Both are the same 2001 prototype.

The engine is the same. The first picture with the black nozzle would be the AL-31F or 117s without the flexible petals while the second picture has flexible petals. I guess that's about it.

The yellow little thing in front of the cockpit could be a panel for an accelerometer or some other equipment. The black skin would be removed to get to the electronics. The yellow colour is the composites beneath the skin. Let's just say the J-20 is one step ahead of the T-50 when it comes to the stealthy outer skin.

Judging by the newest pictures J20 is max 20-21m long, this means it is at most 1 meter longer than PAK-FA, and likely shorter than Su27/30/J11. It is hardly surprising as it uses same lines of engines(AL31/WS10) destined for the latter.

All those J20 against who type analysis needs to be thrown out because this is not what China thinks when designing this aircraft. J20 is just one of many new systems coming out from China these days that are meant to bridge the technological gap between China and the more advanced nations like US, Europe and also Russia. China is not designing this aircraft to count any any specific air crafts or any specific air force out there. Rather it is the logical development for a nation that has come long way in building up the economy and its technological prowess.

J-20 is just the tip of a "huge" iceberg. It is part of a comprehensive and ultra-modern system and a small but important start. Lots of goodies, whether land-based, sea-going, air-borne or space-ferrying, are coming out in the next few years. Expect to see pictures as they come out. You lot won't have to wait for long.

What are the answers? 2 J-20s in existence? Chinese engines? Russian engines?
