General purpose machine Gun (GPMG) in service with Para Special Forces (SF), SFF and others
Uses, Pros & Cons
=====
What is a GPMG ?
A GPMG is a belt fed Machine gun which is useful in many ways (multipurpose) and range of potential use. It can be use by Infantry, crews or can be mount on the vehicle and provide ground fire from Helicopter etc
The concept of GPMG was 1st introduced by the Germans between the inter war periods of World wars (WW). Before the introduction of GPMG the firepower of Infantry was based on HMG (Heavy machine Gun) and LMG (Light machine Gun). LMG provided the ability of automatic fire to the assaulting troops while the HMG provides suppressing fire to entrench troops, a post or fixed Position.

GPMG used by Indian Special Forces and non SF
(A)
PK/ PKM
Russian PK or Kalashnikov's MG is the most common GPMG use by Indian SF including Para Special Forces (SF). It's chambers for 7.62×54mmR round and reputed to be one of the best GPMG in service around the globe for it's ruggedness, reliability and weight
India also has it's Bulgarian variant made by Arsenal
Pros & Cons :-
1. It's light weight only 9 ~ kg which makes is excellent choice for long range foot patrols.
2. It uses a non disintegrating ammo belt which in a tactical situations could be an impediment.
3. Accuracy is good using old Soviet 7.62×54mmR
4. One major disadvantage of older and most widespead PK variant is that it can't mount Optics
5. Field striping and Barrel change is easy.
6. The variants with flutted barrel have faster cooling due to large surface area.
7. Slower rate of Fire than FN MAG

(B) FN MAG/ MAG 2A
This is another GPMG in service with Indian Special Forces and also with few State police.
It uses the completely different round which is 7.62 NATO belt fed and using a disintegrating belt.
Pros & Cons :-
1. Weighs heavy - 12 ~ kg compared to PKM. But this disadvantage is also it's advantage since heavy weight gives it softer recoil based on the fact that all things being equal a heavier gun have softer recoil.
2. Accuracy - Excellent especially from a mounted fixed position.
3. Unlike the old PK variants it can mount optics, with it inherent accuracy and on tripod mount & good Traverse and elevation (T&E) mechanism it provides excellent fire support
4. Powerful 7.62 NATO round disintegrating belt
5. Barrel change is easy since the Gunner don't have to expose while changing the barrel
6. Good rate of fire
