http://www.dnaindia.com/india/report_gujarat-builds-1st-survey-catamarans-for-indian-navy_1354613

Ahmedabad: Gujarat’s shipbuilding company, Alcock Ashdown, has broken into a new league. The Gujarat government-owned PSU has built the ‘hull form’ of two catamarans for the Indian Navy, the first catamarans for hydrographic survey to be inducted by the navy. The first ship christened, INS Makar, was launched in early February and the second, INS Meen, was launched early on Tuesday morning at the shipyard in Bhavnagar.

With this advanced hydrographic suite, the Indian Navy will become one of the few navies in the world to have this kind of survey capability, and Alcock Ashdown has emerged as a leader in integrating complex systems. The vessels will be stationed in Vishakhapatnam. They are part of a fleet of six vessels being built by the shipyard for the Indian Navy at a total cost of Rs 800 crore. Managing director of Gujarat Mineral Development Corporation and the shipyard, VS Gadhvi, told DNA that this is a significant achievement. He explained that this crucial assignment was not awarded to AAGL by the Indian Navy because it’s a government company, but through a competitive bidding process in which private players had also participated.

Executive director, naval projects, Subir Sengupta, says the primary role of the vessels will be to conduct coastal hydrographic survey of major and minor ports and harbours, their approaches and limited oceanographic survey.

This was an Airshow, and there is an inherent amount of danger present in such shows. This doesnt show the Poor Pilot Training or anything else, This shows that this is a very risky business, and our Pilots take into the skies to see us smile and be in awe! We should only Have the Best Planes do this manouvers, as these Planes are pushed to their limits, and sometimes beyond it. The Best Maintenance teams should be attending to these Planes, its no childs play!

May the Soul of the Pilot Rest In Peace, and may his Family be given the Courage to pass this. God Speed

RIP for those brave Pilots. How many more precious life have to be sacrificed before our MoD wake up!!!!!

As per news reports there may be a hydraulic failure or an engine failure as the pilot could not recover from the dive. But probe is on and all the Kirans are grounded at the moment.

As per Navy chief (as reported by news channels) the pilots did not eject and took the plane to a place where that could be least damage.

There was NO reason to have an Indian Navy stunt show at this expo! So many things went wrong.

This was a civil aviation expo which included participants from the airlines industry (carriers, charters, private jet dealers), and aeronautics companies (manufacturers). A stunt show by Sagar Pavan (Navy) was totally unneeded for so many reasons:

1. The show was held at the Begumpet Airport, Hyderabad's old civilian airport which is right in the middle of the city, and has dense residential and commercial property surrounding it (click to enlarge):

2. Usually when military participates (with Air Force and its Suryakiran trainer aircraft in fancy shows), in Hyderabad, it's done at the Dundigal Air Force Station, which is the seat of the Air Force Academy in Hyderabad, certainly not Begumpet!:

^That place is just a freaking 20 km outside the city limits. Couldn't these corporate assholes drive that far?

3. Hyderabad is a land-locked city. The sea is some 400 km away. What is the Indian Navy and its less than a decade old Sagar Pavan sqn doing here? It should hang out at INS Hansa, Goa, not freaking Hyderabad!

The only reason these guys were called for a civil aviation expo was to entertain the guests, putting a lot of things at risk. Did you know, one of the reasons our airport moved out of Begumpet is also that the runway is in straight line with the Nuclear Fuel Complex (NFC), which houses fuel for India's nuclear power plants. The NFC is a mere 3 km (vector) from this place!

P2P probably the IA will see this as great asset, but not indian navy. They have already tested it and found it unsuitable for its need.

Northrop-Grumman has made multiple presentations to the Indian Navy explaining why the IAI-HAL Naval Rotory UAV (NRUAV) based on the Chetak airframe is a bad idea. Remember, the NRUAV is a programme that has considerable Indian investment, not to mention a fully Indian-built helicopter airframe. I heard from a couple of my sources in the Navy that the Americans were making a powerful pitch against the NRUAV, so I sent NG an e-mail a few days ago.

Mike Fuqua, Northrop's Business Development Director (Tactical Unmanned Systems) replied, "Northrop Grumman is aware of the initiative announced by the Indian Government regarding NRUAV. However, we are convinced that once the issues of complexity, capability, maturity and reliability are evaluated, the Indian Navy will recognize that Fire Scout will provide the best, most cost effective, and most rapid VTUAV capability for their forces at sea."

The NRUAV is currently in its trial stage, and is still some way off from sea trials. However, the Indian Navy has fully backed the programme and has invested in it as well. At the same time, Fuqua said, "The Indian Navy has shown interest in the Fire Scout VTUAV and Northrop Grumman has been engaged with the Indian Navy to discuss capabilities. We have provided briefings and answered questions from the highest level of the Indian Navy, at their request."
