Captain appointed for the IAC-1, efforts on to put it in water by 2021


For projecting the country’s sea-borne airpower requirements, work on Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC)-1 is moving at a fast pace and it will be going in for basin trials in the next couple of months. This will be followed by a series of sea trials before it gets commissioned in the Indian Navy.

A top Indian Navy officer speaking on condition of anonymity explained that “the IAC-1 which is under construction will enter the waters like a ship in 2021 before it gets inducted in the navy as an aircraft carrier. The efforts are going on in the right direction. The first batch of the crew is ready and the second and the third batch of the crew have been identified and awaiting final orders.”


“The most important thing is that the name of the Capt has been cleared and that means that everything is on track now,” the officer quoted above said.

The Indigenous Aircraft Carrier (IAC), under construction at Cochin Shipyard, Kochi is already running behind schedule. “The major challenge for the shipyard and the Indian Navy is to make sure that the ship meets all the milestones as planned and to put her out to sea for trials as per the revised plans.”

What is Basin Trial?

It involves the testing of machinery and equipment on board the ship in floating conditions before it goes in for sea trials.

The flight trials for the IAC-1 are going to start only when the IAC-1 which is named INS Vikrant is delivered to the Indian Navy. Before the flight trials the aviation facility complex and making the ships ready for flight trials.

In December Naval Chief Admiral Karmbir Singh had said that all issues related to ship build issues were all addressed and soon the trials would start and that the Indian Navy will take the delivery by February-March 2021.” Adding “the IAC-1 Vikrant will be fully operational by 2022.”

Indigenous Steel used in the IAC-1

The steel used in the building of the aircraft carrier has been specially developed after extensive research and collaboration between Defence Research and Development Organisation (DRDO) and Steel Authority of India Ltd (SAIL) and the navy’s Directorate of Naval Design.

This is special military-grade steel created for the indigenously designed for the IAC-1 and the submarines for the Indian Navy. According to officials, it is sturdier than the ordinary type and has the capability of being used in temperatures as low as minus (-) 40°C. It is not breakable and can be bent to suit the requirements of the design.

Chinese naval vessels are all have many problems ,need a long time to maintenance , and they are fake , made up by toy plastic, do not worry about it.

India will surpass Chinese navy within 5 years.

India will have at least 10 aircraft carriers before 2030.
The rest are a welcome comment from a chinese except the last line, no thanks you can keep 10 to 100 aircraft carriers yourself for a PLAN

look at all the mess it is still not completely ready yet it was launched in 2013 and in 2018 we heard about it god knows what happened in those 5 yrs.
Keel was laid down in Feb 2009, floated out of dry dock in Dec 2011, launched in Aug 2013.
Sea trials to commence in April 2020.
That is a good 11 years to build a 40,000 ton basic STOBAR aircraft carrier.
Add another 1 year for the ship to be delivered to the Navy.
12 freakin years to build a basic ski jump carrier, had the project been awarded to L&T, the ship would have commenced operations in 2015-16 itself.

why refitting took such a huge time it would have commissioned in 2018

3300 tons Corvettes take 8 years to commission
7500 tons Destroyers take 9 years
45,000 tons Carriers take 12 years..

While China is doing 55,000 tons Carriers in 5-6 years and 12000 tons Destroyers in 4-5 years.

Fun fact : I was discussing job life with a friend and her father works in MDL. She's like " Unka life kitna chill hain yaar, kabhi bhi office jaate hain, kabhi bhi wapas aa jate hain, no pressure"

Talking about MDL, i remember after the revision of the timelines for the Kalvari subs, we were promised all 6 subs to be ready by 2021. We are about to enter financial year 2020-21 and only 2 subs are active..

L&T doesn't have the capability to build such a large project.
If L&T is given access to infrastructure to build such large ships, they can build them in double quick time.
Also do not forget that L&T played a major part in construction of our biggest drydock which can accommodate our aircraft carriers.
Thank god that the hull of Arihant class subs are fabricated by L&T and not by MDL,GRSE,Kochi shipyards.

It was foolish to allow MDL contract to build all 4 P15b destroyers, the keel of the first ship was laid down in 2013 but the ship is still a good year away from commissioning.
Hopefully, the new construction methods adopted to construct the P17A frigates will significantly reduce timelines.
But then again the ships are being built in public shipyards, so fingers crossed.

Why would any dockyard give access to L&T, they would want the project for themselves. L&T might have a good work culture and project management but they can't amount to anything without proper infrastructure and facility.

Lead ships of any class take time,the follow on ships in same class cut the time period.Look at nimitz class construction,1st one took 7 years(and usa has experience of building big carriers) ,comparre this to 8th ship of this class truman,it took only 5 years.

China is also building ships in bulk,& india must also do the same ,time period for vishal can be reduced if construction starts ASAP,dont let the berth sit ideal.

No need for INS Vishal as of now, operating a 3rd aircraft carrier is an expensive proposition.
A CATOBAR INS Vishal is going to end up costing $15-20 bn.
For the same money, one can get 12 additional Scorpene subs, 6 additional P15B destroyers, 3 additional P17A frigates, 10 additional Kamorta class corvettes, 24 minesweepers.
