Pipavav Coast Guard station commissioned

AHMEDABAD: Coastal security in the Gulf of Khambat received a major fillip with the commissioning of Indian Coast Guard's Pipavav station in Amreli district on Friday. The Pipavav station will help check infiltration, smuggling and illegal fishing in the Gulf as well as along south Gujarat's coastline.

The Indian Coast Guard has now stations at Jakhau, Vadinar, Okha, Porbandar, Veraval, Mundra and Pipavav.

A fourth Dornier aircraft was today inducted in the Coast Guard to increase maritime surveillance over coastal West Bengal and Odisha.

This took the total strength of the Coast Guards' Dornier fleet to 38 across the country, a defence release said.

It coincided with the completion of three decades of air operations at the air enclave in Kolkata operated by 700 Coast Guard Squadron, which was also the first to induct Hindustan Aeronautics Limited built Dornier aircraft equipped with state-of-art sensors.

It will come in handy for Coast Guard operations

Dornier aircraft attached to the Coast Guard (Region-East) will soon acquire technology to facilitate transmission of live visuals from the sea to the headquarters in Chennai. This facility will go a long way in launching relief/rescue operations involving fishermen or ships in distress along the eastern seaboard and having a real tactical overview of the maritime territory.

According to Inspector-General and Commander of Coast Guard (Region-East) S.P. Sharma, two advanced Dornier aircraft equipped with satellite phones, weather/navigational radars, optical cameras and Forward Looking Infra-red devices were inducted into the fleet recently.

"With this, the number of aircraft has gone up to five. Two Chetak helicopters are expected to join the fleet soon. New ships are also being commissioned to pave the way for a more intensified and strategic surveillance operations," Com. Sharma told TheHindu on Tuesday.

Asked about the frequent attack on Tamil Nadu fishermen and incidents of fishing boats getting stranded or capsized, he said the Coast Guard had a well-organised mechanism of reaching out to the fishermen in distress. Patrolling on sea/air was organised in close coordination with the Indian Navy.

Referring to the incident where the Coast Guard rescued six fishermen stranded in an island for three days without food or water, Com. Sharma said the hovercraft sighted the victims waving for help and rushed to their rescue.

"We are enquiring why the family, fishermen association or the Fisheries Department did not report the matter. These fishermen who sailed out of Pamban coast in a country boat should have returned home by evening"¦though they were stranded for about four days, there was no complaint from any quarters," he said.

Of the seven-member crew, one was feared missing. After the boat sunk, the fishermen swam to the fifth island close to the International Maritime Boundary Line. From there, they swam to one island after the other towards the homeland by taking cue from the direction of the sun.

1,231 lives saved by Coast Guard between Aug 2012-July 2013

Mumbai: The rescue operations by Indian Coast Guard (ICG) and other agencies saved 1,231 lives in the last one year period.

The statistic was put forth at the 12th National Maritime Search and Rescue Board meeting, chaired by Director General, ICG, here today.

"Between August 2012 and July 2013, 542 people were rescued by Coast Guard independently, and remaining 689 were rescued in co-ordination with merchant mariners and other agencies," said an ICG official.

The Board meets annually to discuss policy issues, to formulate guidelines, procedures, and to consider recommendations for updating of 'National Search and Rescue Plan'.

Director General Vice Admiral Anurag G Thapliyal stressed in the meeting the need for strengthening the co-operation mechanism between various resources agencies for efficiently search and rescue operations, the official said.

ICGS Rajveer to be commissioned today

Seventh in the series of eight inshore patrol vessels (IPV), ICGS Rajveer is being commissioned here on Saturday. Defence Secretary R.K. Mathru will commission the patrol vessel in the presence of Director General Indian Coast Guard Vice Admiral Anurag G Thapliyal, Commander Coast Guard Region (East) Inspector General S.P. Sharma and officials of the Central and the State Governments.

The patrol vessel manned by five officers and 30 men under the command of Commandant Rajiv Ranjan will be based at Visakhapatnam and under the administrative and operational control of the Commander, District Headquarters No. 06 (COMDIS 6), Visakhapatnam. ICGS Rajveer is a 50-metre IPV, designed and built by Garden Reach Shipbuilders and Engineers, Kolkota. It is equipped with the most advanced and sophisticated navigational and communication sensors , according to a press release on Friday.

VISAKHAPATNAM: The central government has approved the setting up of 38 radar stations across the country in the second phase under Coastal Surveillance Network, said defence secretary R K Mathur, adding that the first phase of the network comprising 46 radar stations was expected to be completed by October.

Coast Guard hi-tech ship bolsters Kutch security

MUNDRA: As a part of ongoing efforts by Indian Coast Guard to strengthen coastal security, a 30metre long interceptor boat with 90 tonne displacement and maximum speed of 45 knots was commissioned at Mundra in Kutch district on Sunday evening to strengthen the security umbrella over the Gulf of Kutch.

The Indian Coast Guard Ship C-403, the third of the series of 36 interceptor boats designed and built by M/s Larsen & Toubro, Surat is fitted with the state-of-the-art navigation and communication equipment and medium range armament. It is designed for high speed interception, close-coast patrol, low-intensity maritime operations, search and rescue and maritime surveillance and is expected to boost the coastal security force's capability to prevent terror attacks like the one on Mumbai in 2008. The C-403, which will be based at Mundra, will help augment patrolling in the Gulf of Kutch and prevent infiltration, smuggling and illegal fishing in the Indian territorial waters.

The ship was commissioned Gujarat minister Anandiben Patel in the presence of Inspector General Kuldip Singh Sheoran, commander, Coast Guard Region (North-West).

Cochin Shipyard to deliver first patrol vessel to Coast Guard in September

KOCHI: Cochin Shipyard Ltd (CSL) will deliver the first of the 20 fast patrol vessels being built for the Coast Guard next month.

Shipyard sources said sea trials of the first vessel had been satisfactory. The vessel, which can sail to high seas, had achieved a speed of 36 knots (about 50 km/hour) during the trial as against 35 knots specified in the contract.

The 50-metre-long vessels will be used for patrolling coastal areas, preventing insurgency and protection of fisheries within the exclusive economic zone. The Rs 1,500-crore contract was signed between the Coast Guard and CSL in March 2010 and the remaining vessels will be delivered before 2017, one each in three months after the delivery of the first one.

Hunt Begins For Aircraft Platform For Indian Coastguard's New Eyes


Let's face it. The trusty Do-228 can only do so much, and the Indian Coastguard knows it. Given how much it's got on its plate, this is probably a good time to decide that it needs more. Thankfully, it already has. India is looking to choose a new aircraft platform for the Coastguard's requirement of 19 multi-mission maritime aircraft, a broad requirement that has been known for a while, but now down to numbers and specifics. The Centre for Airborne Systems (CABS), has sent out a global request for information to international airframers to pitch suitably modified aircraft for the officially titled Multi-mission Maritime Aircraft (MMMA). According to the CABS request for information, "The initial requirement is for 6 certified and modified aircraft. Another 3 aircrafts are envisaged in Phase II and shall be under option clause. The future requirement is for another 10 such aircrafts." The CABS laboratory appears to be an integrator, more than a lead developer on the platform. It has floated tenders for the platform's intended maritime patrol radar and electro-optic system/infrared (EO/IR) suite, in addition to a pollution surveillance suite. The officially listed roles for the proposed aircraft platform include maritime surveillance and interdiction, search and rescue, cargo and personnel transportation, air ambulance and pollution surveillance. CABS is currently steeped in the flight and systems testing on the Embraer-CABS AEW&C platform in Bangalore. The RFI for the MMMA does not specify the kind of aircraft CABS is looking for. Does Embraer have a presumable advantage?

Coast Guard to launch interceptor boat in Hazira

SURAT: The Indian Coast Guard will launch its state-of-the-art interceptor boat in Hazira on Saturday.

The interceptor boat 'C-406' is the sixth in the series out of 54 Interceptor Boats (IBs) being built by Larsen and Toubro Ltd in Hazira. It is a water-jet propelled vessel measuring 28 metre in length with 101 tonnes displacement and is made of marine grade aluminium.

The vessel has an endurance of 500 nautical miles at economical speed of 25 knots and is capable of achieving speeds in excess of 45 knots to perform its interdiction operations against anti-national elements at sea.

The vessel is fitted with the latest navigation and communication equipment and medium range, high rate of fire weapon.

Official sources said the induction of ship will further augment the coastal security efforts.

Indian Coast Guard commissions craft for patrolling along eastern coast

KOLKATA: The Indian Coast Guard, on Thursday, commissioned an interceptor boat (IB) for close-coast patrolling along Odisha and West Bengal. The IB was commissioned at Paradip. Among those present were Odisha chief secretary Jugal Kishore Mahapatra, Inspector General K C Pande, commander, Coast Guard Region (North East) and other civil and military dignitaries. It was Mahapatra who commissioned the craft.


The ship is commanded by deputy commandant Tarun Dutt Pandey and has a crew of one officer and 11 enrolled personnel. IB C-426 will be based at Paradip under the administrative and operational control of the commander of the North East region based in Kolkata.

The 28-meter long vessel displaces 90 tonnes and can achieve a maximum speed of 45 knots, with an endurance of 500 nautical miles at an economical speed of 25 knots. Equipped with state-of-the-art navigation and communication equipment and medium range armament, it makes an ideal platform for undertaking high-speed interception, close-coast patrol, low intensity maritime operations, search and rescue, medical evacuation and maritime surveillance.

"With intelligence reports suggesting the possibility of a 9/11 like strike along India's eastern coast, security in the northern Bay of Bengal region has been intensified. This is a very busy shipping route and there is a lot of traffic between India and Bangladesh. Several agencies like the Navy and IB are keeping watch on movement in this region. The new IB will help in better surveillance," an officer said.

Kochi: The Indian Coast Guard has received the first of the series of 20 Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) built by the public sector Cochin Shipyard Limited for the maritime agency to strengthen coastal security.

The vessel 'Aadesh' was delivered to the Coast Guard after successful completion of all its trials on September 25, a CSL release said here.



It will be operated by the Coast Guard station at Tuticorin in Tamil Nadu.

The vessel is the first in a series of 20 FPVs contracted by CSL for the ICG in 2010 with the delivery of the last craft slated for 2017.

The primary role of the vessel include fisheries protection and monitoring, patrol within the country's exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and coastal patrol, anti- smuggling, search and rescue operations and for anti-piracy operations.

The vessels have a secondary role of providing communication link and escorting convoys during hostilities and war time, the release said.

The Cochin Shipyard has launched the fourth Fast Patrol Vessel (FPV) for the Indian Coast Guard (ICG). The vessel 'Abhiraj' was launched by Dr Ranjini Raghavan in the presence of DIG Satish Chandran, Commandant, Coast Guard District Headquarters 4, and DIG TP Sadanandan, CGRPS (K) of Indian Coast Guard. Capt R S Sundar, Director (Operations) CSL, Dr K N Raghavan, Commissioner of Customs, senior officials of the Coast Guard, Indian Navy, and Cochin Shipyard were present.

It is the fourth in a series of 20 FPVs being built by the Cochin Shipyard for the Coast Guard. The vessels are being built under the dual classification requirements of ABS and IRS.The primary roles of the vessel include fisheries protection and monitoring, patrol within exclusive economic zone (EEZ) and coastal patrol, anti-smuggling, search, rescue operations and anti-piracy operations.
