Let me give a brief summary;
1. Track and Field:
In men's javelin we are among the best; 3 Indians reaching the final in world championship establishes our depth. We should be having 3 throwers throwing 88-90 m shortly - unfortunately, Rohit Yadav got injured else there wd be 4. Not even the Germans have such depth.

In women's javelin Annu Rani is good but inconsistent. Have some decent throwers in juniors also.

In men's long jump and triple jump we are slowly getting there but it will take some time before we start winning medals in big tourneys (Asian events don't count) - same with women's LJ where both Ancy and Shaili are very young and might even be potential 7 m+ jumper in a year. To give you some perspective, a 7 m jump is generally enough to win gold in an Olympic final.

I am more worried about men's and women's pole vault - have not seen much there.

In men's high jump both TJ and Sarvesh are decent but not medal contenders yet. In women's high jump a 16 year old Pooja finished 5th (or 4th?) in the final at Hangzhou by clearing 1.80 m. A 16 yr old clearing 1.80 m is absolutely incredible.

In men's and women's SC 3000m Avinash Sable and Parul have slim outside chances of medalling at Paris 2024, although I won't put my money on them yet.

We have been witnessing national records after national records across sprints for years now. We also have some excellent young 400 m runners; need to groom them properly.

2. Swimming: Our swimmers have been routinely breaking national records for some time now; even at the Asiad there were multiple national records. However, we are so far away from global standard that even national records are not enough to medal at major events. Anyway, we will get there at this rate. Shoan Ganguly, a teenager, bettered the national record mark at 400m individual medley at the Commonwealth Youth Games; that will give you the indication of upcoming depth in swimming. Unfortunately, absolutely nothing to show at diving or synchronized swimming yet.
Olympics is a very big step up from CWG and Asian games. Even making it that far is not easy let qkone consistently finishing in the top 10 there. Double digit Olympic medals will be a massive feat, much bigger than 100 asiad medals and not just because it will be unprecedented for us. We need at least 4-5 sports where we are in with a chance for gold/silver consistently and the only ones right now are compound archery - which isn't there in the Olympics - and Javelin. We are decent in many sports now which isn't quite good enough for Olympic medals and yjay includes sports where we have infra and depth already like weightlifting, boxing, wrestling, etc. In sprints and long distance running both the East and West African slave blood will be expected to win and quite rightly. Even in hockey and badminton we are not a lock for a medal despite being pretty good. Even today chinks blanked our women 4-0.

Two past US Olympic gymnasts were of Indian ethnicity (Raj Bhavsar and Mohini Bhardwaj). US Indian origin population is < 5 million.

I think as the Indian economy keeps growing, its only a matter of time in most of the remaining sports.

For now, it is just amazing that we have a few world top 10 level athletes. Even more at junior levels.

My favorite one, from the last Commonwealth games:

Cheenis have been good after RC and co joined their setup and today's match was actually very close; the scoreline does not reflect how competitive it actually was. I am more worried about the team selection; Rani Rampaul and Gurjit Kaur (the only true drag flicker) were left out and we could not convert PCs - the cheenis were giving out PCs after PCs in 3rd and 4th Q; any other team would destroy them.

We still have excellent depth in women's hockey; cheenis could not beat India in their last 11 encounters - this is their first victory in 12 matches against us. Perhaps JS and her support staffs have outlived their tenure; maybe the disastrous world cup campaign was an indication? Who knows, highly likely that JS will get the boot post Asiad debacle; Hockey India is unrelenting in this aspect. Last time out they booted out Harendra Singh after the men's team failed to clinch gold; Graham Reid was appointed shortly after and the rest is history.

Our junior women's team reached junior WC semi-final; something cheenis can only dream. Our depth is decent, perhaps a new tactician is needed. It will be a shame if we fail to qualify for Paris 2024 despite so much talent.

Men's team is more competitive and on par with the best in busineas. Although, very unpredictable at times; let us see what happens in the final.

In boxing we have improved a lot after Bernard Dunne was appointed the high performance director. Nonsense draws and those disgusting officials robbed us big time; it is a shame that our medal tally is not reflecting how good we have become. Had decent world championship outings as well.

Men's freestyle is in a bit of vacuum because Ravi Dahiya and Deepak got injured and Bajrang got too busy with politics. Aman is good; there is a reason why he is the reigning Asian champion - let us see how he fares from now on. Also hope Ravi is back just in time to make it into Paris 2024.

Our women's wrestling is slowly getting there; we topped the medals in U20 worlds ahead of Japan - no other country can do that. Antim is very good and can be a medal contender in Paris 2024.

As far as badminton goes, our men are decent; there is a reason why we are the reigning Thomas Cup champions. Our nonsense selection policy picked up Kidambi Srikanth instead of Priyanshu, MR Arjun's injury forced us to play with a makeshift MD2 pairing and even Prannoy got injured; else the cheenis would lose 0-3 to us in men's team - we still fought and they barely won by 3-2. SatChi are very good, ranked 3rd in the world and beat the WR 2 chinese pair in men's team final in china in front of home crowd. Not many pairs can do that. Last but not the least, the SENsational Lakshya Sen has been some revelation; hope he stays injury free till Paris 2024. Among youngsters Priyanshu Rajawat is slowly getting there and already ranks in top 30.

PV Sindhu participated in the Commonwealth games with an injury and that is now coming back to haunt her. She has not been at her best post injury. Some are saying that she is done for just like Kidambi and Saina. Maybe they are correct, who knows. Caroline Marin has made a good comeback after back to back ACL tears; hope Sindhu makes it.

WS junior has some depth do not expect them to start performing before 2026-27. WD and mixed doubles are our weakest links; specialist foreign coaches needed.

Frankly I really can't tell what's with this caste kanging. The first medal winner in wrestling for India was Kashaba Jadhav , a Maratha from western Maharashtra who won a bronze in the 1952 Helsinki Olympics.

Now western Maharashtra has a rich tradition of kushti in the Pune Satara Kolhapur axis that's not only existing but thriving till today. The saddest part is all this is done with local sponsorship minus any contribution or at least negligible ones from the government.

It's as if the wrestling federation of India has concluded their reservoir of talent doesn't cross Haryana . However I've yet to come across any Maratha ever blow his own trumpet in this regard.

It sort of mirrors their contribution to saving Hinduism beginning in western & southern India followed by all India . Asi Hinduon nu bachaya si - is something you'd never hear any ethnic Maharashtrian say . Even now it's me a non ethnic Maharashtrian who's highlighting this bit of information.

True marathi dhartiputras out here will be busy scratching their arse & looking the other way. That's the level of indifference & apathy amongst them & it's because of this we've false claimants to such a title.
