the Gypsy when it comes to protection, mobility and utility.

We are assuming from pics that this a double cab design. It is quite possible that the rear is open from the back, hence it's actually a nice compromise between protection and weight.

I meant this particular is brand new and model has not been seen so far in NSG service. This is a double cab model. Maybe more have been acquired as NSG purchase was very small.
