Yes the deal with turkey shows the country has no self respect. Giving money to erdogan who is staunchly anti Indian serves no use.beside some idiots believe trade with such states will help shape behaviour. Would have been better to acquire south Korean vessels. They have a much more efficient shipbuilding industry.
We cqn have even use this deal with korea for better bargain on biho( in the event of possible cancellation in favor to russian pansir)

FIGHTING CORONA ON LAND, INDIAN NAVY TRACKS PAKISTANI, CHINESE NAVY MOVEMENTS IN SEAS

New Delhi : Even as it is supporting the fight against Coronovirus on land, the Indian Navy is maintaining a Hawkeye in the Indian Ocean Region as it tracked Pakistani and Chinese Navy movements separately.

Indian Navy sources told ANI that the mission deployed warships of the Indian Navy are continuing extrusive surveillance from the Red Sea to Malacca Strait.

“During this surveillance, the Navy warships tracked newly-commissioned Pakistan Navy ship PNS Yarmook which was coming from Romania through the Red Sea to Karachi,” they said.

The Pakistan Navy warship was continuously tracked by the Indian Navy warships which are deployed in Operation Sankalp near the Persian Gulf and the Gulf of Aden for anti-piracy operations.

The Indian Navy warships deployed in the Indian Ocean Region also tracked a Chinese Navy Y901 class warship, which is a tanker.

The Indian Navy frequently uses its warships and maritime surveillance aircraft such as the P-8I anti-submarine warfare aircraft for keeping an eye on the Chinese Navy movements in the waters close to India.

The Chinese Navy tanker was tracked by our ships as soon as it entered the area through the Malacca Straits, the Navy sources said.

The Indian Navy has been tracking the movements of Chinese Navy vessels including its nuclear and conventional submarines, warships and tankers which frequent the Indian Ocean regularly in the name of anti-piracy patrols.

For battling Coronovirus on land, the Indian Navy has set up quarantine centres as different places and a number of evacuees from Iran had come to its quarantine facility in Mumbai. (ANI)

India is not able to study and developp such an "easy" ship ? incredible.
Even if you need a 55000T ship to do the job of a mature 45000T design, it is incredible you can use a foreign design, specially from a muslim and now hard country.

I was reading about the tide class. It cost royal Navy about 700 to 800 million USD for 4 ships, okay they are a bit small and it's just a hull build cost but friggity frag india is gonna pay 2.3 billion USD for 5 such vessels. Sounds like a day light robbery to me.

Well Turkey has never built a 45,000 ton tanker. So most likely the added costs of designing a new ship from the ground up are factored into the deal. Also some money for Turkey to STFU about Kashmir.

The deal includes modernization of shipyard too. Plus all the vessel will be build in HSL itself. So that means majority of money will be spend in India. Turkey will probably make few millions in consulting etc.

Secondly the reason of giving contract to turkey maybe two -
1 . Turkish lira has depreciated highly that means turkey quote will be substantially lower then others . Probably so much lower that goi is willing to ignore erdogons nonsense for it.
2. We have trade surplus with turkey so kind of a reward to turkey to allow greater market access.

I'm only guessing the rationale here. I still believe turkey should have kicked out and l&t could have done it given the chance .

Indian Navy monitoring Chinese vessels as dozen underwater drones deployed: Report
MoneyControl • Mar 24, 2020 10:06 PM IST
By Moneycontrol News

Though media reports suggest that oceanographic data was transmitted by the drones, such data is often used for submarine warfare operations by the naval intelligence.

Amid reports of China deploying a fleet of underwater drones in the Indian Ocean Region to monitor movements in the area, India has started keeping a strict vigil in the area, reported the Times of India.

China already has a deployment of ships in the region for hydrographic survey and oceanic research, and Indian security agencies are skeptical about the motive behind the deployment of the drones. While these are usually used to conduct surveys for commercial activities such as deep-sea mining, they can also be exploited to aid in their submarine and anti-submarine operations.

According to a recent Forbes report, China has deployed at least 12 drones called Sea Wing from their research vessel Xiangyanghong 06. The long-range gliders were launched in the IOR in December last year and taken out in February after they made more than 3,400 observations.
The data was reportedly collected for the ocean ecology research project of China’s Ministry of Natural Resources. Though media reports suggest that oceanographic data was transmitted by the drones, such data is often used for submarine warfare operations by naval intelligence.

While the Indian Navy is yet uncertain about the “authenticity” of the Forbes article, they are constantly tracking Chinese research vessels. A handful of such research vessels are usually always present in different parts of the IOR. To find out the best route for submarines, these vessels gauge the salinity, temperature, and chlorophyll level of seawater by conducting marine surveys.

Indo-Israeli LR-SAM will challenge Chinese Navy in the Indian Ocean: Chinese Military specialist
According to Chinese Military specialist while speaking on Indian Naval Capabilities in a Military show hosted by state broadcaster CCTV channel, identified long-range surface to air missile (LRSAM) jointly developed by Israel and India has one of the key weapon system which can neutralise firepower of the People’s Liberation Army Navy while operating in the Indian ocean to a great extent.

Advanced air and missile defence system joint development by IAI and DRDO were designed specially to take down Chinese developed Sub-sonic cruise missiles in anti-ship role. Israel Navy Ship (INS) Hanit in 2006 was attacked while patrolling off the Lebanese coast with Chinese C-802 cruise missile which was supplied to Iranian forces but was smuggled to target Isreali Navy.

Israel and India joined hands to deal with emergence of Chinese Sub-sonic cruise missiles which have also been supplied to India’s arch-rival Pakistan in the region .

LRSAM is an advanced, long-range missile defense and air defense system which as many features such as

1) Long Range for interception
2) Two way data link (GPS S band)
3) Active Radar Seeker Missile
4) 360 degree coverage
5) Vertical Launch
6) Multiple Simultaneous Engagements

According to Defence Experts, the missile system delivers an accurate, high quality, real-time arena situation picture and extracts low Radar Cross Section (RCS) targets even in thetoughest environmental conditions. It is a digital Active Electronic Steering Array (AESA) Radar System which incorporates new and advanced technologies.

The LRSAM missile system can operate by night as well as by day in addition to all weather conditions. It is capable of successfully dealing with simultaneous threats engagements, even in severe saturation scenarios.

The system has a very short reaction time and a fast missile vertical launch capability with 360 degree coverage. The system optimizes the coordination betweenthe missile and batteries by using an advanced broadband communication network.

According to Indian Navy LRSAM is capable of dealing with short, medium, and long range threats, where its inter connectivity among the various ships in the naval task force enables it to be a multi-layered air and missile defence System.

On the issue of submarines, MoD has replied with Phase 1 of conventional submarines for Navy - P75 to be completed by 2022. P75I induction to happen between 2027-32. Phase 2 - 12 conventional indigenous boats to be constructed.
When will the phase 2 start after 2032! This is all going too late. We should start phase two simultaneously with p75i. Take the 75i design and put Indian equipment/aip into it . And start building both of them simultaneously 6-6 . Then for the rest 6 indegenous boats go for Desi design and keep on building .

It has more to do with production cap than abilities.

After MiG-29 jets, India mulling offer of refurbished submarines from Russia?

The Kilo class are numerically the most important class of submarines in Indian Navy

Web Desk April 03, 2020 10:22 IST

The Indian Navy is examining a proposal by a Russian shipbuilding company to supply three refurbished 'Kilo' class diesel-electric submarines, a defence website reported on Thursday.

Jane's Defence Weekly reported Russia's state-owned United Shipbuilding Corporation made the offer in December last year. The company has also proposed to conduct refit work on three of the Indian Navy's existing class of Kilo class submarines to extend their operational lives by 10 years, Jane's Defence Weekly reported.

"The entire package—dubbed 'three plus three'—has reportedly been priced at $1.8-2 billion," Jane's Defence Weekly reported. An agreement was expected to be formalised at a meeting of Russian and Indian officials in Goa in March, which was cancelled on account of the coronavirus outbreak. The submarines on offer from Russia are reportedly ships that are about 30-years-old.

The Kilo class submarines, which run on batteries under water, are numerically the most important class of underwater vessels in the Indian Navy. India purchased a total of 10 Kilo class submarines, which are called the Sindhughosh class, with the majority delivered before the fall of the Soviet Union in 1991. The first ship, INS Sindhughosh, was commissioned in 1986. The 'youngest' Kilo class submarine in the Indian Navy was inducted in 2000.

Over the past two decades, India and Russia have worked to upgrade the Kilo class fleet with new sonar systems, electronics and weapons, including the Klub cruise missile, which can hit ships and targets on land. The ongoing upgrade will extend the operational life of these vessels to 35 years. Most of these submarines were upgraded at the Zvezdochka shipyard at Severodvinsk in Russia.

The Indian Navy's fleet of Kilo class submarines is estimated to number eight vessels currently. One Kilo class submarine of the Indian Navy, the INS Sindhurakshak, suffered extensive damage in a dockside explosion in Mumbai in 2013 that killed 17 sailors and was retired. Another ship, the INS Sindhuvir, is being transferred to Myanmar.

The offer from Russia for refurbished submarines comes as the Indian Navy grapples with a shortage in diesel-electric submarines, caused by the delays in the induction of the French-designed Scorpene class ships. The Indian Navy has also made slow progress on finalising a supplier for six new submarines under the Project 75I programme, which estimated to have a contract value of about $7 billion dollars. The Indian Navy can induct the old Russian Kilo class submarines faster as it is familiar with the design and its equipment.

The Kilo class submarine has been exported to numerous countries including China, Iran and Vietnam. Russia is continuing to build an upgraded version of the Kilo class for its navy.

Fighter deal

Interestingly, the offer for the used submarines comes months after Russia confirmed that the Indian Air Force was planning to "urgently buy" 21 ‘mothballed’ MiG-29 fighters. Last year, the CEO of Russia's MiG Aircraft Corporation claimed that a deal was being negotiated.

The government had granted preliminary approval for the deal, estimated to be valued at $847 million, in February last year. The 21 MiG-29 jets are believed to be jets that were built in the Soviet era, but had not seen service.

Like the Kilo class submarine, the MiG-29 is a numerically important weapon for the Indian Air Force, with over 60 jets in service. The Indian Air Force has been upgrading the MiG-29 with new radars, electronics, weapons and increased fuel capacity.
