Well, it appears PM Modi is pushing all the right buttons stressing for indigenous and home grown weaponry. Wish he backs his statements with timely deeds.

No MiG show on INS Vikramaditya, PMO asks why - Hindustan Times

The Prime Minister's Office is likely to ask the Navy why the MiG-29K fighter aircraft could not operate from the deck of INS Vikramaditya during PM Narendra Modi's visit on Saturday, a senior government official told HT.

The Navy had to abort plans to showcase take-off and landing of the fighters on the Russian-made aircraft carrier due to turbulent sea conditions.

The swell was 3.5-metres high due to a cyclonic storm in the Arabian Sea and the fo'c'sle (forward part of a ship) of warships accompanying the carrier could be seen bobbing up and down several feet, a senior Navy officer said. Authorising MiG-29K manoeuvres in the prevailing conditions would have amounted to violation of standard operating procedures, he said.

The PMO on Saturday had said Modi witnessed a "three-hour long breathtaking display of naval capabilities" onboard the 44,500-tonne warship amid heavy rain. The government official said the PMO wanted to know the exact nature of difficulty faced by the navy in operating the ship-borne fighters from the deck.

The PMO was also not too happy with "pudgy and rotund" personnel, including some officers, onboard, he added.

The Navy officer said some of the personnel needed to emulate Navy chief Admiral Robin Dhowan, who is fitter than officers half his age. Modi and Dhowan had appeared to hit it off on the warship, with the navy chief explaining every manoeuvre to the PM.

Modi witnessed MiG-29K fighters performing two overshoots (touch-and-go missions) on the flight deck. Western Fleet commander Rear Admiral Anil Chawla was standing on the warship's bridge (the part of a vessel from where its movement is controlled) and personally overseeing every manoeuvre.

Navy pilots have carried out more than 100 take-offs and an equal number of landings on the $2.33-billion carrier in recent months.

The Navy could have overcome the sea conditions by diverting the course of the warship.

But it had no window to do so as the PM was on a tight schedule, said another senior officer.

"We did our best in the available time and sea conditions. Moreover, safety cannot be compromised when the PM is onboard," he stressed.

The officer added that the navy would have unquestionably pushed the envelope had the carrier been on an operational deployment, but safety couldn't be overlooked during a display for the PM. There was a possibility of launching fighters from the carrier, but recovering them with arrestor wires would have been highly risky due to the sea conditions.

Navy scouts for air defence options for INS Vikramaditya

The Indian Navy is carrying out feasibility studies and tests to scout for alternative air defence systems for its largest warship, the INS Vikramaditya, that is currently vulnerable to air attacks due to an inordinate delay in the Indo-Israel protection system that was to be installed two years ago.

The aircraft carrier, that demonstrated its capabilities to Prime Minister Narendra Modi last week, does not have any self defence weapons on board, barring a chaff and flare system. It does not even have a close in weapon system (CIWS) to shoot down incoming air attacks at very close range, making it the only battleship of its kind in the world to be virtually unarmed.

Senior Navy officers say the CIWS, an AK 630 system to be manufactured in India, is now likely to be installed between March and June next year when the aircraft carrier will go for its first refit at Karwar. The radar-guided gun and rocket system will provide basic protection to the 44,500-ton aircraft carrier.

The main protection to the ship — a prime enemy target in times of combat — will however be its point defence missile system (PDMS) that will take care of incoming missile as well as aircraft and drone attacks. However, the Long Range Surface to Air Missile (LRSAM) system — a joint collaboration between the Navy, Israel and DRDO — has been running behind time, forcing the Navy to look for options.

"Various studies are on to find what can be provided to the ship. We are looking at different systems that will meet our requirements," a senior Navy officer said. He added that the systems under consideration include the LRSAM in case it progresses satisfactorily or the Russian STIHL air defence system that had been on offer by Moscow for the past few years.

The top officer, who is directly involved in the project, also said the future Indo-French 'Maitri' Short Range Surface to Air Missiles (SR SAM) systems would also be under consideration for fitment on board the warship.

The officer however conceded any sort of missile defence system on the aircraft carrier would take at least three years to be installed, given that it can only be done once the ship is dry docked for its first major refit.

While officials say the carrier will not be vulnerable to air threats due to the mix of warships that will accompany it on all deployments, aircraft carriers across the world carry their own set of air defence systems as the last resort measure against incoming missiles and aircraft. Even INS Viraat has the Barack air defence missile systems as well as anti-aircraft guns for close-in defence.

INS Vikramaditya is operational but would be fully combat ready once more fighter pilots are trained for deck operations.

Was a piece of Junk, And was revived only due to Indian money and banging doors at Moscow their ship yard back then too was incompetent and these are not my words but Russian news papers back in Russia ;)

The deal was signed due to political and diplomatic reasons, The hull was not free but more expensive than the original hull itself and above all its life is limited even after entire sections of hull being replaced by new fabricated once, Check out Livefest documentary for this ..
@pmaitra, Russia can because they trust India as a reliable business partner, We don`t share secrets and we have lots of money to lease ..

==============

We should not care how good and cuddly Russian or US are, But what we get at what price and quality because its our money and our Sailors life's at stake ..
I prefer source of Admiral Premvir Das over livefest.

"The vessel, sold free but contracted at a cost of Rs 974 crore for its refit and modernisation (it had been lying unused for several years after the collapse of the Soviet economy), has suffered time and cost overruns, both due to underestimation of work and modifications needed by the Indian side."

..:: India Strategic ::.. Indian Navy: The Gorshkov deal

I would like to see India neutral too, but there are some countries which are not ready to accept that.

Looking at the pics atleast 12 fighters can be comfortably parked in the deck of vicky... I think the hangar capacity is also 12. So total 24. How many choppers are mandatory for its safe operation at war time ?
