Delhi Police to bid adieu to 7,000 British era .303 rifles
New Delhi, Nov 18 (PTI) The British era .303 rifles, which remained a part of the Delhi Police for decades, will soon be retired from the force, according to a senior officer.

According to the Delhi Police, at least 7,000 such firearms, better known as three-nought-three rifles, are set to be dismantled by the force.

The use of these weapons came to an end years back and they are ready for dismantling,” the officer said.
These .303 rifles are kept at the armoury unit of the Delhi Police.

According to sources, a Joint Commissioner rank officer has been appointed to oversee the dismantling of these weapons. The whole operation will be done under the supervision of a committee set by the Ministry of Home Affairs.

The .303 calibre Lee-Enfield rifles were initially manufactured in UK arms factory, and extensively used in World War I and II. In India, these rifles were used by the Indian army during the Indo-China war in 1962 and later handed over to the state forces.

Deputy Commissioner of Police (Provisioning and Logistics) Vinit Kumar confirmed that the weapons were up for dismantling.

Another officer said, the process of dismantling of these weapons, each of which weighs approximately 5 kg, is lengthy, and involves removal and destruction of each part. Before they are destroyed, the barrel and the body parts are separated, so that it cannot be further used. The iron from the firearm is melted.

“The procurement of the cartridges of these guns was stopped soon after the force decided to end the service of these weapons. Therefore, there is no ammunition left for these guns,” an officer said.

The Delhi Police currently has SLR, INSAS, and AK47 for long range, 9 mm Glock pistol, revolvers for short range, and JVPC and MP5 as machine guns, which are used during special operations.

An officer said that the old sten guns, a relic from the World War, will also be soon dismantled. A huge chunk of these guns is kept in the armoury.

“Once these rifles get dismantled, sten guns will be next,” the officer added.

Many state forces, including Uttar Pradesh and Maharashtra, have already retired the.303 rifles.

The Mumbai Police had decided to replace these guns soon after the 26/11 attack, when its personnel had a confrontation with terrorists armed with much sophisticated AK 47.

Police Use Drones and Helicopters to Pursue Maoists in Kambamala
The Kerala Police have taken to aerial patrolling as a strategic approach to monitor human activities within the Kannavam-Kambamala-Brahmagiri forest area. This decision follows the recent sighting of Maoist cadres at a tea plantation in Kambamala, Wayanad.

In recent days, the district police have been experimenting with drone-based surveillance and are now planning to incorporate helicopters into their efforts. The primary objective is to relay critical information regarding Maoist movements to on-field commandos who have been diligently scouring the jungles for any signs of the group’s presence.

Padam Singh, the Wayanad District Police Chief, noted that ground-level combing operations have not produced the desired outcomes. Consequently, the state police is contemplating a joint operation with law enforcement in Tamil Nadu and Karnataka to address this growing security concern.

Nevertheless, adverse weather conditions have hindered some of these aerial efforts, as evidenced by a helicopter’s return to Areekode after reaching the Wayanad Engineering College ground at 3.25 pm. Notably, a team of high-ranking officers, including DIG (Special Operations) Putta Vimaladithya, DIG (Kannur Range) Thomson Jose, and Superintendent of Police (Special Operations) Shahul Hameed, were transported to Wayanad via helicopter, indicating the seriousness of the situation.

The Maoist cadres have been making repeated visits to Kambamala since their attack on the Kerala Forest Development Corporation (KFDC) office on September 28. Reports on Onmanorama.com have documented the activities of a five-member group in Kambamala, which include acts like destroying surveillance cameras and allegedly assaulting a worker. In response, plantation workers staged a strike on October 5, demanding protection against the Maoist threat.

ADGP North Zone MR Ajithkumar recently visited Kambamala and engaged in discussions with special branch agents, plantation workers, and senior police officers in the district. Meanwhile, the Thunderbolt commandos, an elite force established by the Indian government following the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, continue to maintain a presence in Thalappuzha, conducting regular combing operations in the forested region.

Recognizing the urgency, the police have also deployed additional patrolling teams in Kambamala to ensure the safety of workers during the night shift. The situation remains fluid, and the success of aerial search operations largely depends on favorable weather conditions, with the police determined to address the Maoist threat in the region.

Jammu & Kashmir Police is inviting bids for tender to hire choppers for faster mobility
A tender has been floated by Jammu & Kashmir police to lease 3 lightweight helicopters for a duration of 3 years.

Jammu and Kashmir Police have floated a tender to invite bids from registered aviation companies as the department will soon rent helicopters for faster mobility of its forces. The same was confirmed by an official. “Flight operations are required for carrying police officers and central armed paramilitary force (CAPF) officials in all sectors of J-K, as well as for other emergent purposes,” J&K Police said. The tender is floated to hire a minimum of three light helicopters, which will be used to fly in Jammu & Kashmir by the police on a ‘leave and license' basis. These helicopters will be hired for a period of three years.

The J&K Police will lease the choppers from January 16, 2023, to January 16, 2026, officials said. Officials also said the helicopters will be integrated in the 'disaster management plan (DMP)' and 'emergency response plan (ERP)' being prepared by the police.

"All the helicopters at Srinagar and Jammu helipad will be integrated into the ERP," officials said.

The operations will be carried out daily with the least inconvenience to the police subject to fair weather conditions and clear visibility of the range, it said, adding that the company will offer at least two airworthy double engine light helicopters.

The company shall be required to park one operating helicopter at Srinagar -Jammu helipad as per the requirement. The operator should be in a position to put immediately in place an additional stand by helicopter in the event of an emergency, it added.
