Now, state cops want aircraft, five choppers
AHMEDABAD: After ridding high on superbikes, the state police are all set to fly high. Senior police officials say they have worked out a proposal to procure five helicopters and one small aircraft as part of the police modernization project.
Once the proposal is accepted by the government, Gujarat police will be able to procure the helicopters and the aircraft very soon. Sources from the Police Bhavan in Gandhinagar said the state police had formed a committee to study the specifications for the helicopter and the aircraft. "The state police will get five single-engine helicopters and a small aircraft. The committee is studying the specifications, price and models," said a senior police official. The helicopter would play an important role in emergency situations for surveillance as well as operational functions. "In similar situations, the aircraft would be used to reach distant places by the police," said police officials.
Police officials said the helicopter and the aircraft could also be used in case of natural calamities. "We can shift people from affected areas till help from disaster management agencies arrives," added police officials.
Soon, the state cops will get 20 superbikes to be sued for chasing criminals and escort service. "Seven of these bikes — with engine displacement ranging from 750cc to 1000cc — are likely to procured before Vibrant Gujarat Summit," said senior police officials
