Satellite-killer not a one-off, India working on star wars armoury

NEW DELHI: After successfully testing an anti-satellite (ASat) missile last month, India is now also working to develop other counterspace capabilities like directed energy weapons (DEWs) and co-orbital killers as well as the ability to protect its own satellites from electronic or physical attacks.

“We are working on a number of technologies like DEWs, lasers, electromagnetic pulse (EMP) and co-orbital weapons etc. I can’t divulge the details, but we are taking them forward,” said DRDO chief G Satheesh Reddy on Saturday. The A-Sat missile that destroyed the Microsat-R satellite, at an altitude of 283-km in the low-earth orbit (LEO) on March 27, was a “directascent, kinetic kill” weapon. It’s “feasible” to target multiple satellites with multiple launches of the three-stage interceptor missile, which can go up to 1,000 km into space," said the DRDO chief.
A coorbital weapon, in turn, is basically a satellite equipped with some explosive, weapon or DEW device, which is first put into orbit and then later manoeuvred to target the enemy satellite. Apart from these kinetic kill weapons, other ASAT weapons like lasers jammers, EMP and high-powered microwaves are being rapidly developed by China, which first tested an A-Sat missile against a LEO weather satellite in January 2007.

Trying to play catch-up, sources say India’s long-term aim is to develop A-Sat weapons against satellites in both LEO and GEO-synchronous orbits as a credible deterrence against emerging threats to its growing spacebased assets. “Conversely, EMP hardening of our satellites and sensors, apart from other measures, can be done to protect them from our adversaries,” said a source.

"There is a plan to launch mini-satellites on demand for the armed forces if the main satellites are targeted,” said a source. DRDO for long has also been running programmes on a wide variety of DEWs like high-energy lasers and highpowered microwaves capable of destroying aerial and ground-based targets, but whether they can be successfully developed into A-Sat weapons remains to be seen.

DRDO chief G Satheesh Reddy, on his part, said it was for the government to decide on the issue of weaponisation of A-Sat systems or the creation of a fullfledged Aerospace Military Command. “Space has gained importance in the military domain. The best way to ensure security is to have deterrence,” he said. The DRDO chief made it clear that there was no move to conduct additional tests of the new A-Sat missile as of now.

“Though we tested the interceptor missile for an altitude below 300 km as a responsible nation after multiple simulations, it has the technical capability to go beyond 1,000 km. That will cover most of the orbiting satellites in LEO. For the same purpose, we don’t need more tests,” he said. The target satellite was hit with an accuracy of less than 10 cm, on par with “the best reported performances” of such A-Sat missiles worldwide. “So, it meets all our objectives. The successful demonstration of ‘Mission Shakti’ has placed India in the elite club of three countries (US, Russia and China) possessing the A-Sat capability,” Reddy added.

I think best part is IR Seeker. Its small but good at 200kms. We have to miniaturized entire kill vehicle and make it into 1-2 ft long. The put it this vehicle with IR seeker in 10-20 in numbers for MKV.

This American kill vehicle is about 12 inches, as per video.

Nope. We don't need to miniaturize our kill vehicle. Dr G Reddy had said yesterday in his speech that the second stage solid booster cut off happened at over 100 kms. From 100+ km, the KKV attained a altitude of 283 km. It travelled more than 200 kms by itself. I am sure that this KKV has a higher range. More propellants can be carried due to its size. Also this KV has a higher no of thrusters. 4 divert placed at the CG, eight altitude control and for correcting small errors are placed at the base.

Our KV is a monster. Good range. Excellent accuracy. Due to the large propellant carriage, the thrusters of the DCAS can fire a higher no of Times to change the trajectory and for very fine adjustments.
Think it it as being able to interdict and shoot down a maneuvering RV - one which is zig sagging or pulling high Gs and continously changing its trajectory.

It's an ICBM killer. And that too in its mid course. A Shaheen 2/3 annihilator. DF-24 and 31 are fair game too. This kill vehicle isn't meant for Ghauri and Ghaznavi. It's for taking out their baaps.

Jeffrey Lewis@, Armscontrolwonk another so called Western Missile defense expert has posted this pic and said that India has poor sensor technology, that's why they had to hit from below so that seeker can see the satellite against a black sky. No clutter.

Someone needs to enlighten him of the fact that this has been captured by a ground based EO station. The kill vehicle had actually made a head on collision in the horizontal plane as can be seen in this pic .

And Ankit is still in denial. He is still claiming that the Feb 12th test was a failure despite what was said by the DG himself yesterday.

There isn't an iota of difference between Ankit and your average Pakistani. They both think on the same lines and they both are butthurt when India achieves something or creates a record.

Tyler of The drive warzone is another White Abdul. He too is so butthurt that he is yet to pen an article on India's successful ASAT missile test and what are its implications despite writing a detailed article on the the recent GMD GBI test of March 25th where two interceptors were launched against an ICNM representative target.

And another thing.

The PDV Mk2 can intercept an IRBM and ICBM comfortably in the mid course of its flight well before the missile last stage bus gets the chance to deploy its MIRV or Marv payloads.

Any leakers that get past through can be intercepted with the PDV and AAD combo.


The 27th test used 4 radars. Two LRTR and two MFCR. A LRTR MFCR pair was located right at Balasore or some place close.

Look at the bottom left corner. You will find a LRTR deployment. And notice the sheer range of the IIR seeker. The green triangle in the above pic is the seeker field of view. It's actually a cone.

Yes, that is exactly what happened, Dr G. S. Reddy mimed the trajectory of the ASAT interception with his fingers for some of the dumbass presstitutes while explaining how most of the debris didn't go up and the ones that did will decay fast.

Jeffrey Lewis is yet another anti india pro paki poster who was denying the Balakot strikes until raj47 debunked his ass.
I think either he or someone in his blog or something also said the most fallacious nonsense on Tejas while praising the shitfest known as JF-17.

I think we still need AD-1 and AD-2 to complement our terminal phase interceptor AAD and PDV to take care of high speed targets (5-7Km/sec icbm class re-entry vehicles) while PDV MK2 (or xsv-1) takes care of mid-course interception. These will be sleek and taller than AAD and PDV (as shown in an earlier DRDO presentaion) and will complete phase 2 of bmd.



Another off-shoot programme of AAD will be XR-SAM with range greater than 300 km which will be our desi S-400. It will take care of cruise missiles and aircrafts like J-20, J-31 and whatever pakis can throw at us.

#DRDO ASAT IIR SEEKER And this seeker can identify and lock targets in space ~ 200km ( will wait for confirmation later ) Damn personally first time I am hearing about a IIR seeker of such huge range , AFAIK ordinarily IIR seekers in missiles have range <40 km .

Am crazy about BMD. Have watched almost all if not all the videos out there


Watch this video on Thaad er. People will understand the real significance of the PDV MKII after watching this marketing video.
Due to its sheer range, PDV MKII can provide ballistic missile defense cover to an area which is atleast three times the area covered by the regular PDV.

In a sense PDV Mk2 is to PDV(albeit with a brand new KKV having an accuracy less than a millisecond and a new higher r IIR seeker) as Thaad er is to Thaad.

Why a kill vehicle with better than a millisecond reaction is required? Because when intercepting a sat in LEO, closing speeds are greater than 10km/sec. So in a millisecond, both the kill vehicle and the sat would have covered 10 metres relative to each other. The satellite itself would have travelled 7.8 metres in a millisecond . So if the kinetic kill vehicle has a reaction time greater than a milli second, say 2-3 milliseconds, the miss distance would be 2 * 10 metres =20m and there wouldn't be a direct collision.

The kill vehicle hit the middle of the Microsat R with an accuracy of less than 10 cms.

What is interesting is that #DRDO PDV MK 2 ASAT made kinetic kill on a satellite moving at a very high speed of 10 km per second ie 36 Mach shocked And with a accuracy
The Microsat R was traveling at 7.8 km/sec. The closing velocity - relative velocity was 10.45 km/sec.

An ICBM RV would be traveling at 7 km/sec. So this test has a lot of implications for our BMD. This kinetic kill vehicle will now be used in the PDV missile.
