@Kunal Biswas if you look at the video and screen shots of the same, color of explosions and the point where it held says lot. Plus the way INS Sindhurakshak was on the deck also tell us what would be extent of damage on the sub.

if you see first pic of the blast, it location is different and color is different, then it goes bigger and subsequently blast move and then color change (most likely Klub missile fuel and explosives).

If klub missile and torpedo have exploded inside then sub will have same damage as on the Russian sub Krusk.
There would be still some chances for the personnel if they were at a different compartment away from the missile section,

Hope some one makes it alive, most of IN's attempts to expand it's fleet was hobbled not just by lack of resource but also corruption allegations from civilian higher ups,

Hope civilian higher ups who do merry go around with corruptions in defence deals atleast realize now that they are playing with the lives of people and the honor of the country because at the first hint of corruption most defence deals get mothballed or scrapped like Bofors,HDW which add to depleting fleet worry of IN.

Since there are so many ways to make billions of dollars in corrupt deals in this country ,

without putting their hands into defence deals ,

the politicians should refrain from playing with the safety of the country and the lives of the service personnel.

Thanks saya for a fair reply!!! Do you remember!!! when Nerpa was ready to be sent to India on lease.there was an explosion in the sub and Russian submariners lost their lives!!! was it not a sabotage?
Venkat, in submarine, it is confine space, lots of dangerous gases, one single spark can light off fire and then bad things happen if it is not brought to control then it can be fatal to crew.

Since it is dangerous job, in Indian navy it is voluntary to enlist in Submarine wing.

Although now lots of safety features are their still bad things happen in life.

I am not very big fan of Russian equipment, but at least it is easily available to us.

is there any mullah among the 18 or in the entire crew!!! can plant an IED with timer coinciding with pak independence day !!! sorry to say this ,but cant help it.....one person was caught near kalpakkam with 400 photos of kalpakkam reactor.!!! The arrested person was a mullah!!!
The names of the crew has NOT been released

And if it is proved to be sabotage then perhaps we will
Know after many many days because initially it will be suppressed

Though yesterday Naval Chief promised that the findings of the C- O- I will be made Public

Navy divers enter Sindhurakshak submarine, but all 18 sailors feared dead
Navy divers have entered the Sindhurakshak submarine hit by twin explosions, but have yet to reach any of the 18 sailors who are feared dead inside the vessel, a naval official said Thursday. The Russian-built submarine had also been damaged in a deadly explosion in 2010 and had only recently returned to service.

The navy official, speaking on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to speak to the media, said water was being pumped from the flooded, diesel-powered submarine so it could be raised completely to the surface. It is currently partially submerged at a dock in a Mumbai navy base, with a portion visible above the waterline.

He said there had been no contact with the sailors since the explosions, which lit up the sky above the base. The official said there appeared to be no way the sailors could have survived the intensity of the blasts and fire.

"We hope for the best but we have to prepare for the worst," Admiral DK Joshi, the navy chief, told reporters Wednesday earlier in Mumbai.

The explosions in the submarine's torpedo compartment sent a huge fireball into the air and sent nearby sailors jumping into the sea in panic. It is shaping up to be another embarrassment for the military, which has been hit with a corruption scandal as it races to modernize its forces.

Because the submarine was docked, navy watchmen were on the submarine rather than the normal crew, Joshi said. At least some weaponry exploded in the near-simultaneous blasts, he added.

A video of the explosions filmed by bystanders showed an enormous ball of red and yellow fire rising hundreds of feet into the air. About a dozen fire engines rushed to the dockyard and extinguished the fire in about two hours, officials said.

Navy spokesman Narendra Vispute said the cause of the explosions was being investigated.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh in his Independence day speech honored those killed in Wednesday's explosion and fire. "We pay homage to these martyrs," he said in brief comments during a speech to mark the anniversary of India's 1947 independence from Britain.

I dont know about Kilo, It is possible that fire and fumes could spread further into compartments by air vents which are connected to all compartments..

By looking at bright white and blue the temperature could be extremely high where the explosion took place ..

===============

Missile were in tight nitrogen filled containers, I doubt they can be exploded but the torpedo are placed in open, Its possible torpedo some how leaking kerosine, Older Torpedo may be rusty with poor welding which cause the leak.. ?

My suspicion is on hydrogen from batt and leaking torpedo fuel ..

Russian missiles & System malfunction at very hi rate, Compare to our own ..

In Army there are fire trails at different branches twice a year, Foreign visitors and Guests take tours of these trails, I have been in last 3 tours in last 2 years..

Hence my remarks..
but still army want more T90s than arjun, so sad..
back to topic, is there any hope for any one to survive?
and can sub be recovered, i hope for both...

It already faced accident because of faulty battery in 2010 ,its a crime of negligence or easy going of neta ,that too after refit. One frigate got destroyed before in collision, something fishy
navy have to move to less crowded places, mumbai is its largest base but it is busiest dock too.
its for navy and govt decision to move navy from civilian areas same should happen to both army and airforce.
reason, security, operations don't come in public eye etc.
There is surely negligence, but no comments till facts come out.
Navy needs to iron out its procedure, same goes for airforce.
really disappointed with accident rates in indian armed forces..these needs to be ironed out first.

its a little suspicious this happened on the vicinity of Pakistan independence day which will gie rise to a lot of conspiracy theories.

I have full faith in the Navy's internal enquiry..their integrity and professionalism is second to none and once the root cause is found changes to SOP and preventive measures will be taken.

the accident is indeed very sad and a huge blow to the aldready diminishing submarine fleet levels..also this was a Kilo which is a fairly good submarine..If you ask me working in a sub is akin to working on a spaceshuttle in space , its a dangerious enviornment to be in if something goes wrong.

Maybe this unfortunate incident will help push the procurement of more subs without any corrupton accusations..

Navy chief himself has not ruled out sabotage!!!
Navy Chief has not rule out sabotage, as the report from the investigators have not come. Therefore it will be prudent of him, not to rule out anything. Lets not stretched it too far. I am sure some surveillance cameras are placed on the area in question. Let them first do the investigation and then say what has happen. Nation wants answer.

on serious note this sub was purchased from Russia, earlier also it was involved in small accident with other sub, we spend lot of money for mid life upgrade and for Klub missiles on it, now all that money and loss of 18 submariners lives is very serious matter. What is why, i said that line.
