RDSO's Carriage Directorate gives its 'final Nod' to run Double-decker trains

Source : rail | RailNews | Page 2
The French TGV Duplex also is a double decker train. It is mind boggling how well they manage to run it at very high speeds. I hope we will reach the vicinity of 250 kmph with our double deckers one day.

All Set for India's First High Speed Train - The New Indian Express

AGRA: The decks have been cleared for the launch of India's first high speed train that will link New Delhi and the Taj city of Agra -- in 105 minutes. An official statement here said the coaches for Gatiman Express had reached New Delhi from Kapurthala in Punjab. Two successful trials have been held July 3 and Sep 11. When the service starts, the train will leave the national capital at 8 a.m. and reach Agra Cantt railway station at 9.45 a.m. It will depart Agra at 5.30 p.m. and reach New Delhi at 7.15 p.m. The coaches will have automatic sliding doors -- a la Delhi Metro. An official said that it was now for the railway ministry to decide the date for the inaugural run.

It's high time that the railways began phasing out doorless trains with automatic door trains... that is first thing in safety.. unless the train stops the door should not open. Very important from safety point of view. instead of trying for bullet or rocket trains, railways needs to begin investing on safety first. For eg... it would be a good beginning to run all express trains with coaches that remain shut when in motion. High time the Mumbai local trains have automatic doors.

Sreedharan panel to vet all railway contracts

All tenders to be approved by the railway minister or railway board would be examined by the E Sreedharan panel, which was set up to suggest ways to infuse transparency in the functioning of the transport behemoth. The panel has asked railways to submit the details of all tenders under finalization or at the invitation stage, which are to be cleared by the minister or board.

The move is aimed at studying the existing tendering process so that the one-man committee can suggest ways to streamline procurement and tendering process as part of the government's push for reforming the transporter. The move has created panic among a section of officials as they fear probe if the panel found any aberration or abuse of official position to favour a particular company or individual.

A senior official in the railways board secretariat said, "Most of the departments have submitted the details." In recent past, investigative agencies found cases of "tailor-made" specifications in the tendering process to favour a private company, he said. Irregularities in booking of wagons and coaches due to opaque procedures have also come to light.

Soon after taking over, railway minister Suresh Prabhu asked former Delhi Metro Rail Corporation (DMRC) chief E Sreedharan to advise on ways to infuse transparency in systems and procedures.

He was asked to suggest "proper system and procedure to ensure proper accountability and transparency" at the level of General Manager (GM) and other functionaries for taking all commercial decisions.

The panel was appointed amid indication of massive reforms being worked out in the railways to attract private and foreign investment for the mega projects and infuse transparency and openness after Prabhu took over. There was a realization that widespread corruption and manipulation had discouraged private players to invest in rail infrastructure.

Prabhu had indicated that decisions on tender have to be taken at the level of GMs of railway zones. Helping railways put in place systems for delegation of such responsibilities to GMs is one of the terms of reference of the newly-formed committee.

Also, I would want to see the 'Swachch Bharat' extended to the Railways... Hygiene would be a good beginning for the Railways.... and a change into more secure and safe station designs that would keep out unwanted elements. For that the design will have to change into closed one, instead of the present open design.

And won't it be a good beginning for the railways to keep out the wandering cows/dogs/beggars/unauthorised hawkers from railway stations?

Hyderabad: In a technological breakthrough, Hyderabad Metro Rail (HMR) operated a train in automatic mode for the first time in the country. The test run of a metro train in Automatic Train Operation (ATO) mode was conducted from Nagole to Mettuguda here on Tuesday night. Under ATO mode, a train operates on its own and self controls its movement, speed, performance, with automatic application of brakes without intervention of the driver, a release from the HMR said today. "The function of the driver is only to press a button to close the doors at stations and it is a prelude to completely driverless mode which Hyderabad Metro can upgrade to anytime it wants," it said. HMR is the first Indian metro project that is implementing Communication-Based Train Control (CBTC) signalling system, supplied by French company Thales. The system controls movement of trains through continuous two- way digital communication between trains and trackside equipment, the release said. HMR is being developed as one of the largest modern transport systems in the world based upon PPP model. The 72-km elevated project will have three corridors and 66 stations. Construction and engineering major L&T is executing the project. By March, stage one, an 8-km stretch from Nagole to Mettuguda, will become operational.

Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu to launch first CNG train from Rewari tomorrow

In what could be considered as a milestone in adoption of green fuel in Indian Railways, the first CNG train will be launched tomorrow on Rewari-Rohtak section of Northern zone.

Based on the dual fuel system - diesel and CNG - the train will be flagged off by Railway Minister Suresh Prabhu from Rewari, a senior Railway Ministry official.

Introduction of CNG trains will reduce greenhouse gas emission by the Railways and also the consumption of diesel.

Prabhu has given emphasis on the use of alternative fuel in train operation including use of solar and wind power to reduce dependence on conventional energy.
Railways have modified the 1,400 HP engine to run on dual fuel - diesel and CNG - through fumigation technology.

The Rewari passenger train will consume over 20 per cent of the CNG, covering 81 km long distance in about two hours. Railways had earlier conducted a trial run in the section. According to the official, there are plans to run more such CNG trains in due course to reduce diesel consumption.

The train comprising of two power cars and six car coaches has been manufactured by Integral Coach Factory at Chennai with the CNG conversion kit being supplied by Cummins.

Development of a CNG conversion technology which will permit utilisation of over 60 per cent CNG is also underway, he said, adding "switch over to LNG technology is also being planned as that will enable higher fuel carrying capacity."

Besides Rewari-Rohtak, Prabhu will also launch another passenger service between Rewari and Bikaner as announced in the Rail Budget 2014-15.
