Developing a new one is much better than turning a 2 engines jet to a single engine one.

Twin engines is required for naval plane. J-31/35 will be Navy funded. PLAAF will take about if they find use for a smaller twin engine as opposed to the heavy ones they operate now with J-16 and J-20. But if the air force wants a single engine to replace the J-10 in the future, it will be a new plane based on the WS-15.

PLAN is looking for twin-engine carrier planes. Single-engine for land-based PLAN units (PLAN has J-10s.)

China thinks that giving angle to nosecone and fuselage makes 5th generation plane. Nothing is fifth generation in Chinese plane. No engine, no radar, no EW, No weapon. Yet, Chinese plane is fifth generation.

Maybe it's a fan art but you will see a single engine stealth fighter coming out from China in the next 5 years, its too good of an opportunity to pass on. A ws15 based se 5th gen fighter in inevitable.

again. this is the AVIC's (601+112 team) export project ’FC-31' -the 3rd prototype (PT 31003),not any member of a national project. ..at this moment, the true prototype of new 'J-XX project' hasn't been revealed yet...it will be a little different ,and again , it will emerges as the 'shipboard fighter'...

'so called recent photo' actually was the one recently revealed not taken... that northern city has fewer Airplane photography enthusiasts with worse shooting conditions and strict info control. we saw it long time ago in a small group but no one 'dare' to reveal it on the internet.
