For a long time one of the most coveted posts in the Indian Cabinet has been the Railway Minister's post. This is one post where the most poppulous decisions can be made without any thought to the condition of the exchequesr, the travelling condition of the current travellers, the current condition of the rolling stock, the antiquated signalling system and the condition of the tracks.

The only thing certain about a Railway Minister is that every year he/she will announce dozens of new trains( mostly from his constituency-- to hell with the rest of the country)ozens of new projects. Come the next budget similar annoucements will be made but there will be no mention of the status of the projects announced in the previous years.

Admittedly IR is doing a Yeoman's job in transporting millions of people everyday at comparitively very cheap prices. But is this the only job of the railways. New Technologies have been absorbed very slowly. The growth in Number of Kilometers of Track has been very slow. Parts of India, J&K, North East and some parts of South India are still very poorly connected by Trains.

More people die on unmanned crossings daily than they die in Railway crashes. After thousands of such crashes, dozens of expert committees, crores of Rupees spent the situation is still the same.
thank you .

Railways to Install CCTV in Ladies' Compartments

NEW DELHI: The Railway Ministry has decided to install CCTVs in ladies' compartments in phases in order to provide enhanced security to women passengers, the Rajya Sabha was told on Friday. Responding to a query during the Question Hour in Rajya Sabha, Railway Minister Sadananda Gowda said, "We will do it phase- wise. We have already decided on this." The Minister was responding to a question from filmstar-turned- politician Jaya Bachchan on whether the government was mulling installing closed-circuit television in ladies' compartments. Gowda also said 4,000 more posts of women Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel were being sanctioned to provide enahnced security to women passengers. Besides, eight sanctioned Mahila Vahinis (women RPF companies) would be recruited. The Railways have a three-tier security mechanism of RPF, Government Railway Police (GRP) and District Police. RPF supplements the efforts of GRPs to ensure protection and security of railway property and passengers among others. The job of the district police is to ensure security of tracks, bridges and tunnels. Replying to a query on security mechanism in railways, Gowda said, "At present an average of 3,275 trains are being escorted by RPF and GRPs. Almost all existing vacancies in RPF are being filled. This will enable us to strengthen existing escorts and to escort another 1,500 vulnerable trains."

KOCHI: In what could be a major boost to the infrastructure of Kochi, the Railways is eying to set up an automobile storage and export unit at the Mattancherry wharf here. The proposal, mooted by the Railway Board, has been brought before the Cochin Port Trust (CPT) for discussion. The Mattancharry wharf belongs to the CPT, and boasts of a railway line. On Thursday, the Railway Board's infrastructure advisor Gireesh Pillai visited the proposed site, and told the Railway officials to earmark the space available for the Railways to join hands with the CPT to start the plant. According to Railway sources, the wharf that is connected by a railway line can bring in automobiles and automotive parts from the other parts of the country. From there, the automobiles can be transported by ship to the African countries. "Currently, Africa is a good market for Indian products, especially automobiles. Many Chinese products have failed to catch the African market, unlike the Indian products that have a good market there. Officials said that Kochi was the ideal location for setting up the unit," the sources added. Also, since the Railways is having dedicated containers to transport automobiles the project could be successful. Railway officials claimed that many automobile companies had expressed interest. Meanwhile, the officials noted that the project plan was only at the initial stage. "However, if there is sufficient willpower and if the Cochin Port Trust is also interested the project it could become a reality, the officials added.
