Jawans clash with officers in army camp in Leh

Tension gripped an army regiment here after a group of officers and jawans clashed following an incident of alleged molestation involving an orderly and the reported capturing of the armoury by the agitated soldiers.

The trigger for the clash took place late yesterday afternoon in Nyoma sub-district, located 150 kilometres from here, when a jawan allegedly misbehaved with the wife of a Major who beat him up, official sources said.

The officers and jawans of 226 Field Regiment were undergoing firing practice at this place.

The Major did not permit other jawans to allow any medical treatment for the 'sahayak' fuelling anger among the colleagues who objected, the sources said.

The news reached the Commanding Officer of the regiment who was camping in nearby police guest house. He immediately reached the scene and gauging the mood shouted at the Major for his reluctance to allow the injured 'sahayak' being taken for treatment.
Seeing this, the Major along with five of his officer colleagues beat the Commanding Officer, a Colonel, in front of jawans. This angered the jawans who then went berserk and beat the other officers with sticks, the sources said.

The Commanding Officer was immediately shifted to Leh hospital.Nearly 40 to 50 jawans then started a search for Major rank officers. Two were found in nearby camp and were beaten up, the sources said, adding they were rescued after an intervention by the local police.

Three Majors were still hiding and are believed to have moved towards Chashool army camp located on Sino-India border, the sources said. The 226-Field Regiment Unit has been cordoned and senior officers of Leh-based 14 Corps have rushed to the scene, they said.

Tempers cooled down this afternoon when General Officer- -in-Command of Third Infantry division assured the jawans, who had captured the armoury, that action will be taken against the erring officers, the sources said.

The sources said though the jawans had armoury under their control, no withdrawal of weapons has been resorted to.

Superintendent of Police (Leh) Vivek Gupta was camping in Nyoma along with heavy reinforcements following a report by the Sub-Divisional Magistrate that army jawans, armed with sticks and knives, were holding protest, the sources said.

Commenting on the situation, the Army Headquarters in Delhi said "due to some administrative reasons, there was a scuffle in an artillery unit during field firing.
"The incident is under investigation and necessary action will be taken."

Minor incident. But I am sure that Firstpost is intelligent enough to make it a national news.

Shocking - What happened at Nyoma

What happened at Nyoma

In news that broke early this morning on Headlines Today, there was a violent fist-fight involving Indian Army officers and soldiers of the 226 Field Regiment deployed at Nyoma, Ladakh very close to the border with China-administered Tibet.

Now the events are still unofficial, so there may be corrections, but as I understand it, here's what happened:

The incident took place late last evening during a field firing exercise by the regiment at the Mahe Field Firing Range just west of Nyoma. It is understood that a Major-rank officer had his wife with him at the range or base. Sources say a jawan or orderly "misbehaved" with either the Major or his wife (as I said, the details are sketchy), and the Major responded by beating up the jawan so severely that he needed medical attention. When the Major, in a furious temper at this time, physically stopped soldiers from transferring the injured jawan to the infirmary back at the barracks, they responded by attacking the officers. The unit's Commanding Officer, Colonel P. Kadam, who wasn't at the spot, rushed in when he heard about the brawl. Sources say he entered the scene, and was quickly briefed on the sidelines about what had happened. The CO then proceeded to berate the Major or Majors for trying to stop the jawans from getting their injured colleague treated for his injuries. It was at this moment that the Major or Majors allegedly snapped again, and turned their attention on their Commanding Officer, beating him up. Colonel Kadam, who is understood to have sustained injuries to his face and neck, is at the base hospital in Nyoma along with a certain number of jawans and other officers. But things didn't end there. The jawans are understood to have destroyed certain amounts of property -- allegedly setting fire to some parts of the buildings on the base.

3 Division commander Maj Gen A.L. Chavan arrived at the spot early this morning. The Army has released a statement saying there was a "minor scuffle between officers and troops of a unit on 10/11 May 2012 in Ladakh region. The situation is under control."

Sources say Commanding Officer Colonel P. Kadam, currently recuperating from his injuries, is a Silver Gunner from the 1st Gunnery Course, "intelligent and sharp". Originally from Belapur, Thane in Maharashtra, Col Kadam served in 21 Rashtriya Rifles in Sopore during the Kargil War, after which he returned to his parent unit, the 226 Medium Regiment, a unit with an apparently chequered history as far as jawan-officer relations are concerned.

What happened last night at Nyoma is perhaps the most troubling incident in the Indian Army in a very long time -- and we all know what a year it's been. I'll be updating this post.

A most extraordinary incident.

Orderly or sahayak do not accompany their officers to Field Firing Ranges and so that input is maliciously mischievous.

The unit will be disbanded - the ultimately shame that can come upon soldiers and the officers of that unit. They will also be marked for life!

One of the reasons is that because of burning ambition, too many sinecure duties, too many courses, officers are most of the time out of the unit and have very little interaction with their men. Hence, the bonding is low.

That is also the reason for suicides and fragging.

It was unheard of in the earlier times when life was worse when combating terrorism was something that was being learnt by trial and error; and error leading to loss of life was more. Unlike today, when the procedures are all taped up and working and living conditions much better.

It is all about bonding. And no matter how many fancy committees are set up with psychiatric and other analyses being done and flaunted as the Holy Grail, the answer still remains that there is low bonding!

i dont understand y these officers take their wives on FWD post..
It is being done these days to bring the stress of living apart down.

It is applicable for all ranks.

This is the school summer holidays time and so they are allowed for this period.

The Army is becoming chocolate cream soldiering!

This is another stupid thing.

Police to control the Army if they run amok?

Another great joke!

There are reserve battalion of the Army which can be deployed for control.

Is this for real? There will be serious court martial for mutiny?

Wow, a CO of the rank of a Colonel gets beaten up by a few Majors, who gang up to take on one man. Wow, what is happening in the IA?!

This incidence is as shameful and as shocking as it can get.

Minor incident. But I am sure that Firstpost is intelligent enough to make it a national news.
Mate, minor incident?! Thankfully its an isolated incident, else we should be very worried about our borders.

Defence Ministry seeks detailed report from the Army on the Nyoma incident, say Defence Ministry officials.

The Nyoma incidence has shocked me. Very disgraceful incident. There should be Court Martials of all guilty starting from Officers first!

All court martials are serious ;)

And that there will be courts martial is axiomatic.

The unit will get disbanded. And that is worse.

Best part is that none will feel sorry for that such a stupid unit got disbanded.

A blot on the history of the Regt of Arty.

Sad.

Time to quit this egalitarianism that has seeped into the Army for long as also political influence.

This is not a minor incident at all.

The Defence Ministry is the root cause of all these type of problems.

They protect the corrupt and ruin the image of the officer class and so you will have this type of insubordination.

What report do they want?

This cannot be handled in a perfunctory manner.

The malaise is deep and it requires great introspection.
