Vizag harbour is too crowded now and it does not offer alternative escape route to the fleet. If you sink even one ship in its main channel, the entire fleet will get stuck inside the harbour. This is what PNS Ghazi had planned to do in 1971 as it cud sail very close to the harbour mouth due to steep continental shelf.
However Vizag has very steep continental shelf and so it is ideal for submarine base and IN is already constructing a new naval base bigger than Karwar close to vizag which will have submarine pans in the hills aound it. once we have Vikky in the fleet, Viraat might move to east with SH fleet and with Induction of IAC-1, we might see it being based in east. After that Eastern command will become the biggest and most potent command of the IN as it will in addition house complete nuke sub fleet also besides having Andaman fleet under its ops control.

It does not matter its small or big, What important is that these are Major bases and have facilities for logistics and maintenance and located at strategic locations with warships and can hold a good number of ships in fleets ..

no way of comparison with karwar.they are small

The world knows it anyways as I have not posted the most recent pix. This pix is very old. The lay of the hills was the deciding factor. Just like karwar, this base can't targetted from China's land based nukes. Originally Gannawaram was chosen but it did not have this kind of natural protection.

Few more points for the one who may not know, That gaps can be closed on both side with help of Anti-Sub / torpedo nets ..

Such measure can be taken during hostile times ..
Was this how PNS Ghazi was sunk?

We have very strong and aggressive tactics when the fleet breaks out to the sea. We depth charge each and every inch of the harbour mouth to kill any sub waiting to hit us. In addition we do lot of masking of ships to fool subs. Ghazi sank while trying to escape these attacks while INS Vikrant had been moved into hiding in Andamans.
The brillience of 1971 ops w.r.t 1965 was that our political leadership had no clue of the attack plans of our armed forces otherwise they too wud have been leaked to US & CIA.

You make it sound like that's still the plan.

does it mean no current need of increasing bases or respective sizes of bases?

Expansion as per need is always welcome, But undermining the importance of major strategic based on size cannot be judged, If not otherwise would not be in strategic locations on first place ..

^^ In the third take off in the above video you can see MiG-29K take off with two drop tanks, one center line tank, two air to surface and two air to air missiles.

^^ Contains pretty good footage of low passes by MiG-29K and Ka-31, onboard take off and landing footage from MiG-29K.
