BTW, I see the muzzle brake and flash suppressor at the end of the barrel - so I would presume there is not provision for a silencer or are they interchangeable

Re: Snipers matching fire with fire.

Kunal - Vidhwanshak is not a true sniper weapon, its an anti-material rifle which can be used for sniper operations from preset positions.
For counter sniper operations, it is too heavy to be carried around easily. It neutralizes the mobility of the sniper team.
Even the Dragunov is not a true sniper system. It is more of a marksman rifle.

The most important aspect of sniper/counter sniper operations is training. Do we have dedicated sniper training institutions in India?

Also, what is the model applied in Indian operations? Do we employ two man sniper/spotter teams with interchangeable roles?

IMO, we need something like this combined with better dedicated sniper training and support equipment such as night scopes and spotting equipment.

how can you say dragunov is not a true sniper rifle. it has an excellent track record and it is responsible for taking down many of the infiltrators in J&K region. it scored some shots in the earlier fire exchange when 6 pakies were killed and 2 indian soldiers attained martyrdom

Who ever told you that it use is lesser is dead wrong, Its use is extensive in CT areas in J&K by Army, So does its use in remote outpost manned by BSF..

Regarding portable 50cal rifle is gepard gm6 lynx used by PARA SF..

12.7×108mm

12.7x99mm

12.7×108mm most probably in use coz 12.7x108mm is manufactured by OFB..

Hi Kunal i did go through the pages from 1 - 8 and i came to a conclusion that india do not have a proper sniper training institute like the ones in America those are class apart can the indian forces take help from isreal in setting up a world class sniper training school in india so that we can produce world class snipers if we consider the modern warfare it is Urban Warfare in those cases snipers are must and the need of the good sniper is proved in American invasion of Afghan and Iraq........ can't we indians learn from others the need for the Snipers

there is a saying that " A smart person learns from his failures and a genius learns from others failure. "

I provided the link just to list other cartridges between .30 and .50 caliber that might be used by snipers. I know little or nothing about Indian snipers.

Its upto the top brass, Though PARA SF have dedicated Sniper teams trained in US and other places..

If Army decide that it should have such dedicated school than i am sure it will be..

There are dozens of tactics and equipment we can induct into our force by learning from other and adopt into our environment..
