Why ro make heavy , and train 18 use some parts as aluminum not like korean trainsets
Not heavy trains per se, but heavy coaches. Why? Lets look at some numbers here.

One passenger coach on an average carry 90 passengers on a good day. If we count average weight of each passenger to be around 40 kg, it makes a weight of 3 tons+ per coach. With a 24 coach train, the total weight carried by a passenger train comes at around 86 ton. And remember, this is only a safe weight estimate, that too only of passenger. Add up the luggage and other accessories and you are going to breach the 100 ton mark easily on daily basis.
Now when hauling such a huge huge load, the worldwide trend is to go for CO-CO configuration in locos rather then BO-BO like ours. Since we do use BO-BO configuration, the added weight helps to maintain traction on rail. So inspite of being a drawback, it is a necessity for us.

Now coming to aluminum coaches. I am sure you might have heard about the Talgo train trial failure in India. In trial it was found to generate huge vibration at higher speed apart from being incompatible with the existing platform height. Now platform height incompatibility has nothing to do with being made of aluminum or steel, but the vibration has sure to do with the material used.
If you have compared the bogie structure of IR with other high speed trains, you might have seen that we make use of non articulated bogies as opposed to articulated ones of high speed train. Now we could make use of articulated bogies in certain routes on some special trains, but overall articulated bogie design is not fit for IR.
So on the existing rail infra, where we are bound to run non articulated bogies based coach, heavier coaches are the only way forward. We could go for Aluminum coach trains on certain routes on special basis, but leaving the traditional route as of now would not be economically viable.

So you see, the coaches might not be like the Korean train set, but on an average IR carries half of Korean population on daily basis. So if you introduce those coaches in IR, they would simply buckle down. So a coach comprising stainless steel car carriage with aluminum composite, just like Train18, is far better then a aluminum coach in our context.

Indian Railways on way to become "Largest Green Railways" in the world with Zero Carbon Emission

Railways looks at helping the environment with steps ranging from massive electrification, water & paper conservation, to saving animals from being injured on Railway tracks

39 Workshops, 7 Production Units, 8 Loco Sheds and one Stores depot have been ‘GreenCo’ certified; These include 2 Platinum, 15 Gold and 18 Silver ratings

19 Railway Stations have also achieved Green Certification including 3 Platinum, 6 Gold and 6 Silver ratings

27 Railway Buildings, Offices, Campuses and other establishments are also Green certified including 15 Platinum, 9 Gold and 2 Silver ratings

600 Railway Stations have been certified for implementation of the Environment Management System to ISO: 14001 in the last two years

Posted On: 04 JUN 2021 3:59PM by PIB Delhi

Indian Railways (IR) is working in mission mode to become the largest Green Railways in the world and is moving towards becoming a “net zero carbon emitter” before 2030. Railways is guided by a holistic vision of being an environment friendly, efficient, cost effective, punctual and a modern carrier of passengers as well as freight in order to serve the growing needs of New India. IR is looking at helping the environment with steps ranging from massive electrification, water & paper conservation, to saving animals from being injured on Railway tracks.
Railway Electrification which is environment friendly and reduces pollution, has increased nearly ten times since 2014. Capturing the economic benefits of electric traction in an accelerated manner, Railways has planned to electrify balance Broad Gauge (BG) routes by December, 2023 to achieve 100% electrification of BG routes. Head-On-Generation systems, Bio-Toilets and LED lights recreate the train itself into a travel mode that’s kinder to the environment while maintaining comparable passenger comfort.
IR’s Dedicated Freight Corridors are being developed as a low carbon green transportation network with a long-term low carbon roadmap, which will enable it to adopt more energy efficient and carbon-friendly technologies, processes and practices. IR is implementing two Dedicated Freight Corridor projects viz. Eastern Corridor (EDFC) from Ludhiana to Dankuni (1,875 km) and Western Corridor (WDFC) from Dadri to Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (1,506 km). Sonnagar-Dankuni (538 km) portion of EDFC has been planned for execution on Public Private Partnership (PPP) mode.
IR’s network and reach enabled movement of Freight, like Food Grains & Oxygen in pandemic, even while being more environment friendly as compared to Road transport. During the period April 2021 to May 2021, the Indian Railways moved 73 Lakh tonnes of food grains and has run 241 loaded Oxygen express trains, moving 922 loaded tankers, thereby transporting 15,046 tonnes of oxygen to various part of the country.
Green Certifications and implementation of Environment Management System:
MoU signed between IR and Confederation of Indian Industry in July 2016 for facilitation of Green initiatives on IR. 39 Workshops, 7 Production Units, 8 Loco Sheds and one Stores depot have been ‘GreenCo’ certified. These include 2 Platinum, 15 Gold and 18 Silver ratings.
Green certification mainly covers assessment of parameters having direct bearing on the environment, such as, energy conservation measures, use of renewable energy, Green House Gas emission reduction, water conservation, waste management, material conservation, recycling etc. 19 Railway Stations have also achieved Green Certification including 3 Platinum, 6 Gold and 6 Silver ratings. 27 more Railway Buildings, Offices, Campuses and other establishments are also Green certified including 15 Platinum, 9 Gold and 2 Silver ratings. In addition, over 600 Railway Stations have been certified for implementation of the Environment Management System to ISO: 14001 in the last two years. A total of 718 stations have been identified for ISO : 14001 certification.
Indian Railways has incorporated Climate Change features in its own risk assessments and disaster management protocols. As an organisation ready to manage the risks, and ask the right questions about its assets, routes & investments. Top management in IR’s many public sectors have been communicating with stakeholders for a shared understanding, needed for long-term health and sustainability of the organisations they lead.
The Environment Sustainability Report published by IR and subsidiary units each year sets up a framework document defining strategies and focus points in the context of climate change, the issues at stake, and steps for dealing with them. It helps railways to support government commitments such as the Paris agreement on climate change, the UN Sustainable Development Goals and National Disaster Management Plans.
Wide ranging experiences of engineers, operators and planners in different zones & construction units of the Indian Railways constantly face different challenges. Some sophisticated approaches by international asset managers, railway operators, rolling stock engineers, scenario planners and others are studied through consultancy reports. Appropriate interpretation matching the IR’s own realities and ground situation suitably adapts the efforts of departmental managers in anticipating and facing up to those challenges.

Train 18 is made up of Aluminum, composites and FRP.

But if you look at Indian Railway, we can't afford to make lightweight locos or coaches. By design we have to make them heavy.
How about we make them for export? Our people can't even stop shitting while the train is at station....our folks don't seem to respect property that is not theirs for instance in AirIndia flights, atleast 25% of headphone hacks, reclining and so on simply is broken or needs repair and same with trains...why give people something good if they are not civilized enough? Also we need to first fig out solution so shit does not come onto the track in all trains and focus high value ones on some segments with an eye towards export

It is about time but govt or IR can only do so much....from cleanliness pov, the new education report 2021 should incorporate hygience and social sense with specific instances right from elementary all the way into professional and work places to remind people. I have seen people crapping all over on toilets and seen the same thing in ordinary chinese trains but a bit better compared to ours

Correct, why give them something they can't and wont respect anyway? I can understand certain sections of population that spits and does whatever without a thought mostly coming from underdeveloped parts but ones that have formal education and what not also do the same thing...atleast smoking inside the trains and spitting inside on door corners kinda went down in most zones

I was thinking about costa of land acquisition and additional costs , say for example the track on a particular section us way too curvier ,is it possible that we buy a portion of land near it so the curve us straighten up a d sell off the older land where track was ,as the ttack is straightening , the land required will be less but the land sold would be more ,so we may cover cost of displacement of all track related items .

So almost free of cost our track are rrady for somewhat higher speed .

So as per @Chinmoy quoted ,we may use articulated bogies on longer track routes .

Our tracks are over exploited ,we run trains more than capacity on various section , this thing need to sorted out ,dfi will reduce our load but still not enough

Actually there are standards and codes on the frequency of curves in a given distance and type of terrain and what not.....also lot of railway land is encroached over time too and ballast stolen and what not. My uncle used to be CE in South Central zone and Western I think. Our signaling system was also antique but recently some upgrades occurred to bring it to modern standards, HSR is the way to move forward for a dense country like India as the incomes are going up or take it underground and pay upfront, they scale better than air traffic but expensive....anything that involves land is a complicated topic as the zonal code and regulations are never respected in India and those who administer are as crude and incompetent as a donkey and that is insulting donkey

Safety and security is one of the priority areas by Indian Railways. Apart from safety and security of passengers, Railway Protection Force (RPF) has contributed in a big way during Covid-19 in Indian Railways efforts to sustain its fight against the virus. During the pandemic, RPF remained on the forefront of Indian Railway’s efforts like security of parked rolling stock, providing food to the needy, escorting all Shramik Special trains, handling 45 deliveries and about 34 medical emergencies in Shramik Specials.

RPF has formulated a special plan ‘Reach out, secure and rehabilitate’ for protecting Covid orphans. RPF has initiated a drive to identify children in distress at station/in trains or in nearby towns/villages/hospitals orphaned due to Covid. The staff is sensitized to provide special attention to the children impacted due to the spread of pandemic COVID-19. People in the nearby areas and passengers visiting stations are sensitized regarding the services and facilities available nearby for children in distress situations. One nodal RPF personnel for each child is responsible from the time the child is secured to the time of his/her rehabilitation.

Many incidents of RPF personnel risking their own lives while saving the precious lives at stations were reported. 9 Jeewan Raksha Medals and 01 Gallantry Medal awarded to RPF personnel by Hon’ble President of India since 2018 for saving lives.

Induction of ladies in large number in RPF gave impetus to Indian Railway’s efforts to improve women security. Recruitment of 10568 vacancies in RPF was completed in 2019. After CBT, PET/PMT, Document verification, Medical examination and Police verification, recruitment was concluded. The percentage of women in RPF prior to recruitment was 3% (2312), post recruitment, it is 9% (6242). RPF is the central force having highest share of women in its ranks.

Meri Saheli initiative launched by RPF from 17th Oct. 2020 across zones has given focused attention to women travelling alone in long distance trains. A team of young lady RPF personnel interact with them at originating station, en-route till terminating station.

Security of Female passengers has been upgraded by RPF by formation of Special Lady Squads like Bhairvi, Virangna, Shakti. Escorting of all ladies special trains in metro cities and local trains by RPF is being ensured. Focused deployment during late night and early morning local trains. Gender sensitization / passenger awareness programmes are carried out regularly. Continuous drives against offenders travelling in ladies coaches is a regular exercise by RPF personnel. About 129500 (from 2019 to 2021 up to May) male passengers traveling in ladies coaches were arrested under section 162 of Railway Act and prosecuted by RPF.

RPF has played an important role in the rescue of children. Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) finalized in consultation with Ministry of Women and Child Development (MWCD). Child Help Desks manned by nominated NGOs functional at 132 stations till 2020. Total 56318 children have been rescued from 2017 up to May2021. Total 976 Children rescued from traffickers, from 2018 up to May 2021.

RPF continues to assist passengers in order to make their journey comfortable. Grievance redressal, recovery of left over luggage and security related calls are some of the key areas where RPF plays an active role.

Total 22835 cases (from 2019 up to May 2021) of left over luggage containing items valued Rs 37.13 Crores restored to rightful owners. Total 37275 genuine security related calls in last two years (2019-20) received on All India Railway Security Helpline 182 and redressed. Helpline 182 was merged with 139 RailMadad w.e.f. 01.04.2021. 8258 security related 139 calls redressed in April and May 2021.

Railway Flood Relief Team (RFRT)- An RPF disaster relief initiative has been launched for reaching out and providing succor to passengers stranded in trains due to flooding. The Team can carry water, food, medicines etc. It works in close coordination with other rescue and relief agencies and on a well laid out SOP. 15 RPF men/women trained by NDRF and 75 more being trained. 05 Motorised inflatable boats with safety equipments procured and stationed at 05 vulnerable locations. It can team up with Civil Administration for such operations outside Railway also.

On a mission mode to become "Future Ready", Railways is on it's way to deliver 58 super critical and 68 critical projects worth more than Rs 115000 crore in next few years.

Inspite of Covid challenges, Indian Railways is going on rapidly to complete the projects which are vital for increasing the capacity of tracks.

29 Super Critical Projects of total length 1,044 Km costing Rs 11,588 Cr got commissioned in last 1 year.

Indian Railways identified total 58 Super Critical Projects of a total length of 3750 km costing Rs 39663 Crore.Out of these total 58 Super Critical Projects, 27 projects will be completed by December 2021 while remaining 02 projects will be handed over by March 2022.

It may be noted that most of the traffic of Indian Railways moves on Indian Railway network on Golden Quadrilateral, High Density Network routes & Highly Utilized Network routes. The high density & highly utilized network routes constitute 51% route length of the Indian Railways network but carries 96% of traffic.

Based on traffic density, type of commodity moved, importance of route from strategic considerations etc. the projects requiring urgent expansion including those which are already progressing well (expenditure already more than 60%) have been categorized as Super Critical projects (58 nos) and the projects requiring completion in next stage have been defined as Critical projects (68 nos). All are civil projects (Includes all related electrification and signalling works also).

By focussed funding and continuous monitoring these projects are targeted for early completion to reap the benefits of investment. On completion these projects will improve mobility, safety and create additional capacity for running more passenger and freight trains on these saturated and busy routes. Higher priority has been given in allocation of budget for these identified projects for early completion.

Super Critical Projects:

58 super critical projects of a total length of 3750 km costing Rs 39663 Cr have been identified. These supercritical projects are projects of multi-tracking i.e. doubling/3rd line/4th line on busy routes. With completion of these projects, Railways will be able to move more traffic at faster speed with safety on these dense/saturated/busy traffic routes. Till now, 29 projects of total length 1,044 Km costing Rs 11,588 Cr have been commissioned. 27 projects will be completed by December 2021 and balance 02 projects by March 2022.

Critical Projects:

68 critical projects of total length 6913 km costing Rs 75736 Cr have been identified and out of these 04 projects of 108 Km length costing Rs 1408 Cr have been completed till date and balance projects are targeted to be completed by March 2024.

68 critical projects - anticipated cost Rs 75736 Cr (around 76,000 Cr) out of which 37734 (around Rs 38000 Cr) has been spent till March 21. Outlay for this year is Rs 14466 Cr (around 15000 Cr). 4 projects have been completed till now.

Indian Railways has commissioned 1614 Km Doubling/ 3rd/ 4th line during FY 2020-21 despite Pandemic COVID-19. Despite the Pandemic situation again Indian Railways has commissioned 133 km doubling/ 3rd line till now, during FY 2021-22.

Indian Railways delivered some key capacity building projects in States like Assam, West Bengal, Maharashtra and Uttarakhand. A few of them are as follows:-

1) Assam -

Commissioning of second line track on Naranarayan Setu on Brahmaputra river of New Bongaigaon-Guwahati section, which will provide great relief on this section.

2) West Bengal -

A) In May’2021, Indian Railways has commissioned part of two doubling projects i.e. Katwa- Bazar Sau and Azimganj-Bazar Sau in West Bengal despite Pandemic COVID-19 and State Election.

B) Katwa- Bazar Sau and Azimganj-Bazar Sau: Both the doubling of this line is very important in view of traffic moving from Barddhaman to/ from Sahibganj for movement of coal for NTPCs TPS i.e. Farakka Super Thermal Power Station and Katwa Super Thermal Power Station (Under construction).

3) Maharashtra -

In June’21, Indian Railways has commissioned a Super Critical project Bhusaval-Jalgaon 3rd line in Maharashtra, which will remove bottleneck of this section and provided much much relief for operation of train service in Manmad-Khandwa and Bhusaval-Udhna section.

4) Uttarakhand -

Haridwar-Laksar Doubling: After commissioning (in Jan’21) of this section entire route from National Capital New Delhi to Haridwar via Meerut, Muzaffarnagar & Roorkee has become double line. It will improve punctuality on this busy route.

After completion of the above Supercritical & Critical projects, more line capacity will be available for smooth movement of passenger and freight traffic on congested routes, increase speed of trains, introduction of new train service, increased safety as maintenance margins on these busy routes will become available.
