TUI, one of the world's leading tourism groups, has selected the Embraer E195-E2 to integrate its fleet in Belgium. TUI will receive three AerCap E195-E2 jets under a long-term lease. The aircraft, powered by Pratt & Whitney GTF engines, will be delivered in a 136-seat single-class configuration in the first half of 2023.

The E195-E2 is the quietest and most efficient aircraft in its class, with up to 150 seats. “We are delighted to add the E195-E2 to our fleet in Belgium. The aircraft is the most efficient on the market on short and medium-haul routes, using less fuel and emitting less CO2, with a longer range.

In addition, the E2 is 50% quieter compared to other aircraft in its category. The aircraft will have their hub in Antwerp, from where they will fly to more distant airports, opening up new possibilities of destinations for our passengers”, said Marco Ciomperlik, CAO (Chief Airline Officer) of the TUI Group.

“The choice of the E195-E2 is an important milestone for TUI. It is another step towards making the company's fleet even more efficient and achieving our sustainability goals. Working together with AerCap, Embraer and Pratt & Whitney, we have an attractive set of services that allows TUI to offer travelers from Belgium an even better start to their travels from regional airports,” added Tom Chandler, Managing Director of Fleet and Asset Management of the TUI Group.

“We are delighted to announce the operation of three E195-E2s with TUI. AerCap has a long-standing relationship with the airline and we are excited to be a part of the fleet renewal plan,” said Peter Anderson, Commercial Director at AerCap. “The E195-E2s are perfect aircraft to support TUI's operations as they offer more versatility, efficiency and sustainability in operations.

EL HALCON 2, A PROJECT THAT "OPENED THE OYSTER" BASED ON FOOLISHNESS
Guanajuato AFAC Horizontec
Pablo Chavez Meza, envoy.

León, Gto., Oct 5.- For Mexico to be a power in the aeronautics industry, it must not only have aviation engineering, but also have an important supply network of goods for the sector, since most of them are imported. from United States.

For the engineer Gabriel Quesada Suárez, founder and general director of the Air flight school, the important thing is that the country develops a market for spare parts, manufacture of aviation instruments, assemblers, interior repair, among others.

He regretted that in Mexico there is no certification in this matter. For this reason, most of the components are imported from the United States, since -he said- "the Federal Civil Aviation Agency (AFAC) has fired the personnel who were dedicated to these certifications".

However, the first modern aircraft was built in the country, completely made with national components, known as the Halcón 2, and it was designed and manufactured by the company Horizontec. This aircraft has the function of serving as a school plane, for the training of future pilots.

This aircraft can also be used for recreational and security aviation, said Humberto Montaño, Operations Manager and head of the Design area of Horizontec; a plane like these is between 150,000 and 250,000 dollars, depending on the type of engine you want, he said.

The person in charge of the Design area commented that once the feedback from the flights is obtained, the engineering area will see the needs, the things to change to have a safe and easy-to-pilot aircraft for the user, while for them as company it is important that it is easy to assemble, cheap and does not cause long-term problems.

"El Halcón 2 is opening the oyster, with a lot of work, dedication and more than anything, a lot of foolishness, because the authorities are learning to certify," said Quesada Suárez.

Meanwhile, at the table called "how to apply the IoT -Internet of things- in the industry and not get lost along the way", Camilo Duque, professor at the Tecnológico de Monterrey, explained that the origin of the so-called Industry 4.0 came to change the production paradigms, where the concept of digitization was applied to the development of the different sectors.

“Among so many technological enablers, the key element is the digitization of processes and connectivity. They are requirements, because without this, everything else would result in "technological islands", he pointed out.

Embraer advances in the production of the first KC-390 Millennium for Hungary
Hungary is the second international customer of the KC-390 program · Deliveries are scheduled to start in 2024

A A A

Embraer continues to advance in the production of the first KC-390 Millennium aircraft for the Hungarian Defense Forces. In November 2020, the Hungarian government signed a contract with Embraer for the acquisition of two KC-390 aircraft in the process of strengthening the capabilities of the Hungarian Defense Forces.

Currently, Embraer is in the process of assembling the half wings on the aircraft's fuselage, with both structures already painted in the customer's colors. “We regularly follow the assembly of our first KC-390, and the production of the aircraft is significantly ahead of what was stipulated in the contract compared to the original plans, progressing better than planned,” said Colonel László Nagy, Head of Development of Air Force Systems, Planning Directorate of the Hungarian Defense Forces Command.
1666304617974.png

“We have also established a good relationship with the Brazilian Air Force, which gives us an opportunity for consultations that can be used extremely effectively by our teams in Hungary.” Flight testing of the first aircraft will begin in the second half of 2023, with delivery taking place in the second quarter of 2024. The second unit of the KC-390 aircraft for Hungary, whose start of production is scheduled for December 2022, thus maintaining the original schedule, is expected to be delivered by the end of 2024.

The Hungarian Defense Forces KC-390 will be the first in the world with an Intensive Care Unit in its configuration, an essential resource for the performance of humanitarian missions. The KC-390 is fully compatible with NATO operations, not only in terms of hardware, but also in its avionics and communications configuration. In addition, the KC-390's probe and basket refueling system allows the aircraft to refuel the Hungarian JAS 39 Gripen, as well as other aircraft using the same technology.

The aircraft also fully meets the requirements of the Hungarian Defense Forces, being capable of carrying out different types of civil and military missions, including aeromedical evacuation, cargo and troop transport, precision cargo delivery, paratrooper operations and aerial refueling.

SÃO PAULO As of this Monday (19DEC2022), Brazil will start operating the most modern fighters in Latin America with the entry into operation of four units of the Swedish Saab Gripen E, which will be presented at the headquarters of the Air Defense Group of Annapolis (GO).

As the location suggests, they will serve to provide interception capability for intruding aircraft in the heart of power, Brasilia, a mere 150 km from the base known as Ala 2 of the FAB (Brazilian Air Force). Today, the work is done by tired American F-5s, bought in the 1970s and modernized by Embraer.

“The start of operations is a milestone, as it provides the FAB with a state-of-the-art multi-mission platform”, says Air Force Commander Brigadier Carlos de Almeida Baptista Junior.

He had already accelerated the missile acquisition process to give teeth to the fighters, in this case the European Iris-T (short range) and Meteor (beyond the pilot's visual field).

With this, Brazil begins to dominate air capabilities in the region. Chile operates very capable versions of the American F-16 and Venezuela, the feared Russian Sukhoi-30 models, although in this case there are doubts about the availability of weapons.

The Gripen, although a small single-engine aircraft, is seen as at the top of the so-called fourth generation of fighters - the fifth being radar-stealth models, like the American F-35. Gripen was purchased in its third generation, the E/F.

It cost 39.3 billion Swedish crowns (R$ 20 billion at today's exchange rate) in 2014.

The amount was financed over 25 years, despite disbursement stages to be deducted from almost R$ 1 billion annually.

Brazil acquired a complete package, with planes and technology transfer, in addition to all the ground support paraphernalia —two flight simulators, a station that emulates all the plane's systems, tools and computers. Around 20 pilots and 20 technicians have already been trained at the base.

The four units arriving this Monday demonstrate the risks of such a long-term undertaking. In the FAB's revised schedule, there would be six operational aircraft this year, in addition to the fighter registration number 4100, which arrived in 2020 and continues as a test model that guaranteed the so-called Military Type Certificate of the Brazilian and Swedish Air Force.

“We had a slight discrepancy, but we always work in harmony with the customer”, relativized Mikael Franzén, head of aeronautical marketing and sales at Saab, the maker of the Gripen. He says that the deadline for delivery of the initial 36 planes is maintained for 2027, and that two new fighters will land at the beginning of the year.

It is a peculiarity of Brazilian military programs.

Mexico plays a key role in the restructuring of supply chains in the aerospace industry. The Covid-19 pandemic revealed the dependence on Asian manufacturing, so today there is a clear trend among companies towards nearshoring and diversification of operations, which poses new challenges for the Mexican aerospace industry.

For Edgar Ciceño, Safran's strategy director in Mexico, the proximity of the components to large companies gives them certainty of the continuity of their operation, so nearshoring brings a new opportunity to the country that was not expected two years ago. "Every year, in these three years, we have seen a small revolution and now we are seeing a major one with the supply chain."

Meanwhile, Luis Lizcano, executive president of the Mexican Federation of the Aerospace Industry (Femia), explained that this restructuring by the companies is accompanied by another factor that they take into consideration to sustain their operation: the demographic dividend, having available personnel to achieve your goals.

Given these factors and to respond to the dynamism of the reactivation of the aerospace sector, Femia carried out a reengineering of the Supplier Development Program, through which a diagnostic tool was developed (which will be available online) that will show what are the the areas of opportunity for companies interested in joining the supply chain, to subsequently provide support. Lizcano estimated that the results of the first diagnosis carried out in October will be ready in November of this year.

“There is an obvious interest from companies to diversify into the aerospace sector, however it is essential that they first learn about the aerospace business,” he said.

This despite the fact that there is a broad industrial base, primarily in the automotive sector, which has state-of-the-art technology and the processes are similar, the way of doing business is different.

Aerospace is all about high-mix, low-volume, and the way you manage production, quality, and sourcing of raw materials differs from other industries.

On the demand side, Femia is identifying the companies that really have an intention and interest in developing the supplier network in Mexico.

“We are bringing them closer to potential suppliers in different regions of the country,” he reported.

As part of this strategic reconfiguration, the federation carries out this exercise with one or two buyers, instead of doing it with a large number at the same time, to maintain approaches with the companies that have the greatest possibilities according to the profile requested by the company. .

Increased demand for aerospace supply
Prior to the pandemic, the Femia had detected an opportunity of 5,000 million dollars to substitute imports; however, currently, with this exercise, between two companies the requirements amount to 7,000 million dollars. Buyers are looking for everything from precision machining, sheet metal assemblies, composite materials, plastic injection, plastics in general, forging and casting.

“The requirements are not ‘give me a part number,' but the work packages are made up of many or several part numbers that are assigned with smaller volumes,” she explained.

Supplier development is a long process, even up to three years for companies.

According to Ricardo Capilla, CEO of Airbus Mexico, in the next 20 years it is estimated that 39,000 to 40,000 aircraft will be required globally, which will require a production of 2,000 aircraft per year.
1672189165916.png

For Verónica Méndez, president of the Querétaro Aerocluster, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) will have a fundamental role in the development of the components that the industry will demand, so it is necessary to explore how to promote and encourage them, because although it is clear the goal, we need the how.

For this, Mexico requires the design of an industrial policy for the aerospace sector, assured Lizcano, which supports SMEs to integrate into the supply chains of the commercial and defense sectors, and benefit from industrial compensation programs.

For example, in the defense sector, the National Defense Secretariat (Sedena) is clear about the role it has to play in the development of this industry in Mexico. “It is so clear that since 2015 it has developed the Mexico Aerospace Fair. There has been an important impulse to look for suppliers to the demands that they have”, said Lizcano. However, there are aspects in which there is no availability in Mexico.

So this policy must contain flexible financing schemes for the benefit of both.

In the case of other countries such as France, Capilla explained, the State becomes an "investment".

The Bajío Aerospace Cluster (Aerospace BJX) inaugurated its offices in Parque 100 located in the Tecnológico de Monterrey Campus León.

In addition, the members of the business body held the year-end board of directors in which they presented the main results of 2022, in addition to the approach to the strategies that they will carry out to consolidate and that have a direct and indirect impact in the medium and long term. at the state and national level.

The Halcón 2, an aircraft designed and assembled in Guanajuato with local and international suppliers, has become the icon of this industry in the entity, in addition, parts and components are produced for Boeing, Airbus, Bombardier and Gulfstream.

The main products exported are aircraft parts, turbojets, turboprops and gas turbines.

The companies that make up the Aerospace Cluster in Guanajuato are pioneers and visionaries, because they have known how to take advantage of opportunities and have integrated into high-level value chains.

Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) in the aerospace sector perceive a “challenging” 2023, in which there is a clear demand given the global economic recovery, but there is also a complex national and international scenario.

Although there is an avid need of the industrial sector to reactivate the entire economy, the uncertainty of an economic recession, an energy crisis and inflation that is not over yet prevails.

"It is going to be a year of many challenges in space and aviation issues, it is observed that there will be a lot of growth and high demand," said Jatziri Barrios, CEO of Specialists in Turboparts (ETU) Aerospace.

For more than a year, a large part of the world fleet remained on the ground without maintenance, which now causes the production and Maintenance, Overhaul and Overhaul (MRO) cycles to overlap, when previously the replacement cycle came first. production and then maintenance.

“Now you have MRO and manufacturing cycles that need to be reactivated, which will create a very challenging year,” he said.

For his part, Arturo Nava, general director of the Elastómeros de Querétaro plant, explained that there is a great possibility of demand and new projects, but there are also various restrictions, for example, in raw materials.

The foregoing, due to the waiting times for the receipt of raw materials, which are prolonged by factors of shortages, energy, among others, which come to stress the supply chain, added to other effects of inflation and cashflow.

However, he stressed that “there are projects, there is demand, there is work and we will have to find a way to 'surf' in order to achieve our objectives. The worst scenario is that there is no demand, we will find a way to solve all the other restrictions”.

In this regard, Jerónimo Sánchez, director of business development at Hyrsa Aerospace, agreed that they currently face long waiting times to receive the raw materials required for production, which makes delivery times difficult with customers.

During the pandemic, he explained, the production of the plants stopped, but the sale of stock continued, which means that currently it is produced to generate stocks, at the time of manufacturing to make deliveries, which generates a demand double.

In the aerospace industry, companies are an open book in which, in order to quote, they must show the costs of processes, labor, freight and even, sometimes, how much your profit is.

"Our competition is not just around the corner, it is not in San Luis Potosí, Chihuahua, Monterrey, but our competition is in Germany and Canada, so we have to keep up with it and be competitive, from the manufacturing to the financial and also governmental part”, concluded Sánchez.

Embraer will present the C-390 Millennium multi-mission aircraft at the Aero India 2023 event, in Bangalore, India, from February 13 to 17. In addition to the presence of the C-390 Millennium at the event, Embraer will promote at its stand (Hall B, B2.2 B) the comprehensive portfolio of innovative solutions developed by Embraer Defense & Security, which include the A-29 Super Tucano, the P600 AEW&C, radars and border surveillance solutions.

“We are proud to display the iconic C-390 Millennium in India for our guests to experience the true capabilities of this 21st century military multi-mission aircraft,” said Bosco da Costa Junior, President and CEO of Embraer Defense & Security. “India is a key market for Embraer and we want to establish partnerships that can further boost the country's industry and defense capabilities. Therefore, we seek at this event to increase interaction with India's aerospace and defense ecosystem.”

Since its entry into operation with the Brazilian Air Force (FAB) in 2019, the C-390 has proven its capacity, reliability and performance in several missions. FAB's fleet of five aircraft, all in the aerial refueling version, called the KC-390, has already accumulated more than 7,500 flight hours and recent numbers show a mission completion rate of 99%, demonstrating exceptional productivity in the category. The C-390 Millennium has orders from Portugal and Hungary, both NATO member countries. The Netherlands, also a member of NATO, selected the C-390 Millennium in 2022.
