No bhai! CDO is commando, there's only 1 commando battalion in SFF i.e archers,

Like, earlier the SF units used the suffix 'commando' instead of SF,

9para (SF) earlier 9 para (CDO).

Ok i got you.

So its a commando to SF conversion like Para SF units but Archers still carry that tag.

@reddevil9

Excellent info. 1 Archer (Cdo) insignia - khukri with para chute wings is wholly appropriate.

@COLDHEARTED AVIATOR

Today 1 Archer is the only Indian Army unit with a commando designation. For trivia sake NSG also wears Commando tabs though. Apart from that CRPF COBRA units sport commando tabs as well.

Yes,it is a older version of SF title.

Commando is a term loosely used by many Police units in India.Anybody with a little extra training and a black patka or mask is called a Commando.

You are proving my point eventually!

Battalion size deployment like you rightly said is for Infantry.The SF deploys 100 to 120 men MAX!!This is the point to consider before comparing SF to a Special unit or Infantry.

West according to Indian Army lies around Rajasthan and Punjab.I would like to read about SG operations there.Kashmir is Northern Command according to Indian Army and also Geography.And Kashmir is mountains which is precisely the terrain SFF is raised for unlike the deserts of Rajasthan and Andamans where they cannot operate.

And as far as i know SF can operate anytime,any weather and anywhere!

Here are a list of wars which are short and crisp

War with China wont go for many months.(dont disregard weather and its Himalayas)

One would compare SSG efforts in 65 to a hypothetical situation of SFF being in Tibet because if you talk about a socitey on the whole you cannot expect them to be loyal to you.Hence when you do such kind of adventures there is a big chance of China loyalist giving the info to PLA and the operators being in danger.These kind of operations are very very risky and i am not ready to believe that all of Tibet is anti China.
We just saw even the Lama have a change of heart.

I really have no problem with SFF if we do not induct any more Tibetans.

I agree it is a elite unit,I agree it is a big weapon against China.I agree it should have its role against China.

My point is only that SFF should not have any refugees in it and i dont think why any patriotic Indian with a smart brain would have any sort of problem with this.

SF units are assets in war.If the intel is compromised of such units then they are gone.We cannot afford to trust anyone specially after what Lama is saying these days.

I am glad atleast the IA Generals have reduced the dependency on SFF.

Only wise men keep their options available.

P.S-Every guy on this thread i have had a debate with on SFF indirectly agrees that SFF should has less Tibetans...which is what i am trying to say!!
Battallions of SFF have different numbers and formation to regular infantry. They maintain a good number because of their caliber in HAW and there isn't another dedicated SF force that can conduct raids across the glacier into Pak on direct notice. While 9 Para is available, IA likes to keep Paras occupied with other types of missions in the Northern Command and there is plenty of work for them.

There is no doubt Para SF is the most versatile SF in the world but SFF is force raised for a reason that being to work as a elite force specializing in unconventional and guerilla warfare. As said, they already maintain an extensive netwrok of resistance fighters, guides, informants etc. which allows IA to keep a clear eye on Chinese moves in TAR. I am not suggesting that TAR locals need to be relied upon entirely and SFF isn't a naive force. Even a couple of thousand resistance fighters in guidance and leadership of the SFF can cause some serious havoc in TAR, which is all that is needed.

War with China will hardly be brief, if anything it will spiral out to well over a few months regardless of weather and terrain because Pak in certainty would use this conflict on the East to keep the West and the North active. Heck if Dokhlam or any of the recent brawls prove, it takes days before anybody can even mobilize. In the mountains, infantry battles are slow to dead slow, especially for China which is at a disadvantage in most areas. Sure, air battales will be swift initially but China is not the one to back down in this day and age, war could easily spill out of the East to high seas and potentially on our shores. To assume any war with China would be limited to the east is silly all the while it's little jihadi piglet to the West is ready to move anytime they want.

His holiness has no other option but to stay loyal to India and same for the Tibetans who long for a free-Tibet, they know India is the best bet. If India expels his holiness and his followers, he wouldn't live a week, neither would their cause.

You keep bringing them up as refugees, rather today of SFF, they are Indians, born in the country. Today's force is but a shadow of the past. Such a logic is not needed, if this is the case should we get rid of the Nepali Gurkhas as well then?

Not all SFs in the world are all weather and terrain capable. While Israeli SF units are elite, they hardly have any serious training in mountain warfare for instance when compared to Indian standards of training in mountain warfare.

SFF is one of many options whether you consider them elite infantry or as I consider them a crack guerilla commando force, they would be very useful in all scenarios. I am not aware of the break-up of the force with regards to Tibetan Indians but the guiding pricipal for getting new recruits into the force should be quality of the candidate be it a Tibetan Indian, Gurkha, Bodo, Assami, Gharwali or Hyderabadi for that matter.

First let them become a proper police force. Then we can upgrade them to swat level.
But even the current government hasn't laid down any policy to improve police force I wonder if would happen any time soon
