Soviet carrier philosophy in late 80s:
Naval Mig-29 : To be a multirole fighter, doing most of the anti-shipping and anti-land operations
Naval Su-27: To provide air-superiority. Less payload, optimized in air-air role.

Interestingly both fighter were meant to operated together from Kuznetsov and its follow-on carriers.

However, after dissolution of Soviet Union they ran out of funds and concentrated only on Naval Su-27. By the late 90s, the Mig Corporation was financially bankrupt, while Sukhoi Corporation was handed a financial lifeline by the IAF through the local massive Su-30 mki order. However by 2010, it was clear to Russian MOD that though Su-27 was a great platform as a airforce fighter plane, it was not suitable for carrier operations.

Luckily for Russsian Navy, the backup solution was at hand. Indian Navy has sponsored the developement of Mig-29K platform. So RN is now ordering Mig-29K as well.
Couldn't have explained it better in my life 👌

And the 2nd last sentence is reason why I said we should simply get few augmenting squadrons Mig-35 as stopgap till MWF-AMCA, instead of MMRCA+MRCBF. We already spent Indian taxpayer money on developing its basis Mig-29K & IAF will operate 62+21+41 of these till 2045.

We Sponsored the development of Mig-29k ?? Is that mean we paid money for development of Mig-29k and ordered jets even before it come to existence??
Yes. In 2004-05 when Gorskov was chosen, the Russian presented both the options Su-33 and Mig-29k. However, the Mig proposal was not the first choice of the Russians, and apart from the few initial prototypes (from late 80s) the Mig-29k project was in cold storage aand could be completed with funding from outside. So IN chose to fund this project.

Or Indian project ke liye inki Amma marti hai... Neither they agree to fund any project nor they give concession in trials. Moreover, they try to sabotage Indian programs day and night.
Such a shameless people Still they do Randi rona for delays. Our Armed forces deserve worse than our PSUs are providing.

As per then news report, MIG 29K was chosen since Vikki could accommodate more of them. Note that in early 2000s, we could not get access to US weaponry so the idea of pitching F-18 was unheard of. Neither French had something, their Super Etendard was already a relic by that time and was on verge on retirement. RAFALE M was still in initial testing phase. So the idea of funding MIG 29K was a logical step, now the fact plane performance is not as per our expectations that is another thing.
In any case MIG MAPO is on its death bed and sadly no one is going for their planes now. I doubt even if they have something post MIG 35.

Wingspan of Mig-29K is about 11 m, which will come down to 7 m when folded. So it can easily fit in IAC-1 lifts. Total length is about 17.3 m. (https://military.wikia.org/wiki/Mikoyan_MiG-29K)
What is suprising is that Wingspan of Su-33 is about 14.7 m, which will also come down to 7.4 m when folded. Total length is about 21.94 m. (https://military.wikia.org/wiki/Sukhoi_Su-33_Sea_Flanker)

So yes, be rest assured Mig-29k will fit in IAC-1 lifts, which may even tightly accomodate Su-33 (from first glance of the picture of the lifts, though not sure about the length).
