PCC Airfoils, a company based in Merida, has recorded sales of as much as $120 million a year. This company and others in Merida, a city which exports to the United States, Canada and other parts of the world, are positioning Yucatan as a recognized state for the aerospace industry.

“In this sector, important exports are made from the Yucatan. PCC Airfoils is dedicated to manufacturing turbine parts,” explained Torres Parraud.

PCC specializes in finishing the process of making turbines, especially in the manufacturing of blades and key parts, while operating turbomachinery which is responsible for diverting the flow of current in the aircraft.

The blades or propellers are made in plants in Oregon, United States, and are subsequently moved to Merida to be completed and then sent to different fina destinations.

“It requires specialized labor, each piece will have to undergo an X-ray to check if there’s cracks or casting defects needed to be rectified, processes that require advanced knowledge of welding. We are talking about nickel alloys, stainless steel and methane,” said Torres Parraud.

To carry out this procedure, you need specialized equipment; Merida has it. There is also manpower, with engineers focused on this sector. So far there are more than six thousand people in Yucatan working in the aerospace sector.

The Mayan Journey

05/19/2020 |

John Manuel Contreras
The Mayan Journey

Merida Yucatan
Tuesday May 19, 2020

Yesterday the first stage of economic reactivation began in Yucatan with the reopening of the aerospace, aeronautics and automotive manufacturing industries. In the case of aerospace, about a thousand employees of the only company dedicated to this area in the state returned to work maintaining strict prevention measures.

This is PCC Airfoils, a company located in the Ampliación Ciudad Industrial subdivision of the Yucatecan capital, which since 2001 has been dedicated to the manufacture of aircraft parts and provides finishing operations for various products from the company's other plants.

It is the world's leading company in structural investment casting, forged components and aerodynamic castings for aircraft engines and industrial gas turbines.

At the beginning of the year, the government of Yucatan, through its head, Mauricio Vila Dosal, signed a letter of intent with the Spanish company Deimos belonging to the Elecnor group to make an investment in aerospace and satellite matters in the entity.

The amount of said investment would amount to 130 million dollars so that, in its first stage, a technological center in satellite and space matters would be installed, where 200 engineers would work directly and 600 people indirectly, this with the purpose of building communication and research satellites.

The document signed in Madrid was the product of a work tour that the president made in June of last year when he attended the 53rd edition of the International Paris Air Show, where he met with directors and representatives of the most important aeronautical companies worldwide. .

The letter of intent expresses the legitimate interest in investing in Yucatan, previous feasibility and sustainability analysis studies of the project. That is why they would work with the federal and state authorities in order to know all the paperwork in Mexico in aerospace matters.

The information collected by the satellites could be used for coastal surveillance, security, search for lost fishermen, transit of boats, planes, migratory matters, meteorology, hurricane surveillance, damage, fires.

The investment would have placed the state as the first in Mexico where satellites would be built, with which Yucatan would have been consolidated in the world of the aerospace industry. However, there has been no news of the future of the project in the face of the health emergency derived from COVID-19.

There are experts in the field who see Yucatan as fertile land for this type of industry, such as Luis Lizcano, general director of the Mexican Federation of the Aerospace Industry (Femia), who in January of this year told a national media outlet that the firm of the agreement with Deimos he speaks of the state as a player in the sector, as he recalled that thanks to PCC Airfoils there are already a thousand workers in the industry.

Lizcano explained that geographically, the entity's location favors both reception issues -for the testing of satellite communication equipment, as in the case of Deimos- but it also opens up the testing of more advanced manufactures, even considering aerospace launches, although the latter has not been considered.

As well as Deimos, PCC Airfoils announced at the beginning of the year the investment of 300 million pesos to expand its production capacity with a 18,400-square-meter nickel-based blade and ceramic core foundry complex, which will generate 1,600 jobs. direct and will contribute 3 thousand indirect.

HALCON PLANE 2 MADE IN GTO 05
The Guanajuato governor explained that this Mexican plane has the capacity to make flights of five or six hours. "You could easily get from here to any point in the country, to Tamaulipas, to Yucatan."

A special feature of Halcón 2 is that it works with Premium gasoline and not with jet fuel, the fuel used by most aircraft.

During his speech, Diego Sinhué recognized Giovanni Angielucci, general director of the Horizontec company, "manufacturer of this plane because he has made Guanajuato his home, thank you for trusting us."

Who is behind the 100% Mexican plane?
Halcón 2 was designed and built by engineers from the National Polytechnic Institute (IPN) and technicians from CONALEP.

Historical! The Halcón II flies for the first time, a 100% Mexican aircraft
BY ERICK CERQUEIRA JULY 6, 2022

Reading time: 3 minutes
After a presentation ceremony at the Capitan Rogelio Castillo National Airport (CYW), the first prototype of the Horizontec Halcón H2 —a 100% Mexican aircraft— took off and successfully completed its first flight. It is the successor version of the Halcón H1, Horizontec's light sport aircraft (LSA) that first flew five years ago; and the third aircraft developed in Mexico, after Oaxaca Aerospace's PE-210A Pegasus single-engine trainer.

The historic moment was recorded around 12:12 LT (GMT-5) on Monday, July 4, in Celaya, Guanajuato, in the presence of some 300 guests, including the city's mayor, Javier Mendoza Márquez, and the state governor. , Diego Sinhue Rodríguez Vallejo. The first flight was made with the prototype registration XB-SCG (s/n 001) under the command of the pilot and engineer José Javier Barbosa Castro, 23 years old, and lasted seven minutes.

It might also interest you: AISG receives capital contribution from Discovery Americas for its expansion
According to Horizontec, the aircraft must carry out 50 test flights to meet the certification requirements demanded by the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC). The company was born from an incubator at the Aeronautical University in Querétaro (UNAQ) and the project to develop and assemble a 100% Mexican aircraft began eight years ago, in 2015; so they worked together with the National Center for Aeronautical Technology (CENTA) and the Center for Engineering and Industrial Development (CIDESI) to make it a reality.

In this regard, Giovanni Angelucci, Director of Horizontec, commented:

The project was born in 2015; was born with a very simple vision, we wanted to achieve an excellent product using new technologies, I am referring above all to carbon fiber or epoxy resin, light materials and new digital tools; when I talk about digital tools I mean design software programs”.

The company chose the Calaya Airport as its home and already has two hangars for the development and construction of its current and future products; a third hangar is under construction. And that's where the manufacturer began assembling the Halcón II on February 2 of this year. A historical fact, since 105 years have passed since the Aviator Pilot Lieutenant, Horacio Ruiz Gaviño, on August 24, 1917, made the first flight of an aircraft made in Mexico.

The investment that the company will make will be $10 million dollars, with the creation of 140 jobs; So far, $4 million has already been invested. The Halcón II project is made of carbon fiber, epoxy resins and light materials; It is an aircraft of the Light Sport Aircraft (LSA) category, which allows a less complex certification process, but fully complies with the international standards of the American Society for Testing and Materials (ASTM). Its design is sporty, so it can be used for basic aviator training, recreational flying and aerial security surveillance; but the first target market will be flight schools.

With a cost that varies between $120 and $160 thousand dollars, the Halcón H2 has capacity for two occupants; its panel has Garmin 3GX avionics and is powered by an Austrian Rotax 915 iS engine, with a range of up to 810 nautical miles (1,500 kilometers). There are two fuel tank options, one of 90 liters and one of 120 liters, with computerized fuel injection, being able to fly for 5 or 6 hours, with a cruising speed of 135 knots (250 kilometers per hour).

From the Cockpit
According to the manufacturer, it is 6.1 meters long and 2.3 meters high, with an empty weight of 300 kilograms and a maximum takeoff weight (MTOW) of 600 kilograms. The structure is made up of composite materials such as carbon fiber and epoxy resins and aeronautical grade aluminum; It has the latest technology worldwide, the resins are French, the materials are German.

Hydra Technologies, a Mexican company specialized in the design and manufacture of Unmanned Aerial Systems, or UAVs for its acronym in English, for military, police and civil use, has taken a relevant qualitative leap by presenting its first Tactical artillery UAV, capable of performing ground attacks: the S-45 Baalam.

The model was developed by the Mexican company in collaboration with the Turkish Military Industry (Turkish Defense & Aerospace), whose catalog shows the consolidated development of five advanced unmanned aircraft: Anka, Bayraktar, Karayel, Anka Aksunaur and Bayraktar Akinci. The latter is the armed model that can carry rockets and attack systems weighing 1,350 kilos.

1659773659774.png

The S-45 Baalam from Hydra Technologies is an advanced version of the S-4, widely used by the armed forces, the National Guard, security forces and civil protection agencies that have dedicated the use of these systems to the monitoring and control of pests and fighting forest fires as early warning instruments.

The S-45 Baalam is capable of performing ground attacks by dropping guided munitions and loitering munitions on defined targets. This aircraft has been operated since 2004 without weapons by the Mexican armed forces and by the National Guard (formerly the Federal Police), in missions of strategic surveillance, protection of strategic installations and support in diplomatic events.

The aircraft shown at Farnborough is the first of its kind to be manufactured by Hydra Technologies. The S-45 Baalam can operate day and night, in any weather condition, has an operating radius of up to 120 kilometers, a range of 12 hours of flight, and can take off with a headwind of up to 22 knots ( around 40 kilometers per hour), has a weight of 80 kilograms, can operate on runways between 350 and 500 meters long, its operating ceiling is 17 thousand feet (about 5 thousand meters high), it develops a maximum speed of 85 knots (about 157 kilometers per hour) and its effective and recommended operating ceiling is between 4,000 and 8,000 feet in altitude (up to 2.5 kilometers in height).

Hydra Technologies is a Mexican company based in Guadalajara, Jalisco, and since 2004 it has been working with the Secretary of National Defense (SEDENA) providing the Mexican Air Force (FAM) with twenty unmanned devices of various models. At the time, it sold UAVs to the Federal Police, material that was later transferred to the National Guard in 2019.

HE: What is your greatest achievement so far? And what is your greatest challenge?

RKT: In terms of height, we reached 85kms with a solid rocket a few years ago.

As far as fuels are concerned, successful experiments have been carried out with “sweet”, mixed (some called ecological) and liquid fuels.

Static tests of liquid fueled engines have been successfully performed at various power ranges.

Regarding manufacturing: RKT Aerospace designs, develops and manufactures the rockets 100% in Saltillo Mexico.

We can say that our greatest current challenge is to finish a liquid fuel-based engine with a power of 75 Kilo Newtons, which uses liquid oxygen and kerosene on which I have been working for about 10 years.

A second challenge is to launch a rocket that was canceled on 2 occasions and that must reach 120kms in height.

HE What can you tell us about the near and medium-term future? What plans are there?

RKT: The projects we have had since 2018 are focused on the development of liquid and hybrid engines, for now we are leaving solid engines, due to issues of permits for the use of controlled substances. And we believe that there is a larger field for research in the area of liquid fueled engines.

In the short term, we want to perfect liquid fuel engines applicable to suborbital sounding rocket flights. We want Mexico to have its own technology and for it to be accessible to our Universities.

In the medium term; the construction and suborbital launch of liquid fueled sounding rockets for scientific and academic purposes.

In the long term, we dream of Mexico having a Spaceport and a Propulsion Laboratory.

HE: For your long-term plans and dreams, I'll tell you that there are joint state initiatives with the AEM to study the feasibility of a Spaceport, which this pandemic has delayed. In this second point of your dreams I give you good news, the AEM, in its EdoMex facilities that will open this year, as soon as the pandemic allows it, there is a space reserved for a launcher design and construction laboratory. The question that remains open is: Would you be interested in joining forces?

RKT: It will be a pleasure to accompany you at the inauguration of the Laboratory.

HE: Finally: Share some numbers with us: How expensive is this activity? And how do you generate the budget?

RKT: Space development is very expensive, and it is directly related to the size of the launcher that the mission requires. Given the characteristics and scope of RKT, we require a long time to manufacture a rocket, especially with a liquid or hybrid engine. The use of materials and devices makes it a development where it is essential to invest a lot of capital, normally the devices used in its manufacture are not available in the common market, it requires special valves, connections, gaskets, pipes, servomotors, for specific use. space. The cost of fuel alone for a suborbital flight can be around $200,000 pesos with the dollar at 20 pesos.

PEGASUS P-400T: OAXACA AEROSPACE, A PRIDE OF MEXICO FOR THE WORLD.
September 24, 2021 Luis Alvarez
By: LuisAG

Cradle of cultural tradition and development, Oaxaca is witness to the birth of what we can now call a true national pride made by Mexican hands.

With a unique and totally original design, the Pegasus P-400T is an aircraft for military use with many advantages that make it even more unique, among them notable fuel savings, economical maintenance and a cost per unit that is 70% lower. that of any other equipment produced worldwide, which is 3 million dollars per unit P-400T, while other aircraft produced can be around 11 million dollars.

The Pegasus P-400T can reach a maximum speed of 500 Km/hr, (270 Ktas) (with power assist) and a range of 5 hours with a service ceiling of 24,000 ft.

Oaxaca Aerospace is the company responsible for the manufacture and sale of aircraft for military use, in charge of the P-400T project that seeks to be mass produced by 2022.

After 5 decades of aircraft manufacturing absence in Mexico, Oaxaca Aerospace is a symbol of the talent, professionalism and creativity that exists in Mexico, we are very sure that very soon it will be an internationally recognized company and it will be the one that will put the name of Mexico very up high and we will be there to communicate it, at La Voz Aviación we recognize the efforts of all the staff who work hard for the development of technologies in our country, in good time. Congratulations and much success!

The causes are different, to understand it you will need to read history.

The USA and Latin America are the same civilization, however the USA is the leader in the Americas followed by Brazil and Mexico.

Racially the British and the Spanish are very very close, and when they went to America the developed similar type of colonies.

However the USA have the largest population, followed by Brazil and Mexico

Now when it comes population, India has 2 1/3 the population of the whole latin america.

we are only 600 million people divided in more than 15 countries.

Now Brazil is a world leader because it has a population of 200 million, most nations in Latin America are in the range of 30 million people.

Brazil can made world leaders aircraft like E-190 or KC-390

Mexico has 130 million people.

we build fuselages for companies like Cessna, Bombardier, Gulfstream or jet engine parts for Rolls Royce or Pratt and whitney

here we have Bombardier Fuselages built in Queretaro Mexico

Kaman Helicopters builds also parts in Mexico.

Argentina has barely 44 million people but they build relatively small but advanced projects like

Cicare or Pampa IA-63
CH-14 helicopter built and designed in Argentina

Ch-12 helicopter built and designed in Argentina

Venezuela also builds small aircraft like AVLAT

Despite being so successful in commercial aircraft production, I have never heard of Embraer in the space applications business. Does Embraer have a space arm?

I do not think so, the space program was managed by other companies

In 1978, the National Commission for Space Studies (CNES), the French space agency, presented, at the request of the Brazilian government, a proposal for the development of a launch vehicle and three satellites. This proposal, after studies, was considered to have a very high cost, not to mention the fact that most of the developments would be carried out in French industries. Thus, in November 1979, during the 2nd Seminar on Space Activities, held under the auspices of the Brazilian Space Activities Commission, the National Institute for Space Research (INPE) and the former Institute for Space Activities (CTA/IAE), presented in together an alternative proposal that came to be known as the Complete Brazilian Space Mission (MECB).

Under the terms of the MECB, the CTA/IAE was responsible for developing the launch vehicle (which would become the VLS-1) and the launch infrastructure (which resulted in the Alcântara Launch Center), while INPE was responsible for the development of two satellites for collecting environmental data and two for remote sensing.

Although much is speculated about the model that would have given rise to the forms of the current Brazilian satellite launch vehicle, the fact is that, according to a statement by the first project manager, Eng. Jayme Boscov, the VLS-1 was the result of the technical-scientific training stage and the possibilities of the national industrial park at the time.

Fifteen designs were analyzed in all, reaching the end of the “cluster” configuration, with four thrusters geometrically distributed around a central body, by the way an internationally recognized configuration, still used today in operational launchers such as the Ariane V, the Proton SL, Long March 2E and Delta II.

The Alcântara accident was the saddest episode of the Brazilian Space Program. It took place on August 22, 2003, three days before the third launch of the VLS-1 rocket, which would put two Brazilian satellites into orbit, SATEC, developed by INPE, and UNOSAT, from Universidade Norte do Paraná.

Since its inception in 2004 and subsequent journey through the aeronautical industry, Frisa Aerospace has faced turbulence, however, with planning, training, alliances and investments, it acquired such knowledge and experience that today it sells directly to the Boeing and Airbus companies.

In addition, attracted by the growth of the aerospace industry, it decided to enter that market, supplying components to Elon Musk's company SpaceX, said Eduardo Garza T Junco, president of Frisa.

"Our main market is turbines, our clients are turbine owners, however, we are already selling directly to Boeing and Airbus, and we are already delivering the product to SpaceX, something not very helicopter-like and something also not very military," he said in his presentation at the closing of the Aerospace Manufacturing Congress.

In a subsequent interview, Garza T Junco stated: "Because the aerospace industry is growing so much, and requires certain similar certifications and similar knowledge (to that of aviation), there was a strategy to get into aerospace and we achieved it with SpaceX."

The director ruled out that they are going to build a new plant to attend to matters related to aerospace, since with the current facilities they will be able to meet what the new business demands.

Due to the pandemic, Frisa Aerospace's sales plummeted by almost half, and in 2022 they will not yet reach the level of 2019, but in 2023 revenues will be 25 percent higher, Garza T Junco estimated.

"After three years of the difficult pandemic in the aeronautical industry, right now we are seeing positive prospects, we have already invested again," he said.

The director said that they do not expect an increase in the number of clients; however, the volume of products requested from Frisa Aerospace will be greater than what they currently produce.

Frisa Aerospace, with a workforce of more than 600 employees, offers light and resistant forgings for the aerospace and power generation industries.
