Maybe the design is theirs while we built them.
Reverse is true. Design of last 2 is same as first 2.

But SAAB helped in building the superstructure using their composite construction expertise, allowing displacement to reduce from approx 3,200 tons to 2,500 tons. The first 2 Kamortas were grossly overweight.

Composite superstructure might have helped by reducing 100-200 tonnes max.

Nope. Akai Sukla in his article said using composites super structure helped reduce 200 tones. From 3200 to 3000 tonnes approx.

And by design I meant, the means to make the composite material and not the design of the super structure itself.

From the SAAB link:

"The P28 Kamorta class are 109-metres and 2,500-ton ASW corvettes, built by Indian Garden Reach Shipbuilding and Engineering (GRSE) in Kolkata. The Indian superstructures delivered by Saab almost equals the size of Visby-class corvettes."

Visby-class : 650 tons

If the total weight saving was only 100-200 tons max that would mean a miniscule ~5-6% reduction in overall displacement. I'm not sold on why we would choose to import a 650 ton superstructure for such small & insignificant improvement. If it was significant weight reduction (like ~25%) then it would make sense to seek foreign input.

They did not design the super structure. Most likely grse imported the composite materials required to make superstructure or required assistance on how to make the composite materials themselves. And as such weight loss gain would be minimal.

Can anyone confirm that Varunastra been equipped on Kamorta, please? Last time I checked, the source still says MU90 (OEM by Bharat Electronics). To a ship of this tonnage (over 2500), Varunastra should NOT only be optional but required (lead-ship in anti-sub missions).

We have reduced the weight of the superstructure by about 100 tonnes using this technology.

Kamorta class was envisioned to be a 2500 T standard displacement ship when initially designed. That is why the first line of the article you quoted says that the ship is 2500 tonnes.

@Gessler,

The envisaged weight of the corvettes as per the contract (June 2012) was 3170 tonnes. During construction of first two corvettes (3017 and 3018), DND observed the weight of the Corvettes increased significantly due to adoption of various signature reduction measures. In order to achieve the reduction in weight of the Corvettes, DND suggested (May 2009) that GRSE use composite super structure in lieu of the steel super structure on board three Corvettes out of the four whereby the weight could be reduced by 70 to 80 tonnes. Considering the long lead time for procurement of composite materials from foreign vendors, GRSE decided to use composite material only for the last two Corvettes. After inviting tenders from three firms3 nominated (May 2009) by IHQ (N), the orders were placed on ThyssenKrupp Marine Systems International Pte Limited (TKMSI) in September 2010 for the composite superstructure material and associated works for two Corvettes i.e., 3019 and 3020 at a cost of ` 123.65 crore. This additional cost for the composite superstructure was catered to in the contract which was signed in June 2012

Ya'll Nibbiasr Samsung Corruption won the bid's and also they provided line of credit.
Good for them, they won... & we're making excuses. Sad GRSE didn't try this themselves even after dealing with Indian and forced for so long. Pay the right guy. Keep seperate find for that! Tsk

What Line of credit?

Philippines team which visited GRSE found that GRSE will be unable to complete the order due to its poor financial standing.
It was never about Line if Credit.

Why Philippines team drew such conclusion is upto you to interpret.

If you are talking about line of credit by GoI/ financial institutions to GRSE then yes.

Otherwise it was Koreans' at play. Philippines got a raw deal when the Koreans' changed the western equipment with equivalent Korean equipment on those frigates.
It was quite a controversy in Philippines.

Ask @asianobserve .
