We studied GM failure in India as he case study in strategic management. Why the GM failed in India though they have many more time patents than Maruti and global presence in sale? The main reason was that its products were not India specific. They bought the cars sold in International market and try to sell in India. On other hand Mruti had an overwhelming presence in India and India was their main market,. Indian Suzuki is bigger than parent company in Japan and hence their entire focus was Indian Market. They made all of their products for India.I think its the GM Beat. Which used to be Daewoo Matiz? Not a bad car but GM had no clue how to operate in Indian market. Anyway GM India was a front for chinese automakes are thankfully exited the Indian market. The Beat is still produced for export markets.
Secondly, GM changed their CEOs very frequently did not allow any one individual to properly understand and respond to the requirements of Indian public.
Quality is conformance to requirements. What is quality for one individual may not be the quality for others so not necessarily a product is a hit in international market may be a hit in Indian Market.
