Indian Navy now moves focus from Arabian Sea to A&N Islands to prepare for a two-front War

t is usually in Army and Air Force circles where the scenario of a two-front war is often discussed. But now, the Indian Navy is training for such a scenario. After conducting its three-week-long operational exercise in the Arabian Sea, the Navy is now moving to the waters off Andaman and Nicobar Islands for war games.

The Western Naval Command, based in Mumbai, on Thursday concluded its operational exercise in the Arabian Sea named ‘Paschim Leher’. The exercise tested the operational readiness of the Western Naval Command and the execution of it's operational plans.

According to the Navy, over 40 naval assets, including the aircraft carrier INS Vikramaditya, frontline ships of the Western Fleet and Eastern Fleet (including the newly inducted Kolkata-class destroyers), submarines, potent missile vessels of the 22nd Killer Squadron, patrol vessels and craft of the local flotilla and Indian Coast Guard, participated in the exercise.

"In addition, the exercise also witnessed intense flying activity by the carrier-borne MiG-29Ks, P-8Is, IL-38SDs and Dorniers as well as remotely piloted aircraft," said an officer, while adding that the exercise also saw enhanced participation by the aircraft of the Indian Air Force, with coordinated flying missions with the Indian Navy's air assets.

IAF assets such as maritime role Jaguar fighters, Su-30 MKIs, AWACS and aerial refuellers participated in large numbers from different airfields in Gujarat, Maharashtra and North India.

An amphibious landing was also conducted, which included the participation of the 91 Infantry Brigade of the Indian Army.

The Navy claimed Paschim Lehar-2018 enabled testing and revalidation of operational plans and manoeuvres in a hostile maritime scenario on India's western seaboard. Defence of Indian offshore assets, such as oil rigs, escort operations of Indian merchant ships and coastal defence were also rehearsed.

"The exercise will enable further refinement of the operational, logistics and administrative plans of the Western Naval Command," an officer added.

With the completion of naval war games on the western seaboard, the Indian Navy is now moving to the eastern side.

Exercise Milan is scheduled to be held from March 6-11. This year, 23 countries have been invited, of which 16 have confirmed so far. Exercise Milan is a congregation of littoral navies, conducted biennially by Indian Navy under the aegis of the Andaman and Nicobar Command. It began in 1995 with the participation of four countries

Indian Navy researches ways to build stealth submarines – Indian Defence Research Wing
3-4 minutes
SOURCE: TNN

A group of 30 officers from Indian Navy will engage in an elaborate research at the Defence Institute of Advanced Technology (DIAT) here with a view to reduce vulnerability of military submarines and ships to detection by the enemy from noise and vibrations generated by propulsions that run them.

Commodore A K Sinha (retd), DIAT registrar, who also specialises in submarines, told TOI on Tuesday, “The naval headquarters recently communicated to us the need for a collaborative research project on this aspect. As of now, 30 naval officers are pursuing advanced postgraduate studies at DIAT and these officers, along with the institute’s professors, will work on the project.”

Sinha said, “The project, to be directly monitored by naval headquarters, is at a primary stage and we are working on various aspects related to it. Our laboratories will play a key role as they have modern equipment essential for carrying out such research. The practical aspect of the project will be carried out by the navy on its ships and submarines.”

Element of stealth is critical to military submarines which are designed to move around undetected under the sea and surface only in situations where they need to establish radio contact or perform data communication with their respective headquarters.

A senior navy officer, who did not wish to be named, told TOI over phone, “Every ship and submarine is equipped with different types of propulsion system and each of these systems generate a particular type of noise or vibration underwater. Using sound navigation and ranging, better known as sonars, the enemy can identify the type of ship or submarine, distance and its speed. Reducing or tweaking propulsion sound of ship and submarine will give a big operational advantage.”

He said, “Modern generation stealth submarines are difficult to track. The submarines of Class A212 of German Federal Navy or Saab A26 of Swedish Navy have been designed in such a way that they hardly make any noise, emit almost no heat and minutely reflect radar or sonar signals. To develop such systems, researchers need to carry out studies so that we can develop such systems indigenously.”

Another senior navy officer said, “Propulsions generate maximum noise and vibrations under water. If you equip ship or submarine with silent propulsion, you will have to compromise on speed and longevity of the vehicle. Therefore, having a new propulsion system which will generate less noise and vibration and at the same time have no effect on other functioning of ships and submarines is critical.”

Has anyone noticed that when navy is discussed, it is researching or building but when Airforce or Army are involved it is always for searching or buying?
That's how the navy has evolved. With tight budgets and a pressing need to maintain a qualitative and quantitative advantage over our adversaries, the IN had no choice but to build local.

What complicates things is that most governments had no strategic vision and could barely differentiate between the IN and the Merchant Navy. Thankfully that obtuseness has somehow lessened under the present dispensation.

25 industries from Kerala assisting DRDO in developing indigenous Sonar

KOCHI: Of the 100 industries, both large and small, that are playing a role in making navigation and communication systems as part of anti-submarine warfare for the Indian naval warships, 25 are from Kerala. And they are working with the scientists of defence research and development organization, (DRDO) to develop what is exclusively and uniquely Indian Sonar (sound navigation and ranging) system.
These industries get orders from the Kochi-based Naval physical and oceanographic laboratory (NPOL) under the DRDO which designs and develops the sonar systems exclusively for the navy’s warships and submarines.

“The Indian Navy is our first user and a satisfied one too. Of the three services - Indian Navy is satisfied with the work being done here in NPOL and in the other two labs - Naval science and technological laboratory, Vishakhapatnam and Naval materials research laboratory, Maharashtra,” said S Christopher, secretary, defence (R&D). In the last five years, the sonar systems developed by NPOL have had takers from navies abroad. “Countries like Myanmar have already installed systems in their warships while discussions are on at various levels with other Indian ocean countries. Our advantage is that unlike other two services, Indian Navy is using only our sonars for its ships and submarines. This helps us immensely because when we scour abroad for vendors for our products, the first question is ‘are your services using this? Of course, we make the variants of what we give to our Navy,” said Christopher, who is also chairman, DRDO. Countries looking to import Indian sonars include Vietnam, Philippines, Indonesia, Thailand and Myanmar.

India has been witnessing debates on the economics of defense R&D but NPOL has been doubling the overall commercial worth of their products. In 2007, the cumulative product value was just above Rs500 cr. In the next five years, it touched Rs 1,280 cr and today it stands at over Rs 3,800 cr, out of which around Rs 1,400 cr worth of products have been delivered. Around Rs 2,400 cr worth of products are under various stages of production and delivery. The export product portfolio includes different kinds of sonars suitable for all kinds of ships and submarines, acoustic domes, directing gears etc.

“We have both public-sector units and small industries developing components for us. Even though it requires long periods of investment, all those who have joined us remain with us in our product development. They are making electronic items, sensors and several other components used in the final product that is fitted in the Indian naval ships and submarines,” said S Kedarnath Shenoy, director, NPOL. "No one knows our Indian oceans waters as we do and hence the sonars developed by NPOL are qualitatively much higher and better than many others in the world," Shenoy said.

Christopher said that understanding oceans had become more important in the wake of increase in trade and commercial activity, growing accidents and disasters involving vessels. "There is a growing demand for latest technologies and academicians, scientists and industries have started focusing on this sector," he said.

Sonars which play a crucial role in navigation and communication for warships and submarines is an important technology as far as defence is concerned. “With Chinese presence in the Indian waters, it has become important for the Navy to be more vigilant,” officials said.

A VERSATLE TECHNOLOGYSONAR It is a device that is used to detect underwater objects using sound waves. The acoustic frequencies used in sonar systems vary from very low (infrasonic) to extremely high (ultrasonic)

A sound pulse is generated and sent underwater through a transmitter. The sound waves are reflected by the underwater object which are received at receiver

The time taken by sound wave to come back is recorded. And by knowing the speed of sound wave in water, the distance is calculated

The challenge lies in ensuring that while your sonar detects a submarine lying hidden in the deep waters, it should also not radiate any waves that will expose you to the enemy

TO FIND
Actual depth of the sea

Lost ships and submarines

As an ocean surveillance system

Locate enemy submarines

For under water security

SPIN-OFFS Even as they develop defence systems for the services, DRDO’s technologies have yielded interesting spin-offs including the artificial leg which came from the technology used in Agni. Similarly, R&D by NPOL scientists resulted in two major technology spin-offs that could be used for civil society needs

SANJIVANI A gadget that can detect people trapped in debris in quake-hit areas. It was used during the Latur and Bhuj earthquakes to find survivors

The equipment works on simple sonar technology. It sends signals that can direct you to a trapped life. An easy-to-handle gadget that looks like a mine- detector, it can capture minute decibels like scratching on the wall or feeble breathing. The main unit can be strapped onto the waist. A long handle with a sensor called probe, leads the search. It transmits low-decibel sounds to a headphone. The inability to track people trapped under debris has been one of the major reasons for loss of life in quake-hit areas

TARAGINI Yet another hand-held device, it can understand depth and aid rescue during accidents in water-bodies. Can been recharged with a mobilecharger and can be used by divers when searching when there is no diving gear. It provides information about depth in terms of feet, limited to an operational range of 100 feet. The information about bottom hardness is presented in qualitative terms

Sonar imaging

Tracking and detection of completely and partially-buried objects in coastal ocean is a major challenge. A paper presented at the recently concluded international conference on sonars and sensors (ICONS-2018) spoke of how objects can be tracked using sonar images. Autonomous surface tracking vehicle, autonomous underwater vehicle, advanced sonars for underwater unexploded ordnance can be used for this purpose. High-resolution sonar system provides acoustic images of high quality sonar images for underwater tracking and detection. Infrared sensors are also used to capture data
Developed by NPOL scientists, MR (Magnetorheological fluid) has got international patent in the USA, UK, Japan, France and India. It is a smart fluid which changes its viscosity. While this is already being used in Indian naval ships, it can also be used in automobiles. There are about two lakh kilometres of roads in India. Many of the roads are in bad conditions. Automotive shock-absorbers are mostly ineffective in accommodating these road conditions, since their performance are optimized in the factory based on ideal road conditions. This smart fluid can do wonders on the road, scientists said. Depending on the road conditions the damping values can be changed on the road as situation demands. Several automobile shock-absorber manufacturing companies have shown interest in this fluid and NPOL is negotiating with them for technology transfer and licensing

Indo-French naval exercises ‘Varuna 2018’ kick-off at MPT

TNN | Mar 20, 2018, 03:27 IST

Vasco: The Indian Navy will get an opportunity to put its recently inducted Scorpene-class submarine, the INS Kalvari, through its paces and simultaneously gain from the French navy’s operational know-how during the Indo-French naval exercises, Varuna 2018. The bilateral maritime exercises began on March 19 at the Mormugao Port Trust (MPT), Vasco, with the harbor phase, and will continue over the next two months.
THe INS Kalvari, a conventional diesel-electric submarine, was commissioned by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in mid-December 2017 and has been designed by French firm DCNS.

Naval sources said the Indian Navy is keen to enhance INS Kalvari’s operations for anti-surface warfare (attacking surface ships) and anti-submarine warfare (destroying submarines) in the Arabian Sea and the Bay of Bengal, especially since Chinese submarines have been foraying into the Indian Ocean Region (IOR).

Over the past two years, People Liberation Army Navy submarines are frequently present in the IOR, making periodic forays into the Arabian Sea.

“Maritime security is a priority of our defence and security policy, alongside the fight against terrorism,” joint commander of the French naval forces deployed in the Indian ocean rear admiral Didier Piaton said. “As a strong symbol of the strategic partnership, the Varuna exercises aim at strengthening the common knowledge and the interoperability of both, French and Indian navies.”

France has brought its nuclear attack submarine FS Perle and the anti-submarine warfare frigate Jean de Vienne for the exercises.

“The Jean De Vienne is ready for operational know-how exchanges with the three Indian vessels participating in the exercise — INS Mumbai, INS Trikand and INS Kalvari,” Piaton said. “For the next four days, our sailors will evolve through different scenarios conducted during a combined anti-submarine exercise, air defence exercise, firing, asymmetric warfare and other exercises.”

“Maritime cooperation between France and India will be crucial to maintain the safety of international sea lanes for unimpeded commerce and communication in accordance with international law, for building maritime domain awareness and for greater coordination in regional and international fora in the region,” said flag officer commander Western fleet rear admiral MA Hampiholi.

The navies of India and France will hold the bilateral maritime exercises in the Arabian Sea, the Bay of Bengal and South Western Indian Ocean till May.

The Indian Navy’s P8-I anti-submarine aircraft, Dornier maritime patrol aircraft and Mig 29K fighter aircraft will also participate in Varuna 2018.
