I agree to yopur point but critical developments were done by Caesar, expanded the number of legions in the Roman army, increasing its overall size and capability for conquest and defense.
Hain?

Caesar ?
Marius. The Marian reforms that replaced the Triari and Triplex Aces of Phalanx like Maniples with the Gladius wielding heavy infantry of the cohorts.

oh yes
The antiquity empires, Rome, Han, Mauryan, Sassanian Persia all had standing armies.

Once those antiquity empires were destroyed - thanks to the Mongols, the Huns and the Muslims, standing armies became a thing of the past.
Primarily because centralization needed with the bureacracy to run an empire, and have funds enough to afford a standing army numbering hundreds of thousands strong was no longer possible.

That continued till the gunpowder revolution and their standing armies, which broke down in turn and led to chaos - of the post Aurangzeb period in India.

There is a wondrous book on the subject of why in history, empires were cyclical.

Powerful empires would form, only to be fall, and then reform and fall again -

"War: What is it good for?" by Ian Morris. Give it a read. Damn good book.
Thanks, mate. You the man. I'll try to get my hands of that book ASAP.

I knew somewhat that the main reforms done were during Ceaser's lifetime, but ok you got that right, it was Marius who made the legions into a formidible fighting force

Cheering for L&T ? Navantia is there to make up the numbers. This tender is for TKMS to lose or some Black Swan event to throw a spanner in the works. I'm betting technical evaluation by IN will be savage on Navantia - L&T combine .
I still don't understand what they hope to gain with this program. Why not just a bigger upgraded Scorpène with DRDO AIP.

TKMS sub only makes sense if they aren't confident in DRDO AIP and want German AIP tech. Maybe they are also looking for Li ion battery tech or stealth and quieting tech as well.

Primary idea is to set up a parallel and independent submarine line in India apart from the MDL line. (And the SBC line)

Objective as far as I understand is to have an intermediate class of submarines of bigger tonnage & better endurance between the Scorpenes meant for littoral patrol & defence to the SSNs which will patrol the oceans & perform escort duties for our CBGs.

This intermediate class of submarines is expected to patrol the seas upto the chokepoints of the Straits of Hormuz & the Bab el Mendeb on a regular basis & be part of our war plans if need be.

Why not just stay with the Scorpene design. The Brazil Riachuelo class and Spanish S80 are basically just bigger Scorpene. Changing to a different German sub just further complicated logistics. We should do what the South Koreans did with their Germans subs and continue building on the same design until we have something like the KSS-III

Has a lot to do with the underhand tactics employed by Naval Group (NG) during the construction of the Scorpenes. One of the reasons why IN took its own sweet time to approach MoD with a proposal for the extra 3 Scorpenes apart from their hopes for the Project -75I being granted a long pending sanction was also their extreme reluctance to get into another contract with NG .

Why do you think the RFI was framed in a way to do away with NGs participation in the Project -75I altogether ?

As far as RoKs collaboration with HDW /TKMS goes that's exactly what we planned way before RoK got into a similar arrangement beginning with a ToT with the former , in the 1980s during the Rajiv Gandhi administration .

However like our artillery program which didn't see any inductions since the Bofors howitzers till last decade beginning with the M-777 ULH due to the infamous Bofors scandal , our submarine program faced the same issue due to kickbacks paid during the HDW contract & the resultant scandal.

The Chola imprint on the Indian Navy. This week Indian Defence minister inaugurated the Naval War Collage building, Chola in Goa. The Chola Empire was one of the greatest Martime powers that India has. The building pays rich tributes to them. Pictures of the building:
