2 Vikrant-class aircraft carriers are on order right now. The navy might increase the order depending upon the needs.

As if now, HAL and Aeronautical Development Agency are working on the navy version of Tejas so Mig-29's won't be the only aircraft's carried. As far as my opinion goes, I don't think mig's are odd for the job.

Mig 29 was also candidate for FAF, but lost to F-18. Choice was said to be after rigorous testing, when mig lost. Hope you are happy with these new versions.

F-18 was always a piece of shit. Mig-29K's are suited to Vikrant compared to F-18 and Rafale that cannot even take off from STOBAR's. Anyway both F-18/16 and Mig-35 lost in the IAF trials.

FAF is happy with it, it is rugged enough to be operated from secret public road air strips. With upgrades it will serve for 40 years. Mig was too light with high profile accidents at the time did not help either.

Good luck to FAF. IAF did not like any of the F series and it was never an option for IN. Mig-29's in IAF have had issued with FOD and short range but never with ruggedness. Most russian air crafts are more rugged than american.

The teens are obsolete right now. They were at helm a decade ago.

I think India will buy stuff from counties it trusts. USA is a new supplier for India. India has no long term experience with USA.

The fighter jets are difficult for India to buy from USA at this point.

If relations remain good in future then F-35 could be a buy.

Though I think India will definitely build local fighters in larger numbers so imports may diminish.

i had said that i would try to bring photos of VKD's anniversary, but the navy took all cellphones as soon they reached thae karwar base.
though i will tell you how matters stand with VKD and how the anniversary went on.

1)ONE YEAR ON since her induction, VKD still has no air defence system.
2)during the lunch in the hangar ,visitors were shown videos of first landings of all pilots as of yet, along with night takeoffs and landings, and takeoffs with munitions.
3)no ships were in harbour other than VKD except one ship which was removed out of water and being repaired.it couldn't be identified because it was so stripped of all radars, guns, just hull could be seen.
4)the second elevator is indeed usable to bring up mig29k's contrary to what many experts say.(as videos show).
5)flight ops(only landing shown) can continue when when the forward elevator is being used, though not advisable.(as videos show).

INS Vikramaditya completes a year with the Indian Navy
November 25, 2014 Alexander Yemelyanenkov, specially for RIR

It's been over a year since the INS Vikramaditya was handed over to the Indian Navy.

Recently, specialists from Rosoboronexport and Russian equipment suppliers inspected the flagship Indian aircraft carrier as a part of the warranty agreement.

According to Sergey Marichev, Deputy Director General of the defense shipyard Sevmash, where the carrier has been substantially re-born, the Indian Navy has been using the ship intensively for the entire year. It spent more than 220 days at sea. "And that's more than the aircraft carrier spent in the Northern Seas on factory tests in two years," the Severodvinsk shipyard said in a press note.

Since the official transfer of Vikramaditya, several Indian leaders have the visited the ship, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi. In the presence of distinguished guests, and in a conventional setting, the MiG-26 K/KUBs have carried out 240 takeoffs and landings. As a result, the Indian pilots under the supervision of the MiG Corp completed the entire training program, including the preparation for independent night flights.

During the whole time, the aircraft carrier had aboard a guarantee group of Sevmash specialists, who provided technical advice when needed and responded promptly to one or the other difficulty related to operating systems and mechanisms. The one-year warranty service expired on November 16th. But even before the expiration, the Indian side expressed the desire to extend the business relationship with the Russian shipyard and to agree on the service support for the aircraft carrier for its entire life cycle, which is at least 20 years.

Russian shipbuilders and representatives of the Indian Defence Ministry are meeting in New Delhi this week to discuss the details of the carrier's after-sales service. And in late November, Vikramaditya will be put to sea again in order to continue flying aircraft in low visibility conditions.

Remembering Admiral Gorshkov

At sea, the Indian sailors and the airmen of the carrier-based aircraft will be accompanied by a Russian friend.

Before the ship was sent to its current post of service, on one of its decks the craftsmen of Sevmash constructed a museum cabin, with exhibits that describe the design, the construction and the military service of the ship as part of the Soviet Navy, followed by the transformation of the cruiser into a modern aircraft carrier.

In the centre of the memorial exhibition, next to the St. Andrew's flag and the banner of the Russian Navy, there is a recognizable bust of Admiral Gorshkov. "In India, he is remembered and respected," said Commodore Suraj Berry. "That's why we gladly accepted such a gift to the crew and we will look after it."

Russian specialists to service India's Vikramaditya carrier on permanent basis

SEVERODVINSK, Arkhangelsk Region, December 9. /TASS/. A special group of Russian specialists will be responsible for the post-guarantee maintenance of India's aircraft carrier The Vikramaditya in India on the permanent basis, the general director of the naval shipyard Sevmash, Mikhail Budnichenko, told TASS in an interview. The Vikramaditya (formerly The Admiral Gorshkov) was upgraded at the Sevmash shipyard. Since its handover to India in November 2013, it has spent more than 220 days on the high seas. The warranty period expired on November 16. Budnichenko said a group of 23 specialists will be present in India on the permanent basis and address day-to-day issues, such as supplies of spare parts and equipment requiring maintenance or repairs. Also, it will be making arrangements for the annual overhaul together with a maintenance group from Russia. All works are to be done under specifications and in amounts agreed with the Indian side.

If I have read correctly, the Russian specialists are not serving 'on board', but are located at maintenance facilities to maintain and service the carrier once it enters for maintenance.
