The PDV MK2 nomeclature is just a cover and the actual name is XSV-1. It is designed to intercept satellites in LEO upto 2000 km altitude with a weight of 18 tons having boosters from agni 3/5 family.
Now it shows that we have the neccesary mid course interceptor missile with a KKV and required lateral thrusters. IIR with 50-100 km range is also developed. The current range of DRDO Swordfish is 1500 km
Hence groundwork for phase 2(for 5k missile) and phase 3(for 10-12k missile) of bmd is slowly being put in place. All we now need is long range radars (3000 km for phase 3) and space based assets to monitor launches.
In reality the misile for phase 2 is ad-1 and ad-2 which will be smaller than xsv-1 but bigger than aad/pdv missiles.

Yes. They wanted to camoflague the Asat project as part of BMD program. Hence the name.

Intercepting a missile coming from 5000 km is similar to one coming from 10000 km in terms of RV speeds. PDV Mk2 isn't phase 3. PDV Mk2 has shown that if we wanted to intercept an ICBM in the mid course phase or just at the start of the RE entry phase, then this is the answer. That massive booster.

AD-1 and AD-2 are meant for 5500-12000 km class missiles but they will intercept the warhead during re entry. Due to the size of their boosters they aren't mid course material unlike PDV MKII. They are our very own THAAD and Thaad Er.

Whereas PDV MKII is our version of GBI from Boeing as I had earlier said. XSM-1 stood for Xperimental Shakti mission - 1. 1 being the first test.

Both AD-1 and 2 and PDV MKII can intercept 5500 km class missiles and even higher ranged ones. But one targets the hostile ballistic missile in the RE entry descent phase, the other in the mid course phase.

I though ASAT weapons are equal to our GMD. Midcourse interceptor.

In the above article by indranil , he wonders about the purpose of the 8 vents/ports at the base of the PDV stage ( 1st stage ), just above the 2nd stage interstage.

AFAIK those 8 ports are part of the dual thrust control system of the KKV.

The 8 ports house the 8 thrusters for the ACS ( altitude control system ).

The 8 attitude control system (ACS) thrusters provides provide roll, pitch and yaw control for the KKV. These thrusters act synergistically and accurately position the KKV ie IIR seeker to properly view the target. While the four thrusters of the divert control system (DCS) provide the desired thrust to quickly and accurately position the kill vehicle on a guaranteed HTK ( hit to kill ) flight path to target.

Note AFAIK the DCS thrusters generates ON/OFF thrust only . They do not provide variable thrust, which is provided by the ACS thrusters only.

This is how the ACS thrusters will look like inside the vent/port. And it will be flush with the missile body. ( pic posted for giving generic idea only )

Now bhakts coming to the Ankit Panda article on the earlier BMD test.

1. Drdo insiders had refuted his claims that it was an ASAT test. Says the test was a success. Source. The Tribune.

2. Ankit Panda claims that the March 27th NOTAM matches with the Feb 12th NOTAM. Earlier when we had issued NOTAM for BMD interceptor tests especially the pad and pdv ones, the NOTAM issued looked very similar to the one issued for the 27th Asat test. Ravi Gupta, a retired Drdo missile complex scientist had confirmed the same in the Ndtv show.

3. Ankit Panda claims that the Microsat R satellite was at a similar altitude and position in space when we launched PDV at 11:10 am - 5:40 UST on Feb 12th. Similar to the Microsat R altitude and position on Feb 27th. Panda then applies his retard logic and says since Microsat R was in a similar position during these two tests, we had indeed conducted an Asat test on Feb 12th where the interceptor had failed to hit Microsat R.

Now Here IS THE Important part.
Microsat R is a military sat and carried experimental DRDO payloads. Now WHAT PAYLOAD did it carry? Microsat R carried IMAGING ELECTRO OPTICAL PAYLOADS. So what had indeed happened is that PDV made a close pass, a deliberate close approach to the Microsat R satellite in the Feb 12th test. And Microsat R saw the approaching KKV and its different maneuvers in real time. This data was relayed back and was used to judge the KKV performance - the divert thruster altitude control and reaction performance, the IIR seeker performance. What was the miss distance? Whether there was a direct hit on the imaginary target. This imaginary sat was some distance away from the Microsat R so that the imaging payload can track and see what was happening.

The PDV used in the Feb 12th test had this all new KV which employed the 1000 pixel FPA. This test was used to validate the KKV performance before the actual satellite intercept--a kind of dry run and our Microsat R saw this in real time and relayed back this data. Which was used by DRDO to fine tune the KV.

This was why Microsat R was in that position in space and alt on Feb 12th which is exactly similar to its 3D position on March 27th .
BUT DRDO couldn't possibly have revealed this. Coz then the BMD cover which we used for the ASAT missile test would be blown and people would come to know of our direct ascent Anti satellite missile program. So DRDO sources had said PDV was tested against an electronic target ON Feb -12th The missile rose smoothly, made a cross over and all mission objectives were met.


But ANKIT PANDA being a first rate arsehole and Vipin Narang, his equally brain dead rtard missile defense expert obviously failed to see this. Coz they are too highly qualified to make such a common sensical conclusion. Then with much fanfare Mr Ankit wrote an article forvthe Diplomat and proudly announced to the world that India had failed in its first Anti satellite missile test. And then Ndtv came into the picture and aired his opinion.

NO ONE FOR A MOMENT HAD REALISED WHAT WE HAD REALLY DONE.
Excellent analysis ! Had never heard of Ankit panda/vipin narang, boy these leftist cabals run deep. Is there no end to them ?

Probably to debunk all those ugly rumors about failed test, maybe enlighten everyone about the ground tracking systems(hopefully about some new extra long ranged ones), confirm that majority if not nigh all the debris have fallen and decayed, also probably to confirm the satellite which was destroyed and hopefully something extra, something juicy that pulls the rug under pakis, chinis & muricans.

Yep. You are right. Watch the DRDO press briefing. But the Divert control system can provide variable thrust.
