The Covid-19 pandemic revealed the dependence on Asian manufacturing, so today there is a clear trend among companies towards nearshoring and diversification of operations, which poses new challenges for the Mexican aerospace industry.

For Edgar Ciceño, Safran's strategy director in Mexico, the proximity of the components to large companies gives them certainty of the continuity of their operation, so nearshoring brings a new opportunity to the country that was not expected two years ago. "Every year, in these three years, we have seen a small revolution and now we are seeing a major one with the supply chain."

Meanwhile, Luis Lizcano, executive president of the Mexican Federation of the Aerospace Industry (Femia), explained that this restructuring by the companies is accompanied by another factor that they take into consideration to sustain their operation: the demographic dividend, having available personnel to achieve your goals.

Given these factors and to respond to the dynamism of the reactivation of the aerospace sector, Femia carried out a reengineering of the Supplier Development Program, through which a diagnostic tool was developed (which will be available online) that will show what are the the areas of opportunity for companies interested in joining the supply chain, to subsequently provide support. This despite the fact that there is a broad industrial base, primarily in the automotive sector, which has state-of-the-art technology and the processes are similar, the way of doing business is different.

Aerospace is all about high-mix, low-volume, and the way you manage production, quality, and sourcing of raw materials differs from other industries.

On the demand side, Femia is identifying the companies that really have an intention and interest in developing the supplier network in Mexico.

“We are bringing them closer to potential suppliers in different regions of the country,” he reported.

As part of this strategic reconfiguration, the federation carries out this exercise with one or two buyers, instead of doing it with a large number at the same time, to maintain approaches with the companies that have the greatest possibilities according to the profile requested by the company. .



Increased demand for aerospace supply
Prior to the pandemic, the Femia had detected an opportunity of 5,000 million dollars to substitute imports; however, currently, with this exercise, between two companies the requirements amount to 7,000 million dollars. Buyers are looking for everything from precision machining, sheet metal assemblies, composite materials, plastic injection, plastics in general, forging and casting.

“The requirements are not ‘give me a part number,' but the work packages are made up of many or several part numbers that are assigned with smaller volumes,” she explained.

Supplier development is a long process, even up to three years for companies.

According to Ricardo Capilla, CEO of Airbus Mexico, in the next 20 years it is estimated that 39,000 to 40,000 aircraft will be required globally, which will require a production of 2,000 aircraft per year.

For Verónica Méndez, president of the Querétaro Aerocluster, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will have a fundamental role in the development of the components that the industry will demand, so it is necessary to explore how to promote and encourage them, because although it is clear the goal, we need the how.

For this, Mexico requires the design of an industrial policy for the aerospace sector, assured Lizcano, which supports SMEs to integrate into the supply chains of the commercial and defense sectors, and benefit from industrial compensation programs.

For example, in the defense sector, the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) is clear about the role it has to play in the development of this industry in Mexico. “It is so clear that since 2015 it has developed the Mexico Aerospace Fair. There has been an important impulse to look for suppliers to the demands that they have”, said Lizcano. However, there are aspects in which there is no availability in Mexico.

Although there is an avid need of the industrial sector to reactivate the entire economy, the uncertainty of an economic recession, an energy crisis and inflation that is not over yet prevails.
