it seems - 'at the stroke of T-95 cancellation' - IA and the blogger had a dream wherein an angel appeared and revealed the 'imagined specs' for the FMBT!!!

'hyberbar engine', a tank which can beat a formula 1 car...

yaaawn... sigh... 0_0

..................

if T-95 was on, may be, one would have never heard of these specs as it would have been an automatic choice.

since Arjun is coming along fine, introduce new specs and let the wild goose chase begin again....

great work. every one here, please clap and cheer... a new FMBT is around the corner!!!!

Building such a giant machine by DRDO is not the question, but the question is will army allow its induction in near future (being product of DRDO) ??????????

Shiv Aroor has been posting absurd articles on Arjun for last few months and I think that he is being fed by leaks that new batch of Arjun Mark-1 will not be ordered. While other open sources are saying that between 124-250 more Arjun Mark 1 may be ordered before going on to Mark2. I think that source of Shiv decided to have the last laugh to decide what is the extent to which he can make a fool of SHiv. It seems that every nonsense he could think of, has been posted by Shiv, withoiut understanding the implication thereof. Lets us see whether and when next batch of Arjun-mark2 will be ordered

Rarely one gets an opportunity to say - I told you so within 24 hours. It seems that GoI has made a press release that another 124 tanks have been ordered. Though compared to 1600+ T-90s ordered, this order is not even a fraction thereof!

another 124 Arjun MBT does not amount to much ,recently DRDO have said that Arjun has performed better than T-90 ,well i would like to ask that which army officer the are quoting or any army officer has said that yes indeed Arjun s better than T-90
talking about future MBT ,we should pair up with Russian development of T-95 (t-95 name is give by media and is not the orginial name of the project ),

Russia is not develpoing any super tank as people here are mentioning. In last 2 decades, we have seen hundreds of T series blown apart most of them killing their crews. Recents are in Gerogia, where T72BM equivelent to T90S, turret flying. In India we are still loving this tank and buying it. Some indian drinks a lot of Russian Vodka, it seems. T95 are whatever is called is cancelled and dead and mentioning it is like dead man walking.

by mistake ,i did not read that T-95 development is halted ,but still it would be good idea for India and Russia to pair up and develop next generation tank

Army for laser-based weapons on its futuristic tanks.

New Delhi, May 23 (PTI) Looking to strengthen its armoured capabilities, the Indian Army wants its futuristic Main Battle Tank to be equipped with high-powered lasers for taking on enemy rockets, aircraft and electro-optical sensors.

"High/medium-energy level laser is expected to be a lethality option against rockets, air vehicles, light ground vehicles, antennas of armoured vehicles and electro-optical sensors," the Army stated in its long-term technology plans submitted to the Defence Ministry.

Officials said concerned DRDO labs are already working in this direction and developing the capability.

They added that these capabilities might be deployed on the Arjun Mk-II project, which was recently cleared by the Defence Ministry after the Army decided to place orders for another 124 Arjun MBTs with the DRDO.?????????????????

The Soviets and then Russia were the first to design and employ hard kill APS called Drozd and Arena. Then came the Israelis with the Trophy. The Americans are developing the Quick Kill. None employ lasers. So, this might be a first.

Since the news is from PTI, the army requirement is genuine.

DRDO is nearly done developing a laser that can kill land mines at distances of 250m.
http://www.zeenews.com/news619052.html

Then DRDO is also working on other high powered Lasers based on Chemical oxygen iodine and Hf-Df.

They have stopped working on Liquid Oxygen because it is very difficult. Only US has Liquid Oxygen Lasers. So, lets see if DRDO can deliver on this. Israeli help may be required to develop an AESA based radar for this APS or hopefully DRDO can deliver on this too. The requirement may materialize only 4-5 years from now.

How much energy is requierd for a laser based gun. IA may asked DRDO to put nuclear power plant in the tank. Why they did not asked for laser based wepons on T90S.

That is another good point. There is no way powerpacks are going to hold enough energy to power a 50kw laser. The tank would have to haul a couple trailers full of the equipment and generators just to run it. It is an absurd idea at the level of even US technology, much less India.

We inducted the T-90 in early 2000. The Russians don't give away everything. Even asking for the Arena is a bit out of line for them. They won't give it.

The US and Europe have invested and developed materials, nuclear sciences, aeronautics, electronics etc since decades and catching up to these sciences will be difficult. However, there are certain core technologies where Europe and US are working on even now. Those are Biotechnology, Nanotechnology, AI and perhaps even LASERS. The fact is if any other country wants to have a trump card, it will have to be in these sectors since they are in their infancy. The start line is now and not 50 years ago. So, all major breakthroughs in these technologies will happen now or in the future. So, why miss the train.

The US is certainly ahead of all in Lasers. Let's see if somebody can catch up to or surpass the US. The power required for Lasers will be big. It is not possible in the immediate future.

Since the army has directed LASTEC to develop a new weapon system, they may get more direct funding for the project and help them focus better on it. Let's see where that will take us.

That is true.

That is correct.
Laser based weapons will be designed to burn/destroy very high valued target like nuclear missile/warhead in air or ground, long range air defence battery or an aircraft carrier etc. I doubt even western countries are going to put laser wepons on their MBTs to attack taliban mullas in afganistan. For me, asking laser on MBT is just a ploy to cancel any future induction of homegrown MBT specially Arjun MkII. Also how much a laser gun will cost. Laser will be used as strategic wepons not as a tank gun.

Russians don't have a tactical laser that will fit on a tank. No one does... They will sell all the Arena you are willing to buy, even ToT can be had for the right price. Secret is out, no one wants it.

The US is certainly ahead of all in Lasers. Let's see if somebody can catch up to or surpass the US. The power required for Lasers will be big. It is not possible in the immediate future.
France is building the world's most powerful laser 2012.

How will you mount a 50kw laser on a tank? Can't be done in this generation.

That has been my concern since i heard this news.
Hopefully someone will see the light of reason.
But then again.
You cant ask for such a system on one tank and then induct another one lacking anything of the sort.

At best it may delay the Arjun

While i agree , that talk of fielding such a system in this decade is foolhardy.

The basic underlying technology is not that un-feasible.
A low range , quick laser burst at an oncoming object would be enough , maybe a decade or two down the line , its a good possibility.

Let's not forget a lot of new technologies for tanks
involve a lot of power

Electric reactive armour
EM assisted gun barrels(rail guns that don't quite accelerate enough to be called rail guns , but when used in conjunction with regular canister rounds do cause an increase in range and velocity, saw it on future weapons)

There are a lot of power requriments now at days.

It could be possible to have such a system some time in the foreseeable future, but not in the next 3-5 years.

How will you mount a 50kw laser on a tank? Can't be done in this generation.
You cam up with the 50kW laser ,
no one else quoted that number.

I think it is a definite possibility in the next decade.

DRDO developing laser-based bomb disposal kit

New Delhi: DRDO is developing a laser-based system which can neutralise land mines and improvised explosive devices (IEDs) from a distance of 250 metres without risking the lives of troops.

"We are in the process of developing the Laser Ordnance Disposal System (LORDS) which can be used for neutralizing mines, IEDs and other forms of explosives, planted by terrorists, from a distance of up to 250 meters," DRDO's Laser Science and Technology Centre (LASTEC) Director A K Maini told PTI here.

The system directs a high-energy invisible infrared beam on the target, which can be anything from land mines, IEDs or old bombs in the forces' inventory, and burns the explosive material inside them and renders them useless, he added.

LASTEC, working on directed energy laser systems and technologies, has already developed a prototype of the system, which has been extensively tested on various types of explosives.

Once developed, the system could be used by Army and Paramilitary personnel in insurgency-infested states such as Jammu and Kashmir, Northeast and the naxal-affected areas, Maini said.

"Neutralization of ordnance is a hazardous process that is prone to accidents and casualties. LORDS can help in safe disposal of ordnances." Maini said while referring to the huge stockpiles of ammunition that have outlived their shelf lives.

LASTEC is also working on the concept of developing another high power laser system that can be used to set terrorists' hideouts on fire from a safe distance of over 300 meters without exposing personnel to the firing from terrorists.

Post 26/11, DRDO has increased its focus on urban warfare and has opened a Low Intensity Conflict (LIC) Division that would cater to weapons, equipment and life support systems for the paramilitary and police forces.
