@Kunal Biswas Why do we not use drum mags for INSAS LMG? I have a drum mag design of 100 rounds that is half the size of a 100 round C-Mag which takes 30 sec to load up.

INSAS is very strictly as per GSQR, So you see everything on INSAS as per GSQR, In IA LMG was always meant for Magazine where as need for GPMG only came after Kargil War, Where 30rnd mag was found insufficient for continues suppressive fire..

May be if someone make a new GSQR keeping suppressive fire in mind may think of it..

Isn't this too bulky to be used by infantry?
each soldier carry 100 bullet and INSAS, so this is not much weight. Plus 30 round magazine means only 5 magazine and this single drum will do the trick.

Imagine walking 20 miles on patrol with a 4kg (?) INSAS with a 2kg 150 round drum mag attached to it...

Anyway, would we need loaders at base?

para commandos run 40 km with 40 kg weight every day. So squad of 11 people two guys have INSAS LMG wont be much.

X-15 50 round drum magazine

Its shorter in length compare to a 30rnd Mag of AR-15 / INSAS LMG,

Size of the Magazine and Weight are primary concern, A solution balanced between these two factor may be a good choice..

Should also mention the review was on older INSAS 1B1 back 2010..
What is the difference between that and the new one. Other than the fact it's black?

Do you have any article, etc. detailing the differences?

The build looks the same. Only difference is the coloring.

I have mentioned this when i posted these photos..

Its in the thread few pages back..

=============================

The topic was discussed before >>

INSAS 1B1 at Range.. :cool2:

1B1 advantage over 1B :

1. Better metallurgy than 1B which helps reduce the weight..
2. Black fiber body..
3. Rifle Quality improved..
4. Sound reduction..

What is the difference between that and the new one. Other than the fact it's black?

How did they reduce the sound? What design changes reduced the overall sound of the rifle?

Already dicussed on Page 4 ..

Though will add to erase confusion :

1B ( Field classification non official ) = 1B ( Official classification ) = 1B
Improved 1B ( Field classification non official ) = 1B1 ( Official classification ) = Older 1B1
Improved 1B1 ( Field classification non official ) = 1B1 ( Official classification ) = improved 1B1

This is 1B1 :

------------------
------------------

This is improved 1B :

----------------------
----------------------

Original 1B ( 1999 ) :

-----------------------
-----------------------

After new Rifle ( black ), older one is known as Improved 1B not 1B1..

The only change between 1B to Improve 1B is OFB rail for optics rest is same so it cannot given same designation as 1B1..

Where as 1B1 ( Black ) has different metallurgy, Improved quality, Black furniture, Reduced weight, Increase reliability, etc etc, Many modifications..

What is 1B?

These are all manufacturer stamped/classified 1B1.
