New SATCOM radome atop the island. This spot was speculated to be a place for Barak-8 system.

KOCHI: The VIPs of the Indian Navy are here. Aircraft carriers INS Vikramaditya and INS Viraat reached Kochi on Monday. This is the first time that the newly acquired INS Vikramaditya is visiting Kochi after she entered into the service of the Indian Navy. It is also the first time that both aircraft carriers of the Indian Navy are berthing in Kochi simultaneously. The fleet of seven ships under the Western Naval Command, including the two aircraft carriers, is commanded by Flag Officer Commanding Western fleet Rear Admiral R Hari Kumar. The visit of the fleet is aimed at professional interactions between the officers and men of the different training units in Kochi and the visiting ships. The interaction is aimed at synergising the training and operational aspects of the Navy. Acquired in 2013 and formally inducted into service in June 2014. Vikramaditya, is based at Karwar in Karnataka and is commanded by Captain Suraj Berry. Originally built and commissioned in 1987, the carrier served with the Soviet Union and later with the Russian Navy as Admiral Gorshkov before it was decommissioned in 1996 owing to the high cost of operations. The carrier was purchased by India in January 2004 and she was handed over in 2013 after refitting and sea trials. The ship has been fully integrated with the fleet post trials and has successfully participated in the recently concluded Theater level Readiness and Operational Exercise (TROPEX) where it was extensively used in its operational role. INS Virat, the other aircraft carrier is commanded by Capt Rajesh Pendharkar.

Yes, as commissioned she has no built in SAM's installed. CIWS is installed however and provision for Barak-8 is also in place but at the moment the only missiles are Igla VSHORAD.

Barak-8 was not installed as at the time of commissioning the system was not yet operational due to developmental delays. It is in fact still not operational or in-service as the testing is still ongoing. Vikramaditya will have the launchers installed during her first major dry docking (after 5 years in service) by which time the system should have attained operational clearance

Vikramaditya is apparently being fitted with the launchers for Barak-2 as we speak. No missiles in them as yet however but they are taking the opportunity to get the initial fittings done while the vessel is undergoing some routine dockside maintenance.

Russia's largest military shipyard, Sevmash, has agreed to continue providing technical assistance for the Indian navy's Soviet-built aircraft carrier, the shipyard said in a statement Wednesday. The aircraft carrier's one-year manufacturer's warranty expired last year. The INS Vikramaditya carrier is India's biggest ship, and with little domestic experience servicing such a large vessel, India is looking to secure a long-term warranty from Russia. India has proposed a 40-year contract, Sevmash said in the statement. The agreement, which covers repair work for various Russian- made hardware aboard the Vikramaditya, is the first step in a larger set of negotiations for a comprehensive long-term warranty for the vessel. The Vikramaditya is already an old ship. Originally named the Admiral Gorshkov when it was built by the Soviets in the 1980s, the vessel was mothballed in the 1990s after it was crippled by a boiler room explosion. India received the aircraft carrier for free in 2004, but agreed to pay Sevmash almost $1 billion to completely overhaul and modify the ship to New Delhi's needs. The project, which was supposed to take four years, ultimately stretched on for nine. By the time the vessel was handed over to the Indian navy in November 2013, the price of the project had grown to almost $3 billion.
