Bich india makes all of the fuselage (except the radome & engine, that's imported)... Other than that the refueling probe, HMDS, radar & ejection seat are still imported.

Those are the low use high-end stuff, ie, they require a considerably high amount of money in the R&D compared to more parts/subsystems (like radar that we've now developed).
True. And the real maturity of our aerospace industry will be revealed when the LCA Mk2 comes out. While yes we are trying to build 5th gen aircrafts and naval aircrafts, the near term goal is to take our industry to a point where we can design and build a Gripen-E class of aircraft without much fuss. Thats where our own industry, and the ability to integrate niche technologies from abroad (until we make them here) comes into play.

Radome, IFR proble, HMD, etc are very capital intensive and RoI is lower in comparison. But I would like to see at least the radome and hmd being designed in india. Radome because it can be highly customized to our radars, and HMDs because they can be tailor made for our pilots.

By the same logic we are wasting money developing engines as we can buy them off the shelf as in the case of Tejas, same goes for Uttam AESA radar (we can get ToT for EL/M-2052) or DARE EW warfare suite (we can get ToT for EL/M-8222 jammer and its Eco-system) and the list goes on.
That's exactly why we've importing engines & radars until now!

Now we are in a position to have developed our own radar & then jammer, someday later engine... work on desi ejection seat is ongoing. And HMDS & HUD will happen last, when everything else is done.

Not the entire refuelling probe is imported, only nose tip of the probe is imported. This is said by Grp Capt HVT sir.

Heck chonks imported these components for long enough , and hmd is not too much capital intensive as much as radome , hud is costly endeavor but it can be ditched as many are doing it .

We were importing engines & radars until now because our projects failed to deliver products with expected performance. We are not because importing was cheap as inferred by your statement.
Both Kaveri and MMR projects failed hence we had to source engine from GE and radar from Elta Systems.

The whole point of project like Tejas is to cultivate and develop local eco-system. Buying parts off the shelf won't help with that.
desi ejection seat is ongoing
A genuine request to all fellow members to refrain use of word desi for Indian projects as it downgrades the product image as some cheap Indian makeshift product. Especially in current times when we are attempting to inroads in defence export. PR and image plays very important role in today's world and words like desi are counterproductive to our product's image.
